Come Back Inside

"Do you remember when Mom took us to the beach?"

The lady gazed wordlessly into the night sky.

"I remember it well," the boy said as he folded his arms on the balcony railing. "She took pictures of us chasing the seagulls, and picking up shells... we had so much fun there."

"Doesn't really matter now, does it?" the lady whispered, trying not to let her voice crack.

A look of disdain flashed briefly on the boy's face. "Is that what those memories are now, Cassie? Meaningless?"

Cassie looked down at her feet, fighting back tears.

"She took us there to have a good time. We enjoyed ourselves. We enjoyed each being with other. She may be gone now, but the value of the time we spent out there isn't just lost."

The boy moved down the railing and leaned up next to his sister. His voice quivered as he continued.

"It hurts so much now that she is gone. And if she had a choice, like, some way to prevent the inevitable, I know she would have chosen life; she would want to stay here with us. Not just because she loved us, but because we love her, and she would know how horrible we would feel without her."

The lady wiped her eyes but continued staring downward. The driveway was three stories below them.

"A death in the family is the worst thing a person will ever go through, but it's also a time to remember how important it is to stay alive-"

The boy choked on his words as he started crying.

"Jacob-."

"Because if we stop living, who else's life will be ruined because we are gone?"

Jacob sank to his knees as his tears hit the balcony floor. "Cassie, please come back inside. Please don't destroy us. Please... don't destroy me."

Cassie turned and peered into the moonless night sky, just for a moment, before she stepped down from the railing and laid her hand on her little brother's back.

********

Two weeks ago, a good friend, whom I have known all of my life, stepped down from the railing.

I know we hear it a lot from many different places, and that may eventually cause us to ignore and even forget it, so I am going to say it here, again, as only a friend of a survivor can.

Please, I beg you to remember that you are never alone. You are never without hope. No matter how bad life becomes, it can't get any worse than ending. People need you, whether you know it or not, whether they act like it or not. You may be the only thing keeping someone off the railing.

It is a pleasure to present you a piece from our former reporter that holds such a powerful message. Definitely read it yourself. There is much to take from it.

Hey @sonofchrysalis3, great piece. Unfortunately, as I explained to Flex, the subject is a tad too heavy for a game forum. I feel that it's not our place (as a game) to dwell on such subject matter, especially since we're dealing with a younger audience. Posting this story could have ramifications (even legal ones) that we're not foreseeing, and I don't want to take that risk.

That said, this story DEFINITELY deserves to be published somewhere. Have you approached any Flash Fiction e-zines? There are a few that I'm sure would pick up the story.

Ending life is never a wise option. Everyone needs to open up. It's best to reach out. This advice might not be relevant to this story, but I am talking on behalf of all issues. Like depression, tension etc.

A great piece. Extremely deep.

Great writing soc3, you never fail to impress, and you never fail to pass deep and meaningful messages through short stories. You have insane talent and this is just another example of it.

I hope you're okay through this tough time man, sorry to hear about the loss.
