Darkness. [Part 5]

In retrospect, I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe I was hoping it would turn into some sort of action movie, where I leap in the air, slice his neck and kill him in one swift move, and run out of the temple with Ethan and me unscathed. Maybe the absurdity of this all had finally gotten to me. Whatever the reason was, I decided to charge the mysterious shadow giant. I ran up, jumped, and managed to give him an insignificant splinter in his ankle. He was bigger than we thought. I nearly surrendered right at that moment, but then I realized two things -- since he's so big, he's going to be quite slow. That's a plus, I guess. I didn't know what I would do with this information. However, the second thing I realized is that I also had the Shadow powers. So I decided to use both of those to my advantage. I ran over to where Ethan was; I only said two words.

"Distract him."

With the message sent to Ethan, I sneaked to the side and formulated an amass of shadow people. I gave each of them a mask to cover their faces, and then I put one on myself. Now I was indistinguishable from the rest of my army.

Here's where I apparently learned nothing. I decided to charge again at Mr. Lord-Of-The-Darkness. I thought I was pretty far away, and to be fair, I was, but it turns out I wasn't out of eyesight. The clones and I flew up and started attacking him from all angles, and for a moment I thought it was going to work. Then the next thing I remember was picking myself up from the ground, with Ethan in the same situation right next to me. The ground started to shake, and I thought that maybe, just maybe, an earthquake is happening and a piece of temple roof would crush the head of whoever was subjecting us to torture. But I knew it wasn't an earthquake. It was laughter.

"You have fought bravely, and I must give credit where credit is due. Like I said earlier, you have lasted longer than most would. You have gone through most of the trials. I wanted you to survive, I wanted you to prosper. I gave you a choice.

"But alas, you chose to fight me. I complimented you, and what did that give you? Arrogance. You thought you could strike me down, but you failed to realize -- I am not just what or who I show. I am everywhere and everything that has helped you and hurt you. You cannot hide from me, you cannot fight me, and you cannot defeat me."

I heard what he said, but I didn't comprehend it -- I was to busy thinking about if my new theory was right.

If he's the Lord of the Shadows or whatever, can I control him since I can control the Shadows?

I decided to try this out. I closed my eyes and concentrated more than I have in my life. At this point, I didn't care if I died, if Ethan died, or if nobody died. I just wanted to see if this works. I heard silence, then a slow rumble, which slowly grew louder. I heard the Shadow Lord start to command me to stop, or to face death of all. None of that mattered. He started to sound more and more worried, and his voice became more and more human until the rumbling stopped and a rush of cold air flew over me.

I opened my eyes and I was back in the woods that I started in. I look next to me, Ethan was unconscious. I was checking if he was okay when I heard coughing. I looked over and saw a man. He was wearing all black, was extremely pale, skinny, and tall. I ran over to him, pointed my sword at him, and demanded to know his name.

"Y-you chose wrong..." he said, "even if you strike me down, you have done what I needed. You have started the Attack."

He stared me right in the eyes, which were completely black, but had a sort of glow to them. At that moment, I snapped. I brought my sword down on his chest, and he was soon covered in shadows. When the shadows dissipated, he was gone.

I sat down and thought about what I had just done.

I did it! I won! It's over! Now Ethan and I can continue living our normal lives, and we can forget about this moment.

Mid-process of trying to wake Ethan, I realized something. The woods were completely silent, which is unusual even in the middle of the night. Then, out of nowhere, I heard another scream. I realized it wasn't me or Ethan, as we were both right here.

It was James, the person who arranged this birthday party and started this all.

He's in trouble.

And it's my fault.

I charged out of the woods and into the never-ending screams.

Approved.

Amazing story! I had been waiting for another chapter of this series for a short while, and I can surely say it was worth the wait. I'm impressed with the way your storywriting is: descriptive, suspenseful, and adventurous. I can't wait for another story. Keep it up!

Edits:

Spoiler
  • A few minor grammar mistakes, mostly commas. Remember that you don't need to place a comma before every 'and'. Ex. I ate cupcakes and drank apple cider at my church's youth group gathering. But when connecting two independent clauses, remember to do so. Ex. We ate cupcakes while chatting nonchalantly for an hour, and the adults started complaining about us kids being lazy gluttons.
