Mars Race

Yes, the race is in the works and will be a reality. What are your thoughts on the Mars Race?

The Mars One program, a Dutch organization, plans to send 24 people with a one way ticket to Mars in 2032 (NASA's timeline) to set the stage for colonization, though this group is not specifically meant to populate (of course this bound to happen anyway). They have whittled down the applicants to 100 people. The 24 chosen will be sequestered for a decade before leaving to learn how to survive. They will learn how to grow food, repair technology and medical training. Doctors and other critical professionals have contacted other organizations to be considered.

Bowing has already put their hat in the ring to set up shop on Mars while a few transportation manufacturers are seriously considering it.

Elon Musk is planning to launch in 2024 with a 2 man crew to set up fuel plants using methane from Mars atmosphere and water. Other projects are planned including building colony pods for colonization.

Race participants are United States, Russia and China.

What are your feelings?

Will you encourage your children and grandchildren to participate in colonization, plan a career that will insure a seat in the rocket?

Definitely a step forward for the human race from the ethical point of view, and the budget cut definitely suits these three countries because all their basic sectors already have ample funding and staffing. I'd definitely encourage my children(if some half hearted low esteemed lady decides to look at me for 5 seconds without laughing) but I'm pretty sure that even a lifetime worth of savings wouldn't put them in space. Basically in a nutshell, I'm the guy who offers thoughts and prayers on Facebook without doing much effort.

hope this happens in my lime line.

It's only 13 years away. I wish I could go, but they don't want us "old farts" up there.

Don't want to be a wet blanket, but space travel doesn't appeal to me... Like at all

You're not a wet blanket, space travel isn't for everyone. Just like the Pioneers who went out West for the gold rush and the opportunists followed. I was a hard, hectic journey into the unknown. Not everyone was interested, not everyone wanted to take that chance. But it still got populated and grew.

Even though you don't have the interest, would you encourage today's youth to at least consider it?

I have a mild interest in Legos. I never owned any, that kind of stuff was for the rich, not for the needy. A friend of mine had an amazing set that I wanted to play with, but he was bored with them and wanted to do other things. I should have asked him if he wanted to donate them to a good cause....ME. I was brought up not to "covet thy neighbors goods." We were poor, so that was an essential lesson. I thought asking him for his Lego collection would be "coveting."

I fully understand coming from a family of 8 kids , we know how tight things can be for parents. also having 3 of mine own and glad there not heavy into name brand clothing when they were young was a bonus.. for me as my kids grew up they only wanted Lego and asked for it for Birthdays. now we buy it either on line or  in garage sales which is cheapest by far. lots of people now give it away cause there sick of stepping on it.. also in the Lego club is now opened and we can chat more there.. http://en.tankiforum.com/index.php?showtopic=381578

First of all... It'll take close to a full year to reach Mars from Earth depending on the launch site. Whoever would volunteer to spend that amount of time cooped up in a shuttle is out of their minds... even if they become a household name.

I recently read another article that indicated the possibility have having a layover station on the moon and continuing from there. It has been discussed, but no concrete plans have been made. It also mentioned the possibility of launching a satellite similar to the Space Station, but only bigger. The Shuttle would have to be bigger than the ones we have seen thus far to accommodate the crews and equipment they would need to get started. I haven't found much on transportation, as yet, but I'm sure NASA and private companies are working on it.

so nasa after 50 years realized they still have ppl to send to the moon...

and a private company is gonna have humans on Mars by then... if everything goes according to plan

Makes sense.

I can't tell if you are serious or being sarcastic. Anyway, it's NASA that's going to sending the Mars One group to Mars. The private companies are planning to get there earlier and start setting up so the Mars One crew has someplace to live and fuel for the ships. Both groups will have ships going back and forth for needed supplies.

A small colony on the Moon is still on the drawing board. The idea is to have the Moon as a way station for supplies so the ships won't have to make the long haul to Earth.

I thought spaceX was going to launch the BFR with humans in 2024...

Yes, they are, but they will be doing the preliminary set ups for colonization and getting refueling areas set up. The fuel they'll be using will be made of Methane from Mars atmosphere and water (I don't understand the water part). The Mars One group will be launched by NASA in 2032. By that time, the first crews should have living facilities ready for them.

I asked my Grandkids if they were going to encourage their kids (still quite young yet) to go into some aspect of the space flight program and told them about this Mars mission (I did some research myself).

My Grandson said that he has already tried to expose his kids to space exploration. They've been to the Kennedy Space Center and Museum and have seen a few launches in real life, as opposed to seeing them on TV. But neither child has shown any inclination towards anything yet. He said that if either of his kids starts showing some interest in space, then he will certainly nudge the child in that direction, but won't force the issue. His wife simply said "Whatever."

My Granddaughter is still on the fence. She said that if her kids went into space, she may never see them again, it'd be worse than joining the military and going to war. Having said that, I asked her if she would discourage them from joining the military. She said she would support them in whatever they choose, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I asked her husband. He said that he is having a tendency to agree with his wife. However, if they choose the military/space flight, then there isn't much he can do about it. He said that he wasn't going to encourage them down any path. Let them choose their own path and he will support them in their decision.
