~Chapter 2~

Suddenly, I felt some feathers in my beak. I opened my eyes slowly, not believing what had just happened. There they were, my brother’s bright red feathers holding me up. A few of my own feathers were folded and I lost a lot of feathers in the dive. Bright red feathers were swirling beside me. It would've looked pretty if I didn’t know they were mine, or that they marked my complete failure in flying.

“What happened?” I asked. We were still high up in the sky and we were falling, little by little.

“I caught you when you were falling. I thought I could hold you up and fly, but I guess I can’t fly with a chick on my back yet. The only thing I can carry on my back are a few worms... well, if anyone somehow puts some there,” he responded, too focused on keeping us aloft, but still adding humor into his answer. I tried lifting my weight so it would be easier for Stripes to carry me.

“Mom! We kinda need some help here, so could you come down to get us?” I asked, trying to help my brother more by calling Mom. She would be strong enough to fly with me... hopefully.

When Mom came to help us my heart filled with joy. She flew out of the nest with a gracefulness that even Rose couldn't compete with.

“Stripes, go get some prey! We’ll need it for Lucky to recover. Lucky, don’t panic. Try to slow your fall by flapping your wings,” Mom commanded so calmly, anyone would think nothing was happening.

I flapped my wings, forcing them to move, but they were aching so much I stopped.

“Hold on!” Mom shouted. I flopped on her, knocking her down a little, but she regained balance quickly.

Mom quickly flew me back up to the nest, with me digging my beak in her feathers. They were so comfortable and snug. She laid me on the most comfortable place in the nest, right where I had just organized the feathers. They were soft and comfortable, and I huddled down.

“Will I be alright?” I asked Mom.

“You will. Just be normal,” She comforted me.

Soon, my brother flew in with two worms in his beak. He gave one to me and one to Mom.

“That was fast!” I chirped, surprised.

“I thought you’d want a snack after flying with a little chick on your back,” he explained. He went to talk with Rose about how he caught me when I was falling.

“I was searching for worms, when I heard Lucky falling. I thought, Lucky is falling! Why isn’t anyone getting him?" Stripes spread out his wings to gesture how he had felt. "Then, I realized that there weren’t any other birds that could see him. I knew I didn’t have the strength to hold him up, so I panicked. I figured that I was the only one that would reach him in time, so I...” Soon, his never-ending chirps grew hackneyed, and I dozed off.

I rested for a few days to regrow all the feathers I lost from the fall. All I really did was eat, talk, and rest. Sometimes I would smooth out the folded feathers, but that grew mundane quickly.

A few days later, I was healthy enough to try flying again, or so I thought. This time, Mom gave me tips about how to fly before I went, flap a little, pause and flap again. That way, I could save my energy and glide. Now that I knew that, I wanted to do it myself without anyone watching. I went out to the rim at midnight.

“Wow,” I said, looking at the night sky. It was beautiful. The moon was round and bright, shining down on me, as if it were encouraging me to fly. I soaked in all of the moonlight, and I felt as if I could take on anything.

I pushed off the rim of the nest and started to fly as best as I could. My wings pushed through the air, trying to keep my whole body in the air. I was still falling little by little, but I could push myself up again. I felt comfortable flying with the air under my wings, supporting me.

“Meow,” I heard a cat. I looked down. There was an orange tabby cat with clear, bright yellow eyes, pointed straight at me.

I panicked. What if I fell and the cat ate me? I pushed that thought away. I wouldn’t fall that easily, now that I had kind of got the hang of it. Still, I curved around back to my nest, flapping my wings hurriedly this time.

“You’re not going to eat me that easily!” I chirped at the cat. I didn’t notice it, but there was a tree branch ahead of me. I crashed into it and plummeted down toward the ground, again. This time, my brother and Mom were asleep. No one was here to get me. I shot out my wings, hoping to catch a drift in the night sky, but it seemed as if everything in nature had abandoned me. I plummeted down, the ground rushing toward me, just like last time. I don’t think it is normal for a bird to fall like this, not that falling is normal for a bird. And this was the second time I’d fallen in a couple of days. I felt myself getting closer to the cat… Maybe it was already opening its mouth so it could eat me… I squeezed my eyes shut, and curled into myself protectively, hoping the cat would finish its job quickly.

Article Approved.

Great piece. Very advanced for a fifth grader, I must say  . You have also managed to come up with fantastic cliff hangers in parts one and two!

Edits:

  • Small grammar/word changes to improve flow
  • Nothing much

N.B. Sorry for the late reply, most of the reporter team has been on holiday, so AWS approving has been on hold for a bit.

Kaisdf, they aren't exactly fantastic cliffhangers because they're literally the same event, just at different times.  And thanks. To be honest, I've had my friends read it over and revise it over the years, plus I did some editing myself before posting

Hippin in Hawaii, nice pun!

Pythor, thanks!
