Is Tanki Online really NOT fun?

A lot is going on in these trying times which is a real shame for some people. But thankfully they're out there somewhere away from us and here we are with Tanki, the perfect means to kill time and relieve the mounting depression, losing ourselves in the world of tracks and turrets.

 

Unfortunately, there's a catch every time I log back in and wait through the interminable queue times: Tanki just isn't very fun anymore. It's not the game I used to spend hours a week grinding on and here are a few reasons why.

 

 

The Problem

There isn't just one problem that's ruined gameplay; it's a conglomeration of many things. The current missions favour regular players much more than the occasional weekend player like me. Regular players get stacked with crystals and supplies that I could never acquire. This has turned gameplay very supply-dependent even at lower ranks. In the past, games were decided more on skill and, to some degree, modifications, but now they're a contest of which team has the heavier supply and drone users. So, if you're an average player trying your best to make a difference, but don't have the resources needed, you're going to end up frustrated.

The new matchmaking also discourages playing well. If matchmaking catches a Brigadier dominating, it's going to bump him up to higher ranks where he'll flounder. Players are punished for out-performing their peers.

Now, this can be helpful. We don't want buyers curb-stomping our sorry un-drugged tank, but somehow it's different if you're doing well because of skill and possibly wise spending choices rather than pressing buttons and stat-checking all opposition out of the game.

All this to say, if you're a brigadier with M3s (or Mk7s idc) and you're expecting to consistently make a difference on your team, you'll be very disappointed. 

 

So yeah, that's the vibe.

 

Anyways, if you're a mid-high ranker looking to get back into the swing of things during quarantine, you might have to switch things up a bit to still really enjoy yourself. And that's why I'm writing this not just so I could rant a bit about the rapidly deteriorating state of the game that honestly is pretty frustrating to a casual gamer

 

 

The Solutions

 

Don't take games too seriously

People who tryhard and go ham every game are bound to be disappointed. You can't dominate every battle in this game especially with matchmaking the way it is. Sometimes you'll lose games. In the past for me, the struggle of trying my best in a battle and still underwhelming was enough to take me off Tanki for the rest of the day and I think that's common for a lot of people. People take this way too seriously and get tilted over unfair games (only if the unfairness is against their teams though I should add). Instead, you should just cruise your way through battles you can't win and stop trying. Stop focusing on the gamemode and maybe just focus on getting kills. Once you let go of your competitive spirit, you can enjoy a leisurely battle with no stakes. Then, when you get back into a battle where you can make a difference, go ham.

 

Ignore objectives

No, I don't mean every game, but some battles it's a nice change to play for kills. When you charge into the enemy base repeatedly in CTF and die every time it's not fun, but if you snipe the defenders and rack up kills from behind a wall, that's fun. This goes hand-in-hand with the above point as well. You might lose some games playing like this, but you won't care because you'll actually be enjoying yourself.

 

Play on an alt

You'll always be better than the players around you. You can always make a difference. There isn't as much drugging. Battles are lower stakes. You don't have to deal with pretentious high-rankers. There's a lot to be said for starting an alt and playing on it consistently. 

 

 

So yeah, honestly the more I think about it, the more I conclude that it's psychological. If you take Tanki as a game to chill in then you'll have a good time, but the moment you start basing your happiness on the results you obtain in-game, the more fed up you'll be.

It is definitely an interesting argument which highlights the reasons why most tankers don't find the game enjoying anymore as well as it proposes ways by which we can enjoy the game. No grammatical mistakes found.

I am not a reporter yet, just a candidate. There is nothing stopping me, I am all the way up.

What I find interesting now is that this whole "Tanki isn't fun anymore" way of thinking is becoming more and more prevalent, as opposed to about 5 years ago. If you guys remember the notorious "drugs" battle we had back then, that was a voice we seldom heard. But now, the problems have grown within the different branches of the game. I've spoken about the crate system before in another thread, and some of the other problems that I personally have noticed since I started playing Tanki again...if you want to take a look at what I said, look here then (it's a bit long, so be prepared). There are some other things that have been brough to my attention since then, I've yet to add them. I may create a thread myself centered around the issue.
