Guide To Becoming A PRO

Becoming a pro in Tanki Online is not just about getting kills and earning crystals. It is about how patiently you master turrets and hulls. Well, in this article, you will find helpful tips for becoming a pro in the game.

Before you read, make sure you have plenty of time as you are going to need it.

1. Do not be biased in choosing turrets and hulls.

Turrets and Hulls are the most significant part of TO. Many choose one turret and try to use it in all game modes and maps. That would be foolish since each turret has its pros and cons. It is pointless to compare Railgun with Firebird each having a different range and mechanism. The first and leading step in becoming a pro is to master one turret from each type of turrets, that is, you should learn to use one melee, short, medium, and long-range turret. It will help you a lot in choosing the right equipment on various maps. Each type of hull has its advantages and disadvantages. For instance, Wasp is not to be compared with Titan as each has different mass and speed. Wasp is more suitable for Gold-Box hunting; Titan is useful for defending in Capture The Flag. Mastering all turrets and hull allows you to make use of hull or turret at different times. Gauss, Thunder, and Magnum are good in Siege due to their splash damage. Firebird and Railgun are good in Team Deathmatch for small and large maps respectively. Each turret and hull has its area of usage and understanding that helps us to make use of their unique abilities.

2. Switching To The Right Equipment, Basing On Game Mode And Map Size.

Once you have mastered all equipment, you would be easily able to judge which combo would be useful in a particular Game Mode and Map. Never hesitate to change your equipment. Choosing and switching to the right equipment will automatically help you dominate the battle.

3. Utilizing The Splash Damage And Bouncing Effect.

There are a few turrets with splash damage and a few with bouncing pellets and plasma shots. Yup, using these can help you to deal damage without being in direct line of sight. While using turrets with splash damage, you can deal damage to an opponent by hitting a prop, wall, or the ground in his proximity. Using the bouncing effect of Hammer and Ricochet helps you to stay considerably far from your opponent and deal damage at the same time. Completely understanding these helps you a lot in the game.

4 No "I" in TEAM

Try to work as a team in everyday game modes. It helps you a lot in winning the battle. To do this, you need not chat with your teammates. All you need is keen observation. Just observe which your team lacks defence or offence. For instance, in CTF, you have to see where your teammate is with the enemy flag and go to his rescue or at the least, support him. If you are a Sniper, you can snipe out the enemies following the flag-snatcher. It will help improve your skills in working together as a TEAM.

5 Using Supplies Correctly

Supplies help you to boost your gameplay for a while. If you use them correctly, you can go on a rampage. You use supplies only when you need them the most. After you respawn, you wouldn't need any supplies for a while. When you spot an enemy, use your Double Damage and try to finish him off. If a Firebird is approaching, you can try and mine him. If a Shaft is Sniping onto you, instead of using Double Armour, you can hide if you have the possibility. Using supplies can help you to get kills with less Gear Score, save crystals as you need not buy high-grade equipment for a while, and prevents you from dying frequently.

700px-Supplies_banner2.png

6. Overdrives - Key To Success

A person is a pro only when he/she knows the right time to use an overdrive. Various overdrives help you in screwed up situations and also help you to screw others up. Wasp+Freeze and Viking+Any Turret can be used to kill Juggernaut. Hunter's overdrive helps catch Golds and also stun others in situations tough to come out off. Hornet's overdrive helps counter Titan's Dome and Mammoth's overdrive kills all tanks your tank rams. Similarly, the other hulls' overdrives have their pro and cons. Knowing when to use the overdrive for maximum output comes with your understanding of the overdrive.

600px-Overdrive_banner.jpg.png

7. Making Use Of Event Modes

Event exclusive modes are once-in-a-while Golden opportunities to score high kills [In DM] and become Juggernaut [In SJR], and to catch Gold-Boxes. There is a balance between golds and kills. Just getting kills or golds does not help. You can fully utilize the event by striking a balance between kills and golds.

8. Knowing When To Shoot

When using turrets that shoot projectiles, for instance, Railgun, you ought to know when to shoot. If you are a mobile user, I would recommend switching off the Auto-Shooting option. It will help you to plan your shot precisely. When using turrets like Railgun, It is advisable not to shoot anything other than enemies as the reload is too long and if an enemy spots you meanwhile, you are dead. Secondly, never miss your shot while using Railgun and Shaft as it would reveal your location to your opponent.

