MU10 vs next level MU1

Maybe it's just my imagination, but I consistently find that when I am fully MUed MU9 or MU10, I seem to be more deadly than after I claim my next upgrade to MU1 of the next higher level.  Whatever equipment it is always seems less effective than my lower rated higher MUed equipment.  Once I get to MU2 it starts to seem about as effective as the old MU10 and MU3 usually starts to see a bit of an improvement.  MU4 and up are always more effective.

Anyone else experience this or get this impression?  I realize that each step up is supposed to increase the deadliness of your equipment so an Mk3-MU10 is technically less effective than an Mk4-MU2...but in practice, it never seems that way.

Are you upgrading 1-2-3 after you rank up?  Playing higher-ranked players?

no, not really...sometimes, but many times it is within the same rank so the competition shouldn't be any greater.  It could be that I just expect the equipment to do too much for me after it goes to the next level...it could very well be my imagination, but it has happened many times now and seems like it may be a real effect.
