Good day, tankers!  I suppose that no one’s reading this since you all are too busy farming stars. Still, let’s get started.

Challenges are basically what I call “Star Months”, since they involve earning stars and last for a month.  By the end of these events, you’ll probably be sick of playing, haven’t earned your dream skins, and annoyed that another one is starting soon.  Let’s talk a bit about stars first.

A Brief Story About Stars... ★

...And the buyer boosts that came along with them

Stars were invented when angry Isida players charged into ’s office and demanded that Crazy Weekends be removed since they were discriminating against healers.   then agreed since he was an Isida himself. Just kidding. Well, they were actually first introduced in War: Domination, a replacement for the kill quota done in the first War.  As the story goes, people started liking them since you earned a cool three containers for the first five stars you earned, and up to ten containers for an easy thirty stars.  Because they all liked it so much, someone decided to post that Crazy Weekends should be replaced with stars instead of kills, and the administration agreed.

Tanki then decided that it would re-introduce stars for “Star Week”, which was a flop the first time, as people had to earn a hundred stars just to earn one measly container.  Eventually, that number was lowered to fifty (Tanker’s Day), then twenty-five (Halloween), to satisfy hungry tankers.

Finally, Tanki moved on to Challenges and changed the system from earning 700 to 1,100 stars in a week to accumulating 2,000 in four weeks and added some more prizes, including paints, supplies, shot effects, and crystals in addition to containers.  Please click on this link to access a list of the rewards, past and present.

After the War, the raised bar for the next star week prompted a release of the “Easy Stars” pass, which enabled tankers to earn twice as many stars to boost container earnings.  This then evolved into the “Battle Pass” which gives tankers extra rewards but no extra stars. Now, premium is used to gain the double stars that the “Easy Stars” did before.

Same picture, different pass.

I guess this is maybe way too much info on stars.  But I suppose it’s time to see how to earn them.

★ Planning How to Earn Stars

The Panic-Free Way!

But first...

8HJ6mJX.jpg?1

I get it, not all of you tankers have the time and energy to get your dream Legacy and XT skins.  But if you aren’t sure if you can, I’ve got just the perfect source for you: Clan Leader, Star Farmer, and Pro @123hi1239!  He finished 2,000 stars in under 3 days, I believe, and has completed both the January and February Challenge, as well as being a proud owner of the “Demonic” Firebird Skin.

Hello, Hi, so how did you get started in Star Hunting?

I’m not quite sure, I was quite motivated by the rewards when they came out, so I started to play more.  Also, I enjoy collecting stars.

Alrighty, pretty nice.  I see that you have a Demonic Skin, as well as the rewards from both January and February Challenges.  So what got you there?

Well, I play a lot.  Add that to premium and the battle pass, and a tanker can get a pretty long way in a short time.  Also, to maximize efficiency, I ignore missions and press the “Quick Battle”. This requires a tank that is compatible in various battle modes.

Ah, that’s quite well prepared.  So do you have a “set” mindset that is there when you are about to play?

When I open Tanki I do not think about what missions I have. All I think about is getting as high of a score as possible. I do this by getting as many kills in a battle as I can. If I can I will do other things like scoring goals, capturing flags, since these can net more points. I do NOT look at the scoreboard while playing as this distracts me and takes time.  If you are respawning, this is the time to look at the scoreboard if you want. (P.R. Note: This is what the Youtubers do too) If you are in a low position on the scoreboard, do not worry, just focus on getting points. (There have been times where I was last place in a battle and then in the last 2 minutes had a breakthrough and made it to second place).

Pretty neat.  So, do you have a combination that constantly can weather through anything from a CP to a RGB?

My go-to combo is a Shaft M2 (10/10), with a Rapid-Fire Alteration, and a Viking M2 (10/10).  I also equip a Mine protection, as well as Thunder and Railgun protections, since I am mostly killed by those turrets.  I also like to go with a Driver Drone (speeds up overdrive), but a Lifeguard Drone is also effective at higher Micro-Upgrade levels.  And to top it all off, I use a lot of supplies.

