What Happened To Tanki?

Recommended Posts

Hey, what's up everyone? I probably shouldn't even have a say in this but what happened to the old Tanki? I used to play this game 2011-2014 or so before I quit. Recently, I came back and tried playing and it is completely Pay-to-Win. Does this bother anyone else? Back when I played, crystal boxes were a thing, the only items were the big five (health, nitro, armor, mines, and double damage), and it wasn't confusing to play. It seemed like a lot more people enjoyed it as well or so it seems based on the current player count and the amount of people in the forums. I used to enjoy the game a lot, like a lot. I participated in and won multiple forum contests and had a good team for tournaments. There was never a better feeling than winning a contest from the newspaper and having the tiny bit of crystals added to your account.

I think the time I quit was a month or two after the hammer was added? Basically, I'm just wondering if anyone feels the same way about the direction the game is taking. I think the devs see that Tanki is slowly dying and keep adding new stuff thinking it will make more people join but in reality all it does is make the current players leave. I think at one point they even tried adding a first person shooter version of Tanki that ran off a different software but I guess that was a bust.

A good way to fix this, in my opinion, is add a legacy server. I know its not going to happen because the people who own Tanki are trying to squeeze as much money as they can out of it before it falls to the dust but might as well get my idea out there.

In the legacy server:

  • Crystal boxes are a thing again.
  • Boosts don't look bad anymore, they look like they used to in 2013.
  • All weapons and hulls from 2014 onward are removed.
  • Shaft's laser is removed.
  • Garage is less complicated and reverted back to the way it was.
  • You can choose whatever server you want to play instead of auto matching up. This is probably the thing I hate the most. Now they make you pay to even do that. It used to be so simple. If you wanted a long CTF match on Silence, all you had to do was look for the right server.
  • Paints are simple again instead of being complicated.

This legacy server will in no way replace the new Tanki as I am sure a lot of people enjoy it the way it is now but I want it to be an option for everyone else who loves the old game and wants an opportunity to play it the way it was originally. Switching into the legacy servers should be as simple as changing regions in the game. Again, I'm thinking out the boot here and I know it won't happen but it is always nice to dream.

I'm guessing most of the OG players are not even playing anymore so this post will likely gather dust but if anyone out there is down for this feel free to like and give a comment about what you think.

In the legacy server:

  • Crystal boxes are a thing again. - They ruin the game's economy as players would often farm them.
  • Boosts don't look bad anymore, they look like they used to in 2013.  - The supply boxes you mean? I think they look fine.
  • All weapons and hulls from 2014 onward are removed - Why? They've added a lot more diversity to gameplay and all are fairly balanced (per Tanki anyways).
  • Shaft's laser is removed - Really? Shaft is very strong as it is, it would be insanely overpowered if the laser was removed.
  • Garage is less complicated and reverted back to the way it was - I agree that the garage has become overcomplicated - Tanki is no longer a game you can simply jump into and play as a beginner, you need to learn stuff.
  • You can choose whatever server you want to play instead of auto matching up. This is probably the thing I hate the most. Now they make you pay to even do that. It used to be so simple. If you wanted a long CTF match on Silence, all you had to do was look for the right server - You can buy a Pro pass and play in Pro battles if you want to play battles like that.
  • Paints are simple again instead of being complicated - Impossible, there are so many special paints that it would be essentially impossible to re-assign protection values to paints. Plus, the Protection rework has actually simplified stuff quite a lot, which is good in my opinion.

Know what else ruined the economy? The DEVs making it so its Pay-to-win. All your points, just like mine, are matters of opinion. My suggestion was that a legacy server be made for people who want to play it which apparently you \would not. That is totally fine.

At this point all these updates were so long ago that discussing them is pointless. Every single argument for and against them has already been said multiple times, and all these features have existed (or been removed) for years, so no point even talking about their removal/re-addition.

As for making a separate "Legacy" server, I'll just copy-paste the same reply I always use for this suggestion:

Let me just tell you some things that developers mentioned about this in the past:

  • Old versions of the game are outdated and incompatible. There is no button they can just press to revert the game back to its 2012 state overnight.
  • Creating a single server with the older version of the game would require enormous amounts of time and money. It's basically like creating a whole new game from scratch.
  • Servers require funding and maintenance to keep them running. This can only be done if there is a lot of demand for whatever the server hosts.
  • Whether you like it or not, the reality is that previous versions of the game are much, much worse than now. The current version has dozens of useful features which weren't there years ago, so while the balance may have been better back then (this is very arguable), the overall game was on a much lower level.
  • Even if the game still has a significant amount of people, who would be interested in playing an older version, the vast majority of them will check it out, play for 5-10 minutes, get bored and go back to the main game. Servers may be full on the first day, but the hype will die down extremely fast and only a dozen or so players will want to keep playing it.
  • This would drive players away from Matchmaking battles and make MM less effective, which is the last thing devs want.

