Passive Hull Abilities

Recommended Posts

Hello tankers! You may have heard of the hull overdrives... plan, intended to make hulls distinct from each other. While it's a good plan, unfortunately overdue, I say it's not enough. Right now, hulls are differentiated only by speed and health, and some other tiny differences. Which is why I'll propose a little idea - passive, always-on, no-cost abilities specific to each hull, and which do not need an activation.

I see the hull overdrives as something that gives each hull a specific role beyond the light/medium/heavy classes, and creates new classes and roles for the hulls to be specified under. These passive abilities should be relevant to the role their overdrive gives them, and more importantly, should not be mere situational statistical improvements. Below in the bullet points I'll explain.

NOTE: These are mere examples for the readers and developers that I came up with, not the abilities I actually think should be implemented! I understand that some of these may be and will be ridiculous and likely even game-breaking or outright undoable, which is why I'm saying that these are mere examples, to say that these should not be mere stat changes.

  • Wasp, being the harasser (aka that tank which is supposed to drive the enemies mad with its speed), should be able to teleport. Basically, there's teleport zones in maps, visible to all but accessible only to Wasp, which teleport it to another place, predefined rather than decided by player or RNG.
  • Hornet, being the recon or scout, should be able to relay the location of any player it is in combat with, to the entire team. It can also reveal camo'ed Hunters.
  • Hunter, being the hunter, assassin, disabler (aka that tank which seeks out and eliminates the enemy's most dangerous tanks, like those on supplies), should be able to blend in its environment, be naturally nigh invisible unless in combat, and be able to deal extra damage to the most dangerous enemies. Its overdrive should be able to temporarily disable passive abilities.
  • Viking, being the raider, should be able to - wait I haven't thought this out, curse me.
  • Dictator, being the team supplier (i.e the one that provides the team supplies), should be able to extend the effect of any supplies it takes - or maybe activates - to either nearby teammates or a reduced effect to the entire team. Effects do not stack.
  • Titan, being the shield, should be able to give the team a shield which blocks some amount of damage and recharges over time if not in combat. The shield effect is temporarily neutralized if a Titan takes damage. Effects do not stack.
  • Mammoth, being the tank (i.e that tank which can take lots of damage and dish out lots as well, and takes hits intended for others), should be able to randomly deflect some damage from any turret it does not have a module equipped against. That, to not make modules even more OP.

Note again that these are mere examples, a statement that these passive abilities should not be mere stat changes.

Valid

Interestingly enough, on the RU ideas site (which, I just realised, has been shut down completely) there was a topic a few years ago where mods specifically requested ideas for passive hull abilities, which don't require a key to activate. Although it seems that nothing has happened with that since then.

Height, weight and turret position are NOT tiny differences. They make all hulls completely different and affect their gameplay a lot. Hulls in Tanki do NOT need any special abilities, they are good as they are now (but devs should add more hulls).

If you think that hulls in each category are similar, just use Dictator Freeze against Viking Freeze and you will lose almost every time. Just do not ask why...

How about being able to pass supplies of gold boxes to one of your team mates by pressing a key to "give" the item to your team mate which is next to you? That would be a passive gift.

Giving 1000 crystals to your friend who has bad garage? Great idea!