Great!  Thanks for all this information!

You're welcome.

With that being said, it's probably a good idea to think about how many stars you will earn.  Let's go and try to set ourselves some goals!

YzeNeZ2.jpg?1

First, it’s probably wise to find out how many stars you earn per battle.  @Blload’s bot Tanki Online on Discord measures a premium tanker as earning around 6 stars per battle and a normal tanker, 2 stars.  For me, it’s around 2.1. Find yours so you can estimate the time you will take.

After finding your average star earnings per battle, it’s time to set a goal, get ready to earn your stars.  If you are going to be a diehard star farmer and not stop until the final stage, it’s probably wise to divide and conquer.  So if you want to finish in 10 days, then that’s about 2000/10 = 200 stars per day. And let’s say your star amount is 2.5. If you divide 200 by 2.5, that is 80 battles you have to do.  In that case, it would also be a side challenge to race against yourself, to see if you can beat the time that it took you to earn stars the day before.

If you don’t want to go for the big prize, it’s wise to just use your missions as a guideline to see how many you’d want to earn per day.  Another method is completing around half a stage to two stages per day to earn a good number of the early rewards, for example, a nice paint or the 100 supplies bundle. Whatever goal you set, make sure you can accomplish it without a major panic attack.

To buy or not to buy…

SVNguD9.png

The battle pass. Ah, everyone wants it.  Well, even me, and the most I did this time around was play two days before a quick rage quit.  At a relatively cheap price of five dollars USD, it boosts rewards. But is it really worth it? That is up to you.  Whether you want to use those dollars to give a single paint and few extra containers, or get a totally sweet new skin, it’s your choice.  However, I would probably not recommend it unless you are reaching a higher tier, like around Tier 20 to 30, otherwise, just earning an extra paint, a few containers, and a small handful of crystals and supplies isn’t really worth a Lincoln.

★ Earning Stars

First, a quick visit to the garage.

Well, when wishing to have that new XT or Legacy skin, the first step is to start playing.  But since stars are dependent on your team and score, you might want to consider a few things.

dmZNoED.jpg?1

Hulls and Turrets

PGynkGE.png AL6lSoR.png

  • The ideal hull for playing in challenges is Hunter.  While many tankers prefer the faster and more aesthetically pleasing Viking or the gold-hunter's Dictator, Hunter's higher center of mass makes it more stable, especially when dropping off of a bridge on Highways when a rogue Firebird is following you.

  • A melee/short distance turret is preferred with a light or medium hull if you want a versatile combination built well for most maps.  However, Firebird and Freeze are both better than Isida (for attacks) because they have after-effects that weaken or kill the tank they are attacking and can finish off several tanks while Isida only targets one.  However, Isida has an extra source of point-earning, healing, which can skyrocket it to the top of the leaderboard if used properly.

  • Splash damage turrets (Magnum, Thunder, Twins, Striker), coupled with medium hulls, are preferred because they can potentially double kill and earn more points that way.  Also, the strong impact force will mess up a Railgun or Smoky’s aim, and redirect the flame of Firebirds away from you.

  • Stay far away from equipping something like XP/BP to show off your shiny Hornet M2. Swallow your pride and go for a Viking or Hunter with more protection but less speed.  While it might look cool, ‘drugger Firebirds’ will most likely pick you up as an easy kill.

  • Shaft can be a deadly force if you can find an ideal camping spot.  Often times, people are so engrossed in the thick of battle that a Shaft can emerge undetected and snipe off enemies.

Drones and Alterations

JVW2tax.png GfqxozE.pngJa1Me8c.png

  • Assault Drone, which unlocks at the rank of Warrant Officer 1, is pretty good starting off drone if you are one who relies on kills for points.  Another such drone is Driver, with an unlock rank at Warrant Officer 5, which speeds up overdrive. Those depend on kills, so refrain from using them if you are an Isida with Support Nanobots.

