What is Gear Score and How is it calculated?

GS or gear score is a value which shows how powerful a tank is when compared to others. This value ranges from 0 to 9999,0 being the lowest and 9999 the highest. Your Tank’s GS is affected by your hull’s, turret’s and protection modules’ modification, and also the upgrade level of your drone, if you have equipped it.

So how is it calculated?

For example, a hunter-smoky mk1 with no module or drone equipped has a GS of 0. However, a Hunter-smoky mk2 with no module or drone equipped has a GS of 1000, and so on. Hence, we can say that your tank’s GS(if you have no module or drone) of modification MkX is 1000*(X-1). Alterations or Auguments give 100 GS each(A maximum of 200). A drone, if unupgraded but equipped gives you an extra GS boost of 59. And, the maximum GS contributed by a drone is 599, while having 20 upgrade levels. So, upgrading your drone by 1 level gives your GS a boost of (599-59)/20=27 GS. Considering an example of Hunter-smoky Mk2 alone gives a GS of 1000, then 500 GS each must be contributed by the turret and hull. Another equation that can be used here is:- assuming you have a turret of MkX and a hull of MkY ,without any drones or protection modules has a GS of :- 500*(X-1)+500*(Y-1)

So, a Titan mk1-Smoky mk2 without anything else gives a GS of 500.

Microupgrades and the Mk7 anomaly:-

Each turret or hull modification has 10 upgrade levels before it can be classified as the next modification (with the exception of Mk7). A Mk1 Smoky has to be upgraded ten times to bring its stats up to the Mk2 level. A Mk2 Smoky has a GS of 500. So, the GS boost received by upgrading either a hull or a turret once is 500/10=50,regardless of the Mk level.

Remember that I told there was an equation used to calculate Stock GS of a Tank? Fully upgrading a Mk7 Smoky for example, does not increase your GS by 500, but  by 1000. Why? This is because Mk7s have 20 upgrade levels for them to become on par with the next modification(Mk7+/Mk8). We conventionally regard the next modification to be the next integer (Mk7-> Mk8)However, when we use this equation to calculate the GS of a Mk7+ Tank, we get a wrong answer.

GS of MkX is 1000*(X-1).= 1000*(8-1)= 7000 GS, which is not the correct answer.

Why? This is because , as mentioned before, Mk7s have 20 upgrade stages, while other Mks have only 10 upgrade stages. So, a Mk7+, should be rightfully called a Mk9, not a Mk8. Now,

GS of MkX is 1000*(X-1).= 1000*(9-1)= 8000 GS, which is  the correct answer.

Protection Modules:-

There are 3 Protection Modules, each of which can range in value from 0% to 50% protection from any turret/mines. A Fully MU’ed Mk7,with 2 Auguments and a fully MU’ed Drone, without any protection modules has a GS of 8000+599+200=8799 GS. So, the GS allocated to Protection Modules is 9999-8799=1200 GS. There are 3 Protection Modules, s each Protection Module, when fully MU’ed, contributes 400 GS to the total. A Fully MU’ed Module has 50% Protection, so each % of Protection contributes just 8 GS to the total.

How can these be used?

The equations mentioned above can be used to a certain extent to approximately calculate the Modifications and upgrade Level of your enemy’s tank and drone/protection modules. For example, if your enemy’s GS is above 6000, then you can be almost sure that they have a MK7 tank. But don’t go into too much detail while in battle, you still need to play the game and not mult xD. These can also be a great way of testing your friends’ and your own knowledge and also refresh your math skills.

Sample question:-

How much GS does a Viking Mk6-9,Smoky Mk7-2 Tank with Driver Drone upgraded to level 5, with 34% Protection against Striker, 44% Protection against Smoky, and 22% Protection against Freeze have? Answer down below
