What's new in HTML5

No. I hate lag. My PC does not lag. Even using the Flash version, I can manage to play very well, except some crashes on some maps. The HTML5 version of Tanki Online plays very smoothly, but still it needs improvements until the new HTML5 is 100% perfect.

Oh, I understand. But PING is the delay time between you and the server, thus higher PING = bigger lags (to put it simple).

Try disabling 'hardware acceleration' in Chrome.

The new version doesn't work in Firefox for now.

Yup, that worked in Chrome. But the game was very crude, low bitrate, low resolution, bad response time. Plus a brand new deal that when I hopped my tank off even a minor cliff, it exploded on impact. (New game version rule?)

While I was in there, I managed to drop all my Gold Boxes and catch most of them myself. But as far as actually enjoying playing in that mode... nope, not at all. Not even using the Space option, which I normally think is fun.

So I got out quickly, and then reset my Chrome defaults.

I think we're not supposed to play with 'hardware acceleration OFF' for now, but I think when they optimize it we'll be able to play without changing advanced settings.

Is there anything else new to come to HTML5? I just want some improvements. The improvements that I would like to get is a redesigned profile interface so that it makes it much easier to browse for paints. Right now, it takes a lot of useless scrolling right and left when browsing through you list of equipment. The most annoying are paints because paints keep accumulating as you earn more and more through containers.

Right now, the interface looks like this. It's time consuming to find the right paint to wear in such an annoying interface where you have to browser left and right with so many paints.

Old-interface.png

Even the new HTML5 paints interface is somewhat kind of cluttered when you want to find you own paints.

New-interface.png

The new HTML5 paints interface does not even show the current paint that I am wearing. That is so annoying. Instead, it only displays the first paint in the total list of available paints. By the way, why does the HTML5 version display paints that I don't actually have? It should only display the paints that I have in my garage.

It would be so much better if paints would be displayed with an icon on their side, (like with the Ratings Page), and also list the paints in order by the maximum number of experience points gained, from highest to lowest.

Top-down.png

Please re-design the paints interface in the new HTML5 version of Tanki Online for better scrolling and easy finding.

With such an interface, it would be much more convenient to find the paint you are looking for. Also, it would be very clever and ideal to add a search box so that you can browse your specific paints by name. Please add a paints search box for user friendly browsing of paints. This would be an excellent update to make for the new HTML5 garage interface.

In the next update to HTML5 TO I want to see the following:

1) customizable camera inertia levels with recommendations of what level works best for what turret and or hull.

2) custom controls.

3) being able to access missions while in battle.

4) alterations of yours and others being shown in battle.

5) indication that someone has the ball or flag like flashing and an indication that a point is about to be captured.

Have been playing on HTML5 for 3 days now exclusively.  Playing fullscreen at 2560x1440 on Xeon E5-2670, 16GB RAM, SSD, Radeon RX 460.  Getting 60fps with all settings enabled.  A couple lag spikes but otherwise no errors which is wonderful because I was getting error every 2 games with client though had 60fps.  I have had sound drop a couple times but it returned after about a minute.

General

  • Key mapping for alternate keys is required for more general adoption.  Allow configuration of mapping for all different screens with as many hooks as possible.
  • Map number keypad 1-6 and Enter to same normal keys by default.
  • Better use of available screen space for larger resolutions to avoid scrolling unnecessarily.
  • Using mouse wheel to scroll horizontally is odd behavior.

Game Play

  • Camera still needs some work.  Camera should always be in line with turret direction using keyboard and it lags slightly behind.
  • Finding it difficult to use long range weapons accurately because of camera and apparently higher impact force.
  • Very difficult to get to garage to change equipment after killed without automatically respawning.  Not enough time is given to Pause (P) and go to Garage (G).
  • Garage (G) hotkey should be available in battle rather than having to open Pause (P) menu.
  • Impact force received seems much greater in HTML5 than in Flash.
  • When tanks pushing together more likely to see tanks go through or on top/under eachother in HTML5 than in Flash.
  • After battle, add L - Leave hotkey
  • After battle, allow to go directly to garage and then go N - Next.
  • Battle summary does not list clan tags and no link to profile site.
  • CP mode can't see status of points on map.
  • Mammoth overdrive seems slower to display in HTML5 vs flash and harder to react to.
  • Allow opening containers in battle.
  • Allow way to see alterations/drones/protections on tank.  R key does nothing in HTML5.

Memory

  • Game continues to increase memory usage as played which likely means there is a memory leak.
  • Have had get as high as 6GB of memory being used by Chrome when game is only tab and minimal loaded plugins.

Landing screen

  • Suggest allowing disabling of current tank animation (constantly using 10-15% of GPU on this)
  • More hotkeys to allow navigation and make configurable:
    • H - Home / Landing screen
    • G - Garage
    • M - Missions
    • C - Containers
    • S - Shop
    • D - Disband Group
    • A - Add Group Member
    • F - Friends
    • P - Play

  • Rather than have Gear icon to drill down to game type to play, make game type options available on this screen
  • Integration with current war (https://tankionline.com/pages/tank-war/) like is done for challenges

Battle List

  • Bad use of space.  No need to have left-right scrolling.  Use blank space better or adjust button sizes.

Battle List / List

  • Show map name in list.

Garage

  • Bad use of space.  No need to have left-right scrolling for turret/hull/drone/protection/supplies.  Use blank space better or adjust button sizes.
  • Double mouse click does not work to equip alterations, skins, paint colors.
  • When selecting a paint, the selected paint is scrolled off screen.
  • Paints not ordered except by owned/not owned.
  • Default paint filter should show most recently used paints.
  • On my screen size, would be great to configure everything in one screen: turret/hull/drone/protection

Friend List

  • Clan Tags not visible
  • Not ordered except by online/offline
  • Wasted screen space to left and right
  • Suggest add filters and sorting capabilities (name, clan, online/offline, date last played)

Battle Group

  • Make more clear how to leave or disband group.  Odd to click your name.
  • Show clan tag, protections, drone.

