Gauss: To Buy, or Not to Buy? - Guide

It was June 7th, a few days after Tanki’s 10th Birthday. Unbeknownst to players, a turret was going to be released this very day. Players had only heard about this turret about a month or two before, and there was high anticipation for more details regarding this turret’s mechanics, and the release date of this turret. All of a sudden, a notification popped up on my phone. A YouTube notification, more specifically.

“Oh, it’s from Tanki EN. I wonder what this is,” I thought to myself. I clicked on the video. It was a trailer for Gauss. I watched the video through and through, trying to figure out why they had released this trailer for this turret, and trying to find out more of the specific details about this turret. “Looks cool! I can’t wait to get my hands on it!” I thought to myself again. I went back to playing matchmaking battles, thinking that more news would come in the coming week. All of a sudden, I went to my garage to change turrets. That’s when I noticed something - GAUSS HAD BEEN RELEASED! I was so excited that I impulsively bought it with the crystals I was saving to fully micro-upgrade my Viking M3. Fast forward to the time of writing this article. The turret hasn’t been out for a full week yet, but I have already grown to adore this turret, so much so that I played a heavy amount over the weekend, enough to earn about 250,000 crystals, thanks to the triple battle funds. I used almost all these crystals to micro-upgrade this turret.

Introduction

Hello guys, I am here to discuss the arrival of this turret and present a short guide on the benefits of this turret, and try to persuade you to buy this turret for yourselves. Let’s not waste time.

Firstly, I would like to discuss the strange arrival of this turret. In the past, Tanki only teased new equipment that would be coming to the game, and release more information closer to the exact time the equipment would be released into the game. This turret was slightly different. Yes, the Tanki developers only released a small amount of information about this turret before its arrival, but myself, along with will many others I suppose, did not expect this turret to be released so soon after its initial announcement. Kudos to you, Tanki developers! You did an AMAZING job of raising excitement, by releasing this turret so suddenly.

Why it should be bought

Let’s first introduce the main attributes of this turret. This turret has two separate firing modes - a quick shot mode, and a sniping mode (similar to Shaft and Striker). This turret has almost the same sniping mode as Striker, except that Gauss does not emit a laser showing enemies that they are being targeted, but rather this turret has two mechanical “ear-looking” pieces on either side, that raise when sniping. This turret is similar to Thunder in its splash damage, and amount of damage and the impact force is closely similar to that of Magnum. Now that we know the basics of this turret, let’s take a quick look at the cost for this turret at each of its modification levels:

Statistics

On the lower modification levels (M0-M2), the price for this turret is average among other turrets of the same modification level. Looking at the price for the M3 modification, however, Gauss is the second most expensive turret, only behind Freeze. At lower levels, this can be considered a wise investment, but if you are buying its M3 modification, and you are unsure about how you might like this turret or you played with a lower modification level, and didn’t enjoy using this turret, I would not suggest buying this turret at M3 (unless there is a sale, or you are open to trying something new).

Let’s look at the damage statistics for this turret:

guass_damage.png?width=500&height=71

The damage in sniping mode is significantly more than the damage in regular mode (more than double the damage), but after using a sniping mode shot, this turret has to take about three times as long to reload (useful if you are in long-range combat, and have an obstacle to hide behind, such as wall).

The impact force on this turret is also quite high when compared to most other turrets:

guass_impact_force.png?width=500&height=

Something to note about the impact force of this turret is that most of the impact force comes from the explosion caused by a projectile of this turret hitting an obstacle. There is also minimal recoil, which makes it suitable for shooting repetitively (such as with a Viking overdrive).

Another part about this turret that is slightly different from other turrets is its rotation speed:

guass_rotation_speed.png?width=500&heigh

It has the second slowest rotation speed among turrets in this game, only faster than Vulcan.

What helps this turret stand out as opposed to other turrets?

This turret combines many of the active elements of several other turrets and only has a few negative parts about it. This turret isn’t necessarily the best if you are trying to get kills as it does enough damage to lower an enemy to low health, and a fellow teammate will likely snatch the kill before you can reload. This turret is an excellent edition for those who prefer long-range combat, as it has a destructive sniping mode, that can often not be noticeable by enemies. I don’t usually enjoy nor thrive at medium to long-range combat, but this turret has made me enjoy this range of fighting. Another piece of knowledge about this turret is that since it is new, very few people have protection against this turret, so it can be strong if you have a few upgrades on it. I would strongly suggest buying this turret if you love medium to long-range combat, and it can even be enjoyable and rewarding for those who don’t.

