Why does it have to be hot to taste good?

This is more for those who love their food spicy hot. Why does food have to torture you with hot pain to taste good? I have a friend who cannot eat food without it being hot, hot, hot. He cooks with hot peppers and then adds raw hot peppers as a garnish. He keeps Jalapeno peppers on hand for a snack. Every morning for breakfast he has scrambled eggs cook with hot peppers and adds hot sauce on top of them. He doesn't stop at Jalapeno, oh no. He uses a lot of Cayenne peppers, too.

 

A couple weeks ago, I took him to my favorite bar/restaurant that has the thickest, juiciest hamburgers cooked to order. When we got our meal he reaches in his pocket and pulls out a bottle of hot sauce and proceeds to douse the hamburger with it. He takes a bite and says, "Mmmmm. You're right. This is the best hamburger. As good as you may think yours tastes great, mine tastes much, much better."

 

To me, hot spicy food burns when I bite into it, burns going down, burns in my stomach and burns coming out the other end. Now, tell me. Why does food have to be tortuous and abusive to your body to taste good?

Meh, some people like Spicy food (me personally I don't mind a couple slices of Jalapeno on a sandwich once in awhile, or General Taos chicken or Spicy fried chicken, or Fire sauce on Tacos) some people like REALLY spicy food, I can't handle anything hotter than a Jalapeno or maybe a habanero while other people can eat stuff like Ghost peppers without hardly blinking. Don't know why but one reason could be it's part of their heritage (i.e their could partly be from India or Mexico both of which are very well known for their spicy foods) apart from that I don't know

Okay, you mentioned that you like Jalapenos on a sandwich once in awhile, General Taos (did you mean General Tso?) chicken and spicy fried chicken and fire sauce on Tacos. But you didn't say why you like the hot and spicy. I can cook with bell peppers and get all the pepper taste I want without the burn. Why the burn?

I'm not too much into spicy food but I don't mind a little here and there to make some plain pasta or rice more exiting. 

 

The friend you speak of is probably a lot less sensitive to spice than you are and can probably taste the actual flavour of the sauce through the heat, the more chilli stuff you eat the less sensitive you become.

I eat a lot of ramen and not once was it dry, had hot peppers or hot sauce. Mostly, I cook it half way and add it to a stir fry. While the vegetables are cooking the ramen will finish cooking. Add chunks of meat to your stir fry. Not dry and not spicy hot.

Oh, yeah, I can see that. Your girlfriend invites you over for supper. She asks, "Well, how did you like it?" You say, "It wasn't edible, but it tasted good." HUH!?!

When I was 6 or so I tried to make ramen but I forgot the water :lol: (Well its funny now anyway)

Well, actually, you can make ramen without water. As a snack, I put a large amount of butter in a frying pan, break up the ramen  into smaller pieces and brown it on low heat. Some of the smaller pieces will burn, but they taste good, too.