Excellent feedback, this is what we like to see, definitely will be passed on to devs.

Some pointers:

Key mapping for alternate keys is required for more general adoption.  Allow configuration of mapping for all different screens with as many hooks as possible.

This is currently being worked on.

Camera still needs some work.  Camera should always be in line with turret direction using keyboard and it lags slightly behind.

Not sure if you played during the first couple of days of HTML5. It had a camera that followed the turret precisely without any inertia, some players liked it many said it made them feel dizzy.

As a result the camera was updated to how it is now and some players like it others saying its too slow to respond, few players complaining about dizziness however.

I think the best solution would be a camera inertia adjustment slider in settings.

Very difficult to get to garage to change equipment after killed without automatically respawning.  Not enough time is given to Pause (P) and go to Garage (G).

I think this is probably intentional, regardless of how quickly you mash 'PG' you will respawn, I think thats a good thing since it encourages players to spend less time in the garage which is important in 7 minute battles.

Garage (G) hotkey should be available in battle rather than having to open Pause (P) menu.

IMO this was terrible in Flash because I would keep hitting 'G' instead of 'F' when I needed to drop a flag. Once you get in to the habit; mashing 'PG' is equally fast.

Game continues to increase memory usage as played which likely means there is a memory leak.  Have had get as high as 6GB of memory being used by Chrome when game is only tab and minimal loaded plugins.

Not sure how that compares with other HTML5 games but Chrome is always a bit of a memory hog, using my non-existent knowledge of how these things work I would think that as you drive around the map rendering higher res textures those would get saved to memory thus making using more RAM/VRAM as the game goes on.

If you mean VRAM, apparently Flash handled anything above 700mb of VRAM poorly so it was avoided, I cannot imagine the HTML5 version uses 6GB so my suspicion is that Chrome is the culprit. Just making slightly educated guesses here.

Rather than have Gear icon to drill down to game type to play, make game type options available on this screen

Probably part of developers efforts to have a smaller barrier to entry for new players making player retention better, this probably wont change.

Bad use of space.  No need to have left-right scrolling.  Use blank space better or adjust button sizes.

I've got no side scrolling on my 2560x1440 battle list, not sure whats happening here. Other players have also reported similar scaling issues.

Just want to be clear, overall I am extremely impressed with the HTML5 version of the game, and I have been working in web app development for almost 20 years.  It is pretty amazing that they have been able to faithfully recreate the game and redesign the UI.

I hope as they get past the functional differences they will make the UI more accommodating to people with high resolution.  There is also a lot of froufrou that was interesting to see once but just clutters the UI for experienced players.

I think this is probably intentional, regardless of how quickly you mash 'PG' you will respawn, I think thats a good thing since it encourages players to spend less time in the garage which is important in 7 minute battles.

I don't think you should be penalized with a self-destruction for changing equipment in the time between dying and respawning.  In flash, you have until your tank visually respawns.  In HTML5 you have to hit Pause before the camera starts to move to your new spawn location.  I'm pretty damn quick on a keyboard and I can Pause only about 20% of time.  That's frustrating because then you either have to cancel your planned change or make the change and be out of the game for another 10 seconds as you go through self-destruct timer and another respawn.

We buy all these different items to be effective in a variety of situations.  A significant part of being a good player is having a good garage and knowing what to use when.  Changing equipment should be encouraged and able to be done quickly.   I find myself spending significantly more time in garage in this version than old.  Of course, a large part of that is years of familiarity with old UI (which was worse than this one).

If I were designing an in-battle equipment change function, I wouldn't use the same UI as lobby garage.  I would provide a quick change screen where you could choose turret+alt, hull, modules, and drones.  Would also likely change behavior such that changing equipment takes effect the next time you spawn rather than causing a self-destruction.  Then user can choose whether to self-destruct or not.

I've got no side scrolling on my 2560x1440 battle list, not sure whats happening here. Other players have also reported similar scaling issues.

Side scrolling shows when picking MM battle type if not full screen and there is unused blank space above and below.  When you have to show instructions (bottom right) to use mouse wheel to scroll to other options you know it is not intuitive.  They probably got feedback it was not intuitive and rather than changing behavior added instructions.

It also exists in full screen in garage when selecting turret, module, and drone.  Maybe show up for hulls too.

Its a coincidence that this post was released on the same date as Twiggy's birthday. She is now 70 years old and still going strong.

=================================================================================================================

What shall the next HTML5 updates bring? I hope that the interface shall be improved, and all bugs fixed. In general, I am so happy that maps like Tribute and others don't crash anymore with the HTML5 version.

Question:

How long will the Flash version of Tanki Online remain before being phased out?

Just tried the new camera, its closer to the Flash version though it feels as though there is too much overshoot especially if turning a fast turret and steering your tank at the same time, the camera is near 45 degrees off at some points.

I had already gotten used to the HTML5 camera pre-update but there were other players complaining about it being too 'jerky', it would be nice to see some adjustment possible in settings similar to the 'Mouse Sensitivity' slider.

Something like this:

The flash version will remain till they fix all HTML5 issues and release the final version of it. once they do it, the flash version will be removed and the HTML5 will be the default version.

Great to hear that. I am glad that developers will fix everything for the HTML5 version of Tanki Online.

Question:

1. When the Flash version of Tanki Online is ready to be removed, will it be removed all at once or will it be slowly dismantled?

It was previously mentioned that players would be slowly transferred over to HTML5 until Flash has  no players left.