So as you can see, making a "2012 experience" would be a terrible business decision and nothing more than a small gift to satisfy players' curiosity. It will never happen.

Either way, for most of your opinions you're in the minority. Most players already got used to the not-so-new changes like new turrets and graphics, as well as new paints, matchmaking, etc.

That's just a necessity for an old free-to-play game to survive. They tried doing only cosmetic purchasable items in Tanki X, but had to abandon the idea because it seems like it wasn't bringing in enough revenue.

It seems like the older version was more balanced. Especially with the point of supplies being more available than ever before. It is at the point where everyone has them so they are not even special. If everyone uses them why are they there? Not having them would be the same effect.

Which older version? In pre-rebalance times (before 2012) is was Rico and Freeze dominating in most battles. Then it was Firebird and Twins for a long time. Then it was Isida and Vulcan, then Magnum, then Firebird, then Freeze, and now it's Vulcan, Striker, Hammer, and a few other OP alts. Balance was never perfect in Tanki, but at least now it seems like all turrets and hulls are playable and I'm seeing the biggest variety of equipment in games than ever before.

Supplies are a different story. They make the game more dynamic and add a separate element of skill, since you need to carefully decide which supplies you want to activate and when - this was not the case before Smart Cooldowns, and people used to spam all 3 supplies as soon as they spawn.

It became a trashy and p2w mobile game.

So pushing a button at the right time is "skill"?

Devs think so. They should play MM more and see what can some excellent Rail players do. They have incredible accuracy and rarely miss.

You're proposing to "fix" things that aren't actually problems, but rather things that are different from the version of Tanki you remember. This is not the correct approach.

You haven't actually mentioned any of the legitimate problems with the game besides P2W. Times change, and you can't look at the game from the same perspective as you did back in 2013. Note that the contingent of Tanki players has changed a lot in six years, and everyone has a different idea of what "legacy Tanki" means. I for one, don't want 5 out of the 6 changes you want on the legacy server.

Well, isn't that technically what the whole game is about? Pushing the right buttons at the right time?

Well you got me there.  :P

  • Crystal boxes are a thing again. Clearly you like mults then.
  • Boosts don't look bad anymore, they look like they used to in 2013. ehh I guess
  • All weapons and hulls from 2014 onward are removed. Only remove Magnum and the new alterations.
  • Shaft's laser is removed. This would make Shaft OP then
  • Garage is less complicated and reverted back to the way it was. what? I've seen old pictures of the garage back then and it's a mess
  • You can choose whatever server you want to play instead of auto matching up. This is probably the thing I hate the most. Now they make you pay to even do that. It used to be so simple. If you wanted a long CTF match on Silence, all you had to do was look for the right server. Yup, I agree on this. Sadly the devs purposefully ignore the community so this will never happen.
  • Paints are simple again instead of being complicated.  uhh...

Keep in mind I joined in late 2016.

I read Gangham's comment.... there is one thing I disagree on: Remove Shaft's laser. What kind of idea is that?!

Ok everyone, what should Alternativa do to bring back the old players to the game?

There's nothing that tanki can do to bring back old players. Their only hope is to recruit new players.

Well... RIP Alternativa.. no more dollars if there are very few people playing.

The only hope to recruit new players is fix bunch of issues.

Instead of fixing the rank brackets in battles, matchmaking's loading times, or performance issues, they worry about changing the game's loading screen, a "gender war", and adding minor tweaks to some turrets and alterations which doesn't solve most of the balance problems.

Well, those new players won't last long....

I guess Alternativa are trying to hook up new players by adding "Gender War"... etc.....

well it seems as if tanki devs just dont have a think about what they have done and expect players to get used to it, they may answer a few questions in a v log but other than that, nothing much happens

us players just get used to it, example when the friend list thing was reduced to 300 maximum, many people were complaining (even myself) but these days i barely find anyone who even remembers that update

onto MM, when it was first released, the forums and chat were filled with full of rage and anger, these days most people have adapted to MM and still a few people do complain, you gotta understand that whatever update tanki does, just get along with it

complaining is gonna do nothing. i cant imagine a worse update than MM, tanki got a lot of hate, lost many players but still devs did not do anything. and in that situation if devs did not listen to us, you'd expect them to listen to our tiny little complaints about "balance" and "nerfs" and "buffs"?

TL;DR: simple, just get used to the updates, or if u hate MM then play pro battles which dont have drugs enabled

You know - the missing piece of the puzzle - whatever the heck that is... <_<
