What does the matchmaking system do to prevent 4v8 matches?

 Share

Question

I just played like this:

Spoiler

Screen-Shot-2020-06-15-at-1-31-04-PM.png

For a solid 3 minutes. Needless to say, our team was rather unsuccessful, even though the four of us were pretty cooperative and reasonably skilled.

I can understand someone joining, seeing a lopsided match, and leaving, but that's not what happened. During that 3 minutes, not a single person was added to our team. The only reason I didn't leave is because I didn't want to stick my team in a 3v8.

So my question is (and I am genuinely curious; I don't want to just complain): What does the MM system do to minimize this sort of thing happening, and how can we as players help it do a better job?

I would have thought the answer would be "it adds more people to balance the teams," but considering prolonged 5v8 or 6v8 matches are not all that uncommon, this clearly isn't always the case.

This is from my own experience with Matchmaking ever since it's official release, we don't have accurate stats provided on how exactly it works, but from what I have experienced when teams go unbalanced like this is either because of players leaving the battle, and different times of the day plays a part as well, for example starting at 17:00 UTC the matchmaking system is pretty fast, players with closer ranks to each other put together (maybe one-two occurrences during the day) 23:30 UTC things begin to slow down and then that's when I notice some teams going unbalanced, either their ranks are a bit to low, they don't have strong enough equipment to keep playing and they leave, then other times nobody joins the match at all (however, I do rarely experience this) the match goes on for the next 3-4 minutes that feel like forever with half of your team not there possibly because the matchmaking system cannot find anybody to rank you with those players in your current match. These are of course, in my ranks, so I am not sure if it's different for the lower ranks, it could be. Also, again this is my own experience, not actual stats.

So to sum it up. Players leave the match for whatever reason (equipment, connection issues, loading errors), different times of the day play a part and when the hours are not so active, the battles begin to become more unbalanced because matchmaking can't find players that match your team and opponents strength.

Please report this issue on HTML5 Bug Reports so that it could be brought to the developers attention. Currently, there is no specific reason in our knowledge as to why it happens. I can understand the frustration as I, myself have experience this problem numerous times. Though for me the teams balance gradually as the battle progresses.

Well, once i had an even better battle: we were 3v8, and one of our team mebber was afking, so basically 2v8. And it lasted for 3 minutes
