Does the HTML 5 client require java to run or not?

Hello! 

The HTML5 requires 'Java Script' to run but not 'Java'. 

The HTML5 client has everything it needs to run in the box
as for on a browser you need Javascript, Java isn't required.

In addition to what @Sacrifice said, JavaScript is a dynamic programming language that is often used in conjunction with HTML and is not the same as Java.

Ok thanks for that. Then is this error: "Cannot read property of "getExtension" of null" related to that?

The error has nothing to do with it. In fact, if you had Javascript disabled the game wouldn't even start. Nevertheless, I've been trying to look for more information regarding this error, some people say updating their graphic driver solved this issue.