  • Lifeguard Drone is quite effective at higher Micro-Upgrade levels, especially used with a repair kit.  If you are a high-ranked Wasp, then it’s a good option if you know that you are often targeted by Shafts for a tasty snack.

  • Dragon's Breath is an early Hammer alteration that can prove to be pretty deadly, especially to those with no protections against Firebird.  With the help of a double damage, one can nearly finish off a Titan or Mammoth. However, in higher ranks, Duplet is more effective because you can eliminate an opponent in two quick shots instead of hoping that the afterburn will end up killing the player.

  • Firebird’s Compact Tanks is especially useful in middle ranks, where you can easily burn a tank in under two seconds, either finishing them off or forcing them to use a repair kit.  However, this is not useful if you are continually ambushed in melee range, since your energy bar will run out. So when using this alteration, keep in mind that you should try to reduce your opponent to around half health (5-7 ticks), then conserve your energy for another target, because it is very likely that the affected tank will burn to death.

  • Shaft's Rapid-Fire Alteration, when equipped with a double damage, can mean a nightmare for Wasps and Hornets.  Definitely a good buy to end the Wasps from capturing your flag every minute.

  • Striker’s Cyclone and Uranium Alterations are well-known for their destructive damage.  But it’s rather unfortunate to waste a large salvo on a single Mammoth and find yourself ambushed and killed.  Instead, use your single rockets on opponents at a distance and try to target a group of tanks rather than a single opponent.

Protections

HlW7h68.png

  • A decent Firebird protection will prove useful since there are quite a number of Firebirds out on the battlefield at any rank, plus the fact that several of the new waves of alterations contain afterburns, like Hammer’s Dragon’s Breath, Vulcan’s Incendiary Band, Firebird’s Compact Tanks (which intensifies the afterburn), and Smoky’s Incendiary Rounds.  Having a protection that can be used for multiple turrets greatly benefits you, especially if you are a Vulcan.

  • From the upper Sergeant ranks to the early Lieutenant ranks, Freeze is quite a large force on the field due to its common appearance in kits such as Cupid, Siberian, and Avalanche and relatively low unlock rank at M2.  So if you play with ranks such as these, then a Freeze module is one to invest in.

  • At middle/high ranks, Thunder appears prominently, and the damage taken can be lowered using a Thunder protection module.  It’s also quite effective against Thunder when three or four of them decide to take a shot at you in the middle of Desert.

  • Shaft protection should be used by lighter hulls, especially if they wish to capture flags or ambush the enemy, as they are easier targets for snipers and can be finished off easily if without a protection.  Also, at higher ranks, shaft players are usually more skilled, so you can’t bank on a noob missing an arcade shot.

  • Speaking of the higher ranks, Railgun’s protection is also pretty effective.  While in the middle-low ranks, most of the XP/BP wannabes miss their shots, when they return in the eSport ranks, they are deadly accurate, meaning that they will cause severe damage.  Equip Railgun protections if you are of a higher rank.

★ Waiting For Battle

Time to Battle!  Let's consider a few things first.

6oPPuLR.jpg?1

  • DM depends on your turret.  Usually, Thunders dominate at middle ranks and melees like Firebird and Freeze score higher on the leaderboard, while most other turrets are outflanked by the top 5 tankers, so keep that in mind when waiting for DM.

  • Don’t try to hunt the Juggernaut in JGR.  Instead, hunt for the people who hunt for the Juggernaut with turrets like Thunder and Striker, which do deadly amounts of splash damage, os even if you don’t get a kill, the next shot might earn you a boatload of experience and kills.

  • TDM is one of the worst modes to play to earn stars because it is dependent on kills without the distraction of secondary objectives.  That is, unless you are extremely skilled, then you can roam around and spawn kill while the opposing teammates yell at you for being a buyer hacker spawnkiller, which is actually quite fun when you are being yelled at and not the one being salty.

  • Try to capture points in CP mode without any teammates since they will take away from your score.  (Without teammates, you earn 10 points for neutralizing and 15 for capturing, if a teammate interferes in the middle of the capturing, you get 15 points for capturing only, and nothing if your meddling buddy interrupts you in the middle of neutralizing). Even though capturing points may seem like an excellent plan to farm points, keep in mind that a single assist from a friend may reduce your score.