 Finally, to quote "The Score":

These words that I write are for someone like me
To know you're not alone
The moves that you make ya they come with mistakes
Don't ever lose your hope
Just know, you were born for this
Just know, you were born for this

I hope this helps in your journey with Tanki Online. Thanks for your time.

Approved.

First off, welcome to the AWS! Great first guide; lots of useful tips which will definitely be useful on the battlefield. I also like that you included detailed explanations, which is really helpful for any newcomer. It's also very well formatted for a first article, so great work. With some pictures or videos, this could be a newspaper-worthy guide in no time. Keep it up and I hope to see more articles from you!

Edits: added Oxford commas, other minor grammar fixes. It seems that you have your grammar down pretty nicely, so good work!

By far the best guide I have ever seen. This is extremely thorough and addresses pretty much all issues that beginning players will face without rambling on a specific issue for too long. Bravo!

Smoky-Hunter, the very first combo we get upon joining this game! (Though the starting combo Smoky-Ares now, I believe)

Smoky is a wonderful turret, with no splash damage, and nearly-instant hits. The critical hits are the best part...

Hunter is very easy to maneuver, stable, and has decent armor too. Also, its overdrive is amazing, stunning enemy tanks within its range, and stripping them of supplies.

Wish Xp/Bp players who play just in Sandbox and Zone to know... For sure if I fight one of them with Xp/Bp they would beat me, not because they're more skilled, but because they spent their life in certain equipment also in certain maps

I see that your rank is Sergeant-Major. In my opinion the following combos might be good but, believe me when I say that it is not to good to stick to one combo at ranks higher than Warrant Officer 1-

Railgun+Hornet/Viking

Twins+Wasp

Shaft+DIctator

Firebird+Wasp/Hopper

Vulcan+Ares

Thunder+Viking/Ares/Wasp

Gauss+Hornet

You may choose any one combo. In my opinion, all above listed combos are very good.

Hope this helps!!?

I must say, XP/BP format is a lot fun to play [cause there are no drones, supplies or overdrives] and yeah sometimes it does get onto your nerves. People spend a lot time on railgun cause it is a hard-to-master turret. But I prefer Railgun, as it is fun using it once you master it. If my math is correct, and it always is, it will take just 30 days to master Railgun. Well, I am currently working on a complete guide to Railgun, as the one in WIki is not good enough and does not address all the issues related to Railgun.

I play XP/BP from 2014/2015 days, but it's not my favorite mode, I just play it from time to time playing some games and stop playing... But play this game mode more than half of my playing No and no, maybe the total time I played in XP/BP didn't pass 2% of my total..

Even though I love XP but I really hate who thinks this mode determine the skills... I remember there was annoying one in the forums in 2015, who just play in those maps playing in long CP games, grinding a lot of crystals, and he ranked up very fast, he bothered us with XP/BP, as the game completely depend just in this mode!! though in that time I were a fan of XP.

So when someone ask me to play 1v1 a lot of times I refuse, because the result is known when someone spent his life in XP/BP vs Regular player who play with plenty of turrets.

Your wrong about not sticking to 1 combo above WO1.

I have used titan/vulcan since the start and i am now fieldmarshal.

Within 2 ranks either side of me i have nearly always came in the top 3 since the start of this account.

Unless you are a buyer, having more than 1 combo becomes very hard to maintain especially considering all the protections you need to keep upgraded as you go through the ranks.

And lets not forget the multitude of updates introduced to the game in the last year alone. These make doing ok in battle very hard for your FTP player, especially if they have to upgrade lots of combos to stay in the ball park and not get trounced the majority of battles.

Your multi combo advice will only work if you have the cash to sustain them through the ranks.

My advice is stick with 1 combo, mabey 1 other turret but no more than 2 turrets, or you will find that trying to upgrade to keep pace with ranking up will seriously reduce what little cry you have, and leave you not only skint but cannon fodder for those that like me play smart and don't spread my resources over lots of combos.

My advice are ironmans, your choice amigos.

Firstly, your rank is Legend 3 not Field Marshal.

You obviously need crystals to maintain more-than-one combos.I say, can you use Firebird in Stadium TDM? Or can you use Firebird in Desert TJR? I am not suggesting you maintain your whole garage at Mk7 level. What I am trying to imply is that there are maps and modes where using Gauss+Hornet might be more beneficial than Vulcan+Titan.

See, you can master one turret, say vulcan  in your case, you are good enough to use it effectively in all Maps and Modes. But, I say, can you use use Vulcan+Titan in Arena as effectively as Firebird+Hornet/Viking/Dictator?

