If you buy this drone, you unlock its custom mine placements which appear in a separate tab. There you can buy them so you can suit your mines according to your needs or playstyle. Custom mine placements only unlock once you fully micro-upgrade the drone.

I think you realise that it's very unlikely that devs will add a customisation feature for just a single drone, because I don't really see how others could be customised. Also, this adds unnecessary complication to the interface without that great of an improvement to the game. And of course, this gives buyers even more advantage from drones, as if it wasn't bad enough already.

The current mine placement already gives buyers an advantage because it covers such a large area, which can completely shut off a base if done three or four times (eight times in a single battle, which makes it impossible to attack even if you have maximum mine protections). In this case, I do not see a single line of mines doing more damage than that or some other design which players can perhaps easily go over. 

 

Also yeah, I agree with you on that, I have no idea how other drones could be customized, maybe: 

• Custom blast radius, damage and impact force for Blaster -- the stronger the impact, the lesser the damage becomes
• Custom health cut-off for Lifeguard -- choose at which point do you want to drone to heal you; currently, it heals you at zero health

It's just a customization feature for those who would like to do it, not to improve the game, yep.