  • CTF, ah, one of my old faves.  Capturing the flag is relatively easy in the first few moments of battle, so I would suggest to do so if you are one of the first on the battlefield.  Then, while most are ghosting or changing equipment, race home with the enemy flag and give your team a 1-0 lead. But if you know that you probably can’t survive a capture, it’s best to target the weaker players on the opposing team for tasty kills.

  • ASL is usually one of the modes that makes me go “blechhhh” and leave.  So, if you are Red Team, you will most likely spend your days messing up your K/D even more than you did in the previous gamemodes, so this one is a no.  While you might achieve high scores by delivering a few scores, it’s highly risky and not worth the time, especially if the blue base is hard to reach or if the other team is overpowered.  Blues, well, if the Red Team starts spawnkilling you, it’s probably time for a change of game.

  • RGB, see CTF, but then think about it as if you drop the ball and there are no teammates, then your work basically goes down the drain.  So you should probably concentrate on killing opponents with the ball or opponents who can threaten your ballholder. And if the ball is close enough to the goal, make a run for it.

Other Factors

ASMVF3n.pnguEVlEHy.png4GzTqXB.pngIyui4vB.pngMx6brjn.png

  • Gold boxes may as well be a distraction to any tanker above the rank of Warrant Officer 1.  By that time, most of you will have a M1/M1 combination and a small nest egg of crystals. Instead of hunting for the coveted Gold Box, one can take advantage of the time and complete an objective. (e.g. capturing the flag, scoring a goal).  Note: For ASL, attack the base when the drop site is away from the base.  Otherwise, equip a double damage and try to eliminate as many enemies before allowing someone else to pass.

  • Battle Situation.  If you landed in as a Fire-Wasp in a heated Parma RGB where your team is losing 3-0, and you see that three Shafts are aiming to eat you up, it might be a great time to leave.  Then again, there is that self conflict inside of you when you start up a new battle. Trying to earn three stars may seem implausible when you enter in two minutes later than the other tankers, so the basic goal is to shoot for a prize of one star, or 70 points in battle.  After that, it’s time to go dive into battle and soar towards the top of the leaderboard.

  • Battle Groups.  So, when grinding stars, it’s fun to do it with a friend or two.  However, the wait times are significantly longer, since you must be matched with another group of similar caliber.  Since that is the issue, save grouping with friends for the time in between a challenge or after you are done with your goal.

  • Missions.  While the best thing for a diehard star farmer is to ignore the missions given, if you are just casually making your way up the stages, missions might guide you through them.  For example, if you have these missions: then you can divide and conquer. Sometimes, it might take around ten battles to finish, while a lucky day might only require two or three.  Using these missions as a guideline will give you a goal to play for a few stars.

  • Themed Challenges.  Again, diehard star farmers should probably participate, since they’ve already won those registration crystals back with the past challenge.  But if you aren’t, let’s consider the numbers. Of the people who have purchased a themed paint and attended the challenge, there is about a 25% chance, give or take, that a tanker will take home the prize.  Knowing the average as of right now, the prediction is that a solid 1,000 stars will raise your chance to around a nice coinflip, 50/50 of taking home an animated paint or some other worthy prize. So if you are up to the challenge of earning about 1,000 stars, it’s a good idea to invest in those entry crystals.  However, if you are only a casual player with little time to play, it’s better to watch from the sidelines as you take the prizes from the first ten stages. And a special note for April Challenges: Don't buy the paint if you can't get the first tier of 850 stars.

  • Holidays and the amount of players.  Ugh, it’s kind of annoying when there are north of 25,000 players vying for a win in Matchmaking and you keep rotating onto multy loser teams, or being sent to battles with less than enough time to earn points for your stars.  On the other hand, when there are few players, you keep ending up with the same players on your team, which can be a pain if you end up on a Desert RGB with a team full of Fire-Wasps. So it’s advised to play when there are a good number of players, around 10,000 to 15,000, so that there is a team diversity and a higher chance of ending up in a full seven-minute battle.  Around now, this is probably around 8-10 UTC and 20-22 UTC for normal days, and nearer to the server reset times (2 UTC) during holidays. After all, we want to earn our stars, right? Then let’s earn them the smart way. Plus, it prevents mental breakdowns.