Conclusion

This turret has both characteristics that stand out from other turrets, as well as some mechanics that are familiar to players from one or a series of other turrets (such as Thunder and Striker). This turret provides a high amount of damage for the user, though this sometimes is not enough damage to kill hulls with higher protection levels (Dictator, Titan, Mammoth). This turret works in a team parkour setting, as the sniping mode impact force can be used advantageously, though the level of impact force in the quick shot mode is not ideal for parkour, especially One Man Parkour. I would only recommend using this turret in a team parkour setting, and one that you can take advantage of the impact force in sniping mode. When it comes to using this turret effectively in Matchmaking battles, I would suggest using this turret in a more open map (the splash damage isn't the best in close-quarters combat), that isn't ridiculously long in length (such as Massacre or Magistral).  When using this turret, it is important to know that you will often not do enough damage per shot to kill someone, even when in sniping mode, especially against the toughest of hulls. To help try to fix this problem, you could possibly use this turret with Hornet, as the Hornet overdrive makes the turret do more damage, by not taking into effect the opposing tank's supplies and protections against this turret. This turret takes a bit of getting used to, but if you are good at using Striker effectively, you will have a head start towards learning to use this turret.

All in all, this turret is definitely fun to use, though it often doesn't do enough damage to kill enemies. If you are a quick learner, and can efficiently learn how to use this turret to its full potential, you will realize that this turret is definitely unique, but also useful. It might take a bit of getting used to, but in the end it will sure be worth it. When I started using this turret, I was pretty bad at it (especially because I don't like Striker, and I am used to using turrets, like Firebird, for close-range combat), but after I have been using this turret for about a month, I now almost always get a high placement in Matchmaking battles when using this turret, and I have developed many different parkour tricks that effectively use the sniping mode impact force.

Thank you for reading through this guide, and I hope you are motivated to buy this turret, just like I was! :)

Edits since posting this topic sometime around June 10th:

1. Posted actual images, not just links to view pictures off of Imgur

2. Created an official conclusion to this piece (including a re-cap of my history with this turret since posting this article)

3. Minor visual changes to the font, alignment, etc.

Before anything else, apologizes from the AWS moderators for having taken so long to publish this! Nonetheless, your piece is well written and makes a good contribution the small collection of articles for Gauss. I found your more personal and engaging writing style to be quite interesting, although there were a few small things I did notice:

  • Awkward phrases: These aren't the biggest problem that can be found in an article, but there were phrases such as "strong elements [of Gauss]," "snatch up a kill" and "recoil on the user." These aren't terribly problematic but are still likely to take away from your writing. The easiest way to pick these mistakes out is to simply re-read your article.
  • Images: I apologize for listing this here as you didn't know it, but I'll just explain how these can be added. You can upload your images here, and then take the "bb code for forum full" and paste it in the forum to have it show up as an image.
  • Conclusion: I'm unsure if the last sentence is your conclusion, however a slightly more conclusion to reinforce what you have said is ideal. It doesn't need much, it can be fairly simple but it can make a difference

Also, Welcome to the AWS!

Great article! I would have certainly bought Gauss after reading this, but I don't have enough crystals...

However, the pictures I'd recommend you to use postimage.org

Goodluck for future articles :)

Thanks for finally posting this topic. I almost lost all hope that it would ever be uploaded.

I will try to work on the awkward phrases, and the conclusion, and I will put the actual images in there (if I can get it to work)  ;)

Thanks for the welcome to the AWS even though this is my second article in the Amateur Writing section  :)

Glad you enjoyed it! I will try to resolve the image problem, and thanks for your luck (it is greatly appreciated and needed)

Great work!  Though I am procrastinating working hard on a similar article, I like the unique way you described gauss.  In my opinion, though, this is more of a small review than a guide, though it is nonetheless very descriptive and helpful to readers.  However, there were some things that slightly stood out to me: the alignment of the text and the fact that you put paragraph intros.   Center looks a little odd, but it works.  Also, if you were to say it was an intro, it would be better to not write anything or write something related, because right now it looks like an FAQ page as opposed to a guide. You might want to consider adding the second paragraph into your intro - intros into an article are often much shorter.  All in all, it was an amazing article.

Thanks for your advice! I haven't really written a guide before, so yeah, there are quite a few flaws, but your advice will help me to improve.

The paragraph intros (I assume you meant the orange words describing sections), those were added by the moderators :(

Welcome to the AWS bud. I totally feel your introduction, I was online when Gauss was released and only realized it when I went into my garage to switch turrets during an mm battle!

No problems, I only wrote this article because it was just another boring summer break day for me, anyways.
