April Fool's Joke — Update to In-Game Chat System

As many of you have already figured out by now, this has been an April Fool's joke.

 

Those who clicked the link at the end of the post were led to a Google form. There they had to enter their nickname to receive a free container as a reward for taking the joke.

 

In the end, the form collected 2,629 nicknames (none of them mults I'm sure  :ph34r:). I'll be handing out the containers today.

 

I hope this little joke put a smile on your face. I know we don't always get things right straight away, and that some of our updates aren't too popular. But I hope you understand that everything we do is done in good faith, with the purpose of making the game more enjoyable for you, while keeping this business afloat for our employees and their families.

With tomorrow’s (Tue April 2nd) server restart at 02:00 UTC, we’ll be implementing an important update for the in-game chat system. Here’s all you need to know about it.

Why we’re changing the system

Over the years, we’ve been receiving many complaints about spam and abuse in the in-game chat feature. We’ve tried our best to control it through automated systems, and with the valuable assistance of our Chat Moderators team.

However, we’ve been working hard to find a more efficient and permanent solution that will guarantee an end to all abuse in the in-game chat system. And we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve finally created it!

We’ve already tested this system with a sizeable cohort of players on a special server and it has worked very well. Of course, we’ll be monitoring the live version over the next few months to make sure it works as intended.

How it will work

So here’s how the system will work.

Starting with tomorrow’s server restart, every player will receive a free bundle of 20,000 characters (letters and numbers only) to use in chat. This free bundle will be granted every month, on the first day of the month.

Once the bundle has been consumed, you’ll be able to purchase bundles for additional characters from the Shop. There will also be special bundles for emoticons and animated gifs, all available in the Shop.

Why this system will reduce abuse

We’ve noticed that most abuse happens through spamming and text flooding. This system works by taking away the spammer’s “ammunition”, or at the very least, making it inconvenient for them to spam.

Our analytics show that players use an average of 1873.96 characters per month, so the free starter bundle should be more than sufficient for most regular players.

We’re really excited about finally finding a long-term and efficient way to guarantee a pleasant chat experience in Tanki Online. And we’re sure you’ll love it too!

By the way, to celebrate this update, we’ve created an “Early Bird Bundle” that you can buy right now from the Shop. This bundle is only accessible through the special link at the bottom of this announcement. It will not be visible in the regular Shop.

The bundle will contain an additional 30,000 characters (on top of what you get for free), plus 1 Regular and 1 Weekly Container, at HALF PRICE!

However, this offer goes away with tomorrow’s server restart at 02:00 UTC, so you need to snatch it right now.