Well, now that we’ve got these factors down, let’s get to a bit of battle theory.  But not too much, alright? i don't want you to stop playing just to study.

★ On the Battlefield

It’s always good to be prepared!

Well, every battle brings new foes, and it’s time for a short little practice.  I’ve got a few scenarios, and you just need to choose what to do. With that being said, please give a warm welcome to a short little intro of Tanki Personalities and a Battle Theory Lesson.

5lsKThl.jpg?1

1.You meet a highly annoying Fire-Wasp with a double damage.  He is closing in on you, a Smoky and Viking with about 85% health.  What do you do? (Easy)

a. Scream loudly into your mic, ruining your voice chat with your best friend.

b. Attempt to fight back with the Firebird while backing away.

c. Drop a mine and pray that he will trip over it, then run far away.

d. Take two shots while hoping that one will be the critical that ends him.

Explanation

All three of the latter options are acceptable, but it’s probably best to go with c, placing a mine, if you are in lower ranks, and b, if you are in higher ranks and have a decent fire protection.

2. You are playing Quick Battles in Tanki to earn stars, playing as the powerful Hammer-Hornet.  All of a sudden, you see yourself being dropped into a Parma TDM, where an eager shaft starts chipping away at you every time you respawn, yet you do not want to drop out of the battle.  What do you do? (Medium)

a. Hide into the walls and ask your team to kill the shaft.

b. Equip double armor and speed boost and go about that way, hoping that the shaft won’t snatch you for an easy kill.

c. Take cover, and then slowly sneak up to the shaft and duke it out with him.

d. Change into a Viking-Hammer and return to the battle.

Explanation

Option a is pretty much a no-brainer, it’s really unlikely that the matchmaking teams will have a gracious teammate who would share an overdrive, much less help you win.  They need stars. Option c is also pretty stupid, as I know from personal experience. While shafts are not sniping, they are usually reserving their drugs in case of a surprise attack.  Option b is probably a better idea than a or c, but it still has a high risk factor, while Option d is most likely the best idea in general, unless you have a crazy weak Viking.

3. (Hard) During a normal Aleksandrovsk ASL, you are on the red team and doing well, attacking the base once and playing a strong force on the offense, killing several opponents, despite being a light Fire-Wasp.  However, the blue team has gotten their act together, sending in strong Mammoths equipped with Firebirds and Freezes to the scene, who do a great deal of damage to all attackers, tying the score. You have the flag right now and want to storm in, but you know it’s very likely you will die.  However, there are several teammates who are right behind you, trying to attack as well. Do you:

a. Run into the base, firing off at the mammoths, shouting “COWABUNGA” like you are diving, then publish into your Youtube Channel as a voice reveal to get more views.

b. Allow your teammates to go off first like a fine gentleman/gentlewoman so that you can capture while they get killed.

c. Drop the flag and kill the mults that are cowering behind random buildings.

d.Sneak around and kill the mammoths from behind, but die from their afterburns without attacking the base.

Explanation

Option a is probably best for the team, knowing that if you die, your two teammates will probably be able to capture, however, in a star hunt, it’s probably not the best option.  If you notice a lot of mults on the other team, then option c is probably the best one, netting kills and points for a high score, but if there aren’t easy kills, then go for option b, which will nearly guarantee a capture.  Option d is probably one of the worst options, but in real life, we always think that we can be the hero, killing everyone and capturing. It’s very risky, and it’s hardly worth the time and effort.

Well, it’s probably time to discuss something else.  I’m getting quite dizzy of all this battle theory.

