Upgrading: Where do I go from here?

Recommended Posts

I feel I'm in a position where I need to concentrate on M3, which I am, but the prices are getting higher. My playstyle is more of a supportive role. My main combo is Vulcan/Titan. I clear out (or attempt to) enemy nests or weaken their defence by weakening the team health. I keep annoying snipers busy to give my team a little bit of an edge. I'm not the type to camp at base and hope for the best, unless it's a small to medium map with some advantage points to shoot from. I usually fight midrange, but will go in close to keep the enemy busy while a flag is being stolen or a ball being carried. I'm not opposed to changing playstyle if the situation calls for it.

I need to fine tune my garage. Here's what I have:

TURRETS:

Firebird M2.6

Smoky M2.4 (M2.5 in progress) Alt: High Precision Aiming System

Vulcan M2.9 (M2. 10 in progress) Alt: Incendiary Band

Thunder M2.7 Alt: Subcaliber Rounds

HULLS:

Viking M2.8

Hunter M2.3 (M2.4 in progress)

Dictator M2.2 (M2.3 in progress)

Titan M2.8 (M2.9 in progress)

Everything else is M0.

Which turrets and hull do you think I should concentrate on more for M3, then M3.10 (20?) I'm open for any and all suggestions and discussion.

EDIT: Added Alts to Turrets.

Upgrade Titan, Thunder, Smoky and Hunter, then upgrade Viking and Fire for DM. Do not upgrade Dictator unless you are excellent in peek-a-boo and can avoid close range fights most of the time.

Thank you for your input. I have Dictator on another account. It was a good hull until the advent of Magnum. On this account, I got the M1 in a kit, but didn't do anything with it. Then I decided to buy the M2 just to keep it upgraded with my garage. I'm not planning to do much with it, unless someone else changes my mind with some good solid reasoning.

I don't play DM very often, mostly for missions. I have been using Firebird/Viking, but in the last 2 DM missions I used Smoky/Viking and was getting 10 to 15 kills without alterations, which is about what I get with Firebird.

I would just stick with hunter if you're going to use a medium hull with turrets like thunder and smoky.

That extra .5 units of speed isnt worth sacrificing a whopping 300 units of weight.

And dictator is just a big target.

You have way too many items. At this point if you want to continue upgrading without investing actual money, you have to pick a single combo and upgrade that to M4, then use it to earn more crystals to upgrade the rest of your garage. I'd strongly recommend not to go for Dictator, Viking, Vulcan or Thunder, but that's just my personal preference and everyone's play style is different.

Smoky is not OP by any means, but it's a solid choice and it seems to fit your play style well enough. I've been here for a little over a year, during this period Firebird has always been strong. I have stock M2 Firebird on a Lt Colonel and it yields impressive results, so I'd suggest upgrading it as well. You don't need both Viking and Hunter on the same account, it would be redundant. Viking is way too unstable in general, Hunter is superior overall.

TL;DR Focus on Hunter, Smoky/Firebird from now on.

Um what?

Maybe at Legend 25 when all else is bought.  Else a waste of valuable crystals.

I agree with above, upgrading many things at once could prove to be a burden on your account (unless, somehow, you open a couple million crystals in containers and have the patience to wait till sales). However, racking up crystals is super easy in today's Tanki - in one month with everything ranging from promo code drops or contests in their section or the Newspaper, you can win up to a hundred thousand crystals, even more, pretty easily with a small amount of effort. That being said, my personal upgrades, if I had your choice, would be Viking and Titan for hulls, and Smoky for turrets.

In the current meta, Vulcan is pretty useless in high ranks, it's only good with the Incendiary Band alteration, but that only works if you have an Isida to keep you going for long, and that Isida needs to be careful not to completely remove your self-burn, otherwise the alteration doesn't work properly. Smoky has some crazy alterations that can prove to be effective in a tremendous amount of situations, like Cyro Rounds and Assault Rounds. Other weapons that really "got a buff" from these new alterations are Railgun, Striker and especially Hammer - it's Dragon Breath and Duplet alterations are actually insane and guarantee you a kill, but this, of course, is a long-term investment that you shouldn't focus on right now.

It's important that you keep one, or if you want more, a maximum of two combinations being at the top of the priority list till you reach Legend, until then you can save up month after month and upgrade at sales.

Thank you all for your input. I know I'm going to run into trouble financially if I keep trying to do all these upgrades. That's why I'm putting this out to the Community for some suggestions.

I have the Incendiary Band on the Vulcan and has proved to be quite useful when attacking the enemy base. At this rank, I'm noticing that I'm more useful decreasing health rather than killing. Except for Mammoth, it's stronger than Vulcan.

With the above suggestions, right now, I'm thinking about changing my main to Smoky/Hunter and keep Firebird for close combat. The others I'll leave as is for now.

Hi.

For now I'd only save Crystal for End/New Year discounts.

Wait for the stupid Overdrives, I know I sound childish, and see which hull/overdrive is better for your style.

I'd go with Fire and 1 of the other 3 turrets you have, then 1 hull of all of them. No more alts, except maybe compact tanks for Fire.

Then you could save for an M3 kit when you get to that rank to complement your 1 hull and 2 turrets. But you could also just focus on fully MUing more of your equipments and modules.

Smoky is also brilliant with Titan. You could also buy Smoky afterburn alt (70000 crystals) or Thunder subcaliber alt (20000 crystals) if you hate getting damaged by your own splash.

Guess it depends on what "many" means.  Multiple items of similar nature is a waste.  But - upgrading a couple combos + modules at same time is best way to make use of sales - since you really only get one upgrade per item per sale.

Vulcan useless at high ranks?

Then what does that make it at low-mid ranks where your fire module is 30% or less, and many don't have a heavy hull as they are just so slow?

At high ranks you can have upgraded heavy hull and ~ 50%fire protection to reduce the inevitable afterburn. An m3+ Vulcan on m3+ heavy hull with ~ 50% fire module can fire for a long time before self-destructing.

I personally feel like it's damage is quite less than what it should be, maybe that's just me nitpicking...

My Fire protection is M2.3. How can I tell what the percentage of protection is?

You're path is already defined. Just MU to M3 what you already have going and you should be good to go. Your garage is in a better shape than I had it when I was your rank.

It should say in your garage. Look at its stats.

I compared what the upgrade says in my garage and the wiki. I didn't realize that the numbers in the upgrade were the protection %. Right now, I have 28% protection. M2 is 25% to 35% and seems to go up one percent per MU.

In your garage click the module.  Should show your protection if you pretend to upgrade.

OR

2.3.... 3 steps after stock 25% = 28%.

Stick with a combo you know you can get consistently good results with and once you can M4/M4 it, you can start start buying other M3s. I stuck with Shaft/Hunter for about two years since Brigadier before I could get Hammer, Titan, and Striker. Now they're all M4.
