Holiday Goldbox Drop Effect

Recommended Posts

Hi folks;

When Tanki has holiday maps, most of the players there are in the map just to catch goldboxes. This changes the whole dynamic of goldboxes. Normally, goldboxes are contested by 5 or 6 random players in the map, none of them have their OD fully charged, and most of them just barely get there at the last second. However, by a holiday map, you have about 10 players contesting a goldbox. Several of them will jump from strategic locations. Others take up sniping positions in corners to attack those competing for the goldbax. Most players were saving their overdrives for this moment, and most of them have supplies equipped. This just leaves to mess of sorts, where close ranged overdrives (mammoth, wasp, and HUNTER) usually prevail. This eliminates all timing, maneuverability, and flying leaps that occur by a goldbox drop in a standard battle.

Therefore I suggest a new goldbox drop effect for holidays. Maybe this should replace all goldbox drops in holiday maps, or maybe only some of them. But I think there should be multiple (3-4) gold box drops simultaneously, and the player that catches one first gets the 100 crystals, and the other goldboxes are worth 25 crystals. This will make goldbox drops come down to leaping through the air to catch it. Also, being on the drop site should increase the rate of the drop, making you catch it before the other goldboxes, however, this puts you at risk of enemy fire. Players should be notified of this with a message like “you snooze, you lose” to those who catch the other goldboxes. It is not intended as an April Fool’s joke.

Thank you effort in reading this, please leave your thoughts down below.

Concept itself is interesting, but the logic is flawed. With these gold box events, especially one we've just had, there are so many golds that it's common to have 2-3 dropping at the same time. Combine that with the possibility of a gold appearing in some obscure locations, and you end up with very few players contesting for some of the boxes.

As for overdrives, I think they're part of the fun. Over the past few days I've seen every single hull using its abilities (OD, speed, size, weight) to effectively catch golds, and while some may be better than others, overall it was pretty balanced. And Gubakha was a pretty good choice of map, since it was both small and multi-levelled, which allows heavy hulls to get to the drop location fast enough, but also gives light hulls an opportunity to do some tricks in order to gain an advantage.

I hear your argument, and I have seen several boxes land within several seconds, but it only happens every 3 or 4 battles, and the vast majority of gold boxes are caught without much skill. I agree with you that this map was a great holiday map, and more balanced than most holiday maps. But there are plenty of holiday maps that can use such a feature, and it would certainly add more skill, even if some skill is already being used.

BTW this is my 10th suggestion since I ranked up to WO1. (now at WO3)