★ Time Off

If you are sick of earning stars…

WWfum8n.jpg?1

It’s quite tiring to be a full-time gamer without having a little time off, don’t you say?  And there are some of us who can’t get through a few battles without going mental. (That would be me)  Besides, it gets kind of bad with your classmates laughing at you when you have a bad battle. Luckily for us all, there are a few options for a break from Tanki. Let's start with the ones for tankers who can't get enough of Tanki.

8XrOwPw.jpg?1

Parkour is a great way to relax after reaching your star goals, and to talk to friends who also happen to be online at the same time, while still being on your favorite game, ready to grind after a break. Plus, it's another way to show off your cool shot effects!

The Tanki Forum

Why, we're already here!

While it is not as visited as in its glory days, when the AWS had a AWC, when there were many famous forumers, this place is still a chill zone for tankers weary from battle.  There are places like the forum games place to let your imagination run wild, a game discussion to rant about how bad your team in matchmaking is, creativity to show off your art skills, and of course, my favorite, the AWS, where you can write about anything from a story based on your life to a guide about your best combination in Tanki.  And for eSports enthusiasts, there is a whole section on eSports clans and events. Whether it’s a short visit or a venture into the nooks and crannies of Tanki Forum, it’s a definite adventure to chat with friends.

Tanki Online Discord

qqs4sJ6.png

Well, with that being said, it’s kind of obvious that I had to bring up the official Tanki Online Discord Channel.  While it may not have an AWS, there are much more people to talk to, and you get a reply within seconds as opposed to hours or days on the forum.  Also, you can find a group to battle with while doing so, and relax while playing some little games similar to the forum, or compete for promocodes when the time is right!  For more information, please visit the Tanki Online Discord Hub.

Making Tanki Art

E19wm0S.png0h9Mudo.pngdDiasQ7.png

This is a way to relax, but it’s more like if you want to take a good few days off, rather than a minute or two to talk to friends.  Making Tanki Art feels like an accomplishment and you have something to show for your art skills.  If you want to win crystals, then the Best Artworks section should be your next stop!

Other Games

1ZN5qh7.png

When you can’t stand the thought of Tanki anymore, it’s time to migrate to other games. Watch as Cedric bans this article because I just wrote the previous statement. The change of pace or different theme might really help you cope with the anger of being matched with mults for several battles in a row.  After a terrible week of challenges, I found myself being embarrassed in class (we had a sub, alright?) while playing Tanki Online, and growing more and more irritated with the teams and irregular wait times. So I decided to switch to another game. After playing around with some options, I’ve found the slower-paced Bloons Monkey City quite enjoyable to toy around with. In fact, I even made a new account and improved significantly on Tower Defense Strategy.  Find something that suits yourself, and you might just recover from your Tanki Trauma.

I guess that’s a wrap for now, unless we can discuss overdrives.  But that’s another story. See ya!

Worked very hard.

Maybe...

Im proud of you

Aww thanks!

wow, who on earth even has the time to read all of that? lol

I don't use BP for showing off, just because I like it and I feel its 1 of the only combinations I kind of understand (or did before I quit playing). So for me, it's not pride, but purely feeling comfortable with the combination.

This is not meant to point out a mistake, or to derive from the guide. The guide is great and if I ever come back to playing I'll look at this for help.

:D

Wait, actually finishing that last bit (yes, I skipped the bit about taking breaks; sleep is for the old ), you play Monkey City? Do you do BTD Battles as well?

Would you be interested in doing a multiplayer sometime?

Anytime, unless I have inactivity issues, then that means that my parents are telling me to do hw.  Send a friend request to JGnaw (named after this one teacher I had) or percy67 (noob acc)

I can’t do it now, because it’s pretty late, but maybe tomorrow or the day after.

Spoiler much?

Well maybe a little but.. *shakes head* Sneezing? As I learned in Science when I was like 7, sneezing is a reflex action, is near impossible to prevent, etc. This is ridiculous.

We then did Jamaican Letter DBQ analysis... which was even longer than the lecture.  Pretty cool to start off on a bsd note and turn the tides on someone else.  Fortunately, i also aced my math quiz.
