Chapter One: The First Battles

With a stroke of luck, the two of us were at Percy’s house, registering for a game together. It was difficult to hang out with Percy alone, once he had acclimated to the rest of my friends from third grade, he hardly spent time with our fourth grade friends. But finally, we were enjoying some time together, ready to start our journey as best buddies in this new game.

As we went on to the registration page, we started thinking of nicknames. As always, being the secretive one, I called myself Random while Percy went with something along the lines of Anonymous11. Joining our first battle, we tried to familiarize ourselves with the foreign game. Both of us succumbed to a stronger player with a tall hull, a Dictator with Smoky, and learned to face the hectic events of the game.

Clicking on the notification at the top (“buy an item in the garage!”) I exited the scene, eager to make my first purchase. Quickly, I bought a Wasp, as my friend had advised me. I would have bought Hornet, his favorite hull, but it was unavailable at my rank. Since he had urged us to play this game in the first place, he also imparted several other pieces of advice unto me prior to registration: to buy Railgun, not to micro-upgrade, and so on. However, when I saw that the upgrade only cost ten out of my thousand crystals, I quickly chose otherwise.

Making my way back to the battle, I strived for success, but it was quite limited. Though my fingers were quite nimble, making the correct decisions, many overpowered turrets waged war upon me, and I was blasted three times with an elusive missile. Percy was faring no better, as a pair of dominating Twins ruthlessly destroyed him, running rings around most of our teammates. In the end, it was a horrific loss, and I had only gained a small handful of crystals and experience, as well as two stars. Most weren’t as lucky: half the team hadn’t even managed to cobble together enough score for a star.

Taking a quick break to buy a Firebird and upgrade my equipment, I waited for Percy to decide on a game mode. We only had two choices: Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, so he chose the team option. This time, we ended up on opposite teams, Percy on Blue and I on Red. Even though we were separated, it was the same as before, the higher-ranked players decided the outcome. Again, I ended up losing, while Percy basked in the glory of Sergeants and Corporals, some of whom also owned a futuristic turret firing lightning, which I would later learn was called Gauss. Hopes of winning the match were bleak, until I discovered the overdrive.

While I surged forward from one side of the map (I believe it was called Aleksandrovsk), I almost met my fate. Two Firebirds, a Thunder, and a Twins rushed towards me, together fighting for a piece of me. Knowing my mistake, I retreated, but fell right off and flipped upside down, landing on the side of the ramp like a soggy pancake tossed onto a plate. Hopes of surviving were dismal; I pressed X and Z rapidly, trying to elicit a response, but instead, I missed and hit the Shift button. Not knowing what had happened, I barely saw the outline of a bomb counting down as I turned into a pile of rusted metal.

Then, it happened.

It was like an atomic bombing had occured, right on this ground. Right then and there, half the Blue team was blasted into the sky, awarding me with sixty points and four more kills.

Our team had lost, but in another sense, I had also won.

Article Approved.

Wow, you really capture the mindset of someone new to the game (so well one might almost think you were a nub yourself :P ). Kudos though, the tone and style fits the piece well.

You do need to work on your spacing between sentences. After a full stop, the norm is a single space, some people use a double space. It doesn't matter as long as you're consistent - which you aren't. Some one space, some two, some even three - make up your mind and stick to it  :)

Edits:

  • The past tense of strive is strived, not strove]
  • Spacing between sentences made uniform at one space.

N.B. Sorry for the late approval, most of the reporter team has been on holiday, so AWS approving has been on hold for a bit.

good cos it is latin :D

Deus ex machina is a plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem in a story is suddenly and abruptly resolved by an unexpected and seemingly unlikely occurrence, typically so much as to seem contrived. Wikipedia

According to kaisdf you wrote strove, but he edited it to strived. I was just correcting his edit.

okeity.  I don't remember lol.  welp it doesn't matter that much.  it's just one word out of a small series that i'll probably give up halfway since i am more into metaphorical stories now.

Nope, strove is correct. Strived is sometimes written but is technically NOT correct.

You are correct, my mistake; strove > strived.
