A Twisted Twist

Chapter 3

Knowing that my notebook was most likely done for, I almost burst into tears, being the weak and possibly mentally unstable person I was, but I remembered that Lzer would make fun of me for this. In reality, Lzer was just a variant of “loser”, a code name for Lisa Lingue, a rich kid whose parents let her have anything she could wish for. So she walked around like she was doing a favor for everyone just by being there, and most people had gotten used to her pompous attitude at school. But once she stepped into Avail Academy, everyone feared her only because they didn’t want to be the target of her numerous barbs.

Instead, I opened another compartment in my bag and retrieved a piece of origami paper, then folded it into a swan with precision. By the time I had finished two swans and an airplane, the bus tires eked out a panicked squeal and slammed into the curb, and it was miraculous that the tires didn’t pop under such intense pressure. After settling the vehicle down, we all alighted, then waited for a teacher to open the locked entrance.

Contrary to popular belief, Avail Academy wasn’t a school for the elite students in town; it was just some lowly afterschool for elementary and middle schoolers. Despite being in seventh grade, my parents still felt that having me at home wasn’t safe. Instead of spending my days advancing in academics and secret ciphers, I had the joys of being locked in a dungeon where everyone insulted me for my glasses, my lack of friends, and even my intelligence.

Though I had tried to ignore all my tormentors, Lisa “Lzer” Lingue always caught my attention and provoked me, the only one who could elicit a reaction from me. Rebellious in nature, she also spent her days reading insults on the internet and reciting comebacks. Whenever a fight began, anyone could bet their money on Lzer, who probably desired to incite anger and distrust among all. However, there was one person who could ask her to stop: Hanen Hervon, the cousin of Kris, so Lzer made sure that her worst side came out whenever Hanen wasn’t watching, usually during Kris and Hanen’s guitar class on Wednesday.

Once I had finished my simple homework, the teachers, underachievers who would probably end up managing a fast food joint at retirement if they were lucky, always asked for help on their assignments. That was because I was smarter than the others and that I refused to work on more trivial extra work assignment by Avail faculty. So I hoped to evade Teacher AJ’s demands for help on her grammar worksheet and more importantly, Lzer’s unrelenting disses. At 5:37, I finally went home and finished what I hadn’t done in homework.

“I think I’m getting dumber,” I commented when my parents asked me about Avail.

“Don’t say that, Jo-Ann. Everyone knows that you’re pretty smart,” my parents consoled, but they were clueless. They had never been inside Avail, never really been there.

I still had the misfortunes of heading to that hopeless waste of time every day, Avail Academy. Though the homework load became slightly larger in preparation for the standardized tests, I usually still had an hour or two to kill at the end of each day.

So did everyone else, especially Lzer, who now enjoyed insulting everyone with the countless comebacks and other phrases she picked up from her snobby friends almost every day of the week. Since her workload was decreasing, unlike a public school system, she elected to spend time inciting conflicts. It was so annoying that even Bryanna, her best friend in Avail, couldn’t stand her after a few days. Instead, Bryanna moved over to my table and even interacted with me and the other unpopular kids. But come Monday, she would become magnetically attached to Lzer again. Soon, I saw a pattern, and began to avoid Bryanna, who was a two-faced person. And life was lonely in the corners of a broken-down office serving as Avail.

But that didn’t stop me completely. Instead, I picked up on balancing markers when Mr. Hervon banned me from watching some Disney Channel show for lying that I had homework on Friday, then restating that I had finished when Ms. Chucklton, the nature instructor, didn’t come. Not that I had anything against Fridays, it was just that the dull nature instructor who visited usually put people into comas and I didn’t want any collateral damage.

Finally, I came home, and settled into the routine of making more ciphers and codes, each more complex than the other. That was when someone knocked on the door.

My older sister rushed to answer it, then gasped in shock at the random guy in a dark suit and sunglasses. “I’m looking for Jo-Ann Palano,” he demanded, and my family began to bicker with the man, confirming that he had the right name.

I thought I heard my name in the midst of their chatter. “That’s me.” I stammered as I approached the man, who towered over me. He handed me a business card. “I’m with R.T.E. Intelligence.”

What he had in his other hand was my missing notebook.

Yep, that's the end of another chapter.  I hope this is published soon, as it is dedicated to the beginning of my semi-competitive writing career.  Anyways, have fun reading my story and wait patiently for chapter 4!

One thing I ask though... please leave some feedback so I can improve the next chapters, which are actually pretty boring.  (Story development)

Ch.4 is a disappointment, but look out for Ch. 13.5, where the story actually becomes slightly interesting.

If you haven't already, please check out some potentially awesome pieces by P.R., like Chapter 2 and Chapter 1 of this series.  And try saying the title three times fast.  (For those with perfect enunciation)

Thanks for taking your time and reading!

Yay, it's back! Great job as always! Hmm... wonder what's the deal with these ciphers, and who this RTE guy is. As always, waiting for more!

Also, please don't get into the habit of changing titles too often, I've had enough of that with @Kevred's Crimson Blades
