Improving the matchmaking system

Recommended Posts

REASONING:

There is a huge flaw in how Tanki's matchmaking system (MMS) does "balance" i think. It only tries to do balance between the teams. It doesn't try to do balance WITHIN the team. It assumes that since 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9, the teams are equal and thus balanced.

But just because both sides equal 40 doesn't mean the game is balanced. There is another aspect of balance that they miss, and that is that teammates should also be equal to one another.

In the context of game balance, 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 is NOT equal to 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5, even though both sum up to 40. This is because in the first scenario, the 1s in the team will just be spending all their time being crushed by the 9s on the opposite team, thus resulting is less fun for both sides and will also be doing really bad compared to their 9 teammates (and im sure the 9s will also be bored and annoyed at having to carry half of their team). It is true that the teams are "balanced" in that both sides suffer equally, but that's not good enough. In contrast, the second scenario results in more fun for both sides because there wont be 1s being constantly crushed by 9s or 9s having to constantly carry their 1 teammates. Everyone is facing equals and competing against equal teammates.

A good matchmaking system doesn't just try to get equal teams. It tries to let all players have fun in addition to balanced teams, and accomplishes this by ensuring both equal teams and equal teammates. Tanki's MMS is not doing both and that needs to change.

HOW TO FIX:

The fix is relatively simple and it doesn't seem too hard to implement. Players should NEVER get placed into a game if ANY player, whether it be teammate or enemy, is more than 2-3 ranks above or below them.

That should give us balanced teams AND balanced teammates.

What do you think?

Feel free to tell me if there's anything wrong with my explanation.

Declined

Idea is good, but it can't be implemented as long as Tanki has the amount of active players it has now. Reducing rank brackets means that there would be less players able to be in the same battle together, and therefore the battle waiting times will massively increase. Developers decided to go for the lesser evil and increased rank brackets.

Why don't Tanki try to get more players?

I've game sites advertised on other game sites. What's impossible about it? Oh, wait. I forgot. That would dip into the pockets of the CEO. Excuuusssse me!!!

Unless Tanki is involved in other projects behind the scenes we don't know about. Perhaps projects that has nothing to do with gaming.

It's just like asking "why can't the world be perfect". It's physically impossible.

It might not be impossible, but it's definitely very difficult.