You need not buy crystals to upgrade one turret from each type, definitely not!!!

All you need to do is use crystals judiciously. Now that you have supplies, you need not upgrade your garage for approximately 5 ranks. You get considerable amount of supplies and crystals from weekly containers, containers and missions[challenges]. You just have to buy good equipment only during sales when you have 50% discount.

What I mentioned in my guide was to choose one turret from all four types. Even, you have used Firebird and Shaft in this account[cosmic666] haven't you?

Believe me a neither Vulcan nor a Firebird can do what a Railgun can do, and vice-versa.

You know, some time ago, even I used to think the way you do. But, my opinion has changed, from when I understood what the reality was. Now, that has considerably changed my playing style. That's why I suggest it!

IMPULSE-WARRIOR...... that is the account i was on about......have not played cosmic for years.

And your still primararly wrong. Sales are infrequent, and expecting the average player to park their account inbetween sales, so as not to rank to quick and not being able to maintain their garage at the higher ranks is asking a lot. And if they did not stop playing in between sales .....well they get wasted in battle. And in the real world of TO, not upgrading for 5 ranks especially the mid to high ones means you get scrapped every battle. Your advice is sound for buyers, but for your average random player it just does not work. Upgrading anything in TO is expensive, drones being the most prolific at consuming your cry at a astronomical rate, along with batteries.

Lastly, i pick and choose my maps carefully. In the beginning i was a shaft player, then twins, rico, freeze, with a bit of rail thrown in. Now i'm all vulcan and do well in most battles. I agree, smart buying of equipment is essential, especially if your funds are limited, which is why i say for the majority of players, pick your fav combo and concentrate on that along with any protections you can afford to get. I usually skip getting MK3/4 protections as i do have a tendency to rank very quickly, right up to 3RD lieutenant. I make do with what i have until i can get the acquired drone which offsets my inferior protections, then i get higher upgraded protections, usually MK5s, are as many as my rank allows and concentrate on them, my drone, and my turret and hull. If i had lets say 3 turrets/hulls i doubt i could maintain them without buying a mountain of crystals which i am not prepared to do. I also only do missions then call it a day for 2 reasons, 1 so i don't rank to quickly and fall behind with my garage, 2 the OP flying hull and the OP hornet, both of which dominate battles at the higher ranks and imo are both legal cheats, and remain so because the devs favour the P2W player above all others. TO is so broken and unbalanced, and it is for that reason that my way of getting through the ranks makes more sense to your average player are newbie. Even for a experienced player who might want to start a new account, although a experienced player should no the pitfalls of TO, and already no how to go about navigating the minefield that TO has become, as you progress through the ranks (of despair for a lot of players) on your way to the dizzy heights of legend.

From just your skill or maybe with a few boosts? Like what tho? Maybe FIRE IMMUNITY and INCENDIARY BAND for instance?

“Flying hull” and OP overdrives aren’t the only things which make MM unbalanced you know...

?

True, but they do dominate battles, remember we are going on about their OVERDRIVES. Without overdrives they would not dominate the way they do.

And yeah i no i have a strong account, but i'd like to think there is quite a bit of skill mixed in with that.

At my own rank i always do well, coming up against legends is a whole new ball game.

I take it you have viewed my account, take it from me even with this account and going up against my own ranks in battle, if there is a flying hull on enemy team there is not much even i can do to slow it down from capping our flag with ease if the player is a competent user of this OP hull.

TO is BROKEN, we all no it is not balanced, this is because of the devs, and bringing out OP upgrades is only done to enhance the economy of the game at the expense of most players who can't afford to keep up with the minority of hardcore buyers who take advantage of these OP upgrades.

Now tell me if anything i have posted here is not 100% accurate.

Also this discussion was at the start all about advice on how to manage your account in the best possible way.

I personally think my advice has way more advantages for your average player who wants to be competing through the ranks at a sustained level, and that does not involve getting trounced as you progress your way to higher levels of TO.

F.N.....By the way you missed out my maxed out crisis drone which i have had since WO3. I no how you guys like to bring me down a peg or 2, i wonder why that is, is it because i don't take any crap, and ACTUALLY say how it is, and don't pay lip service to every mod are developer who posts on here.

I may be many things in the unbalanced P2W world of TO, but i am not a hypocrite are a cheat. Yes i have bought stuff through the years, but i will always be on the side of fair play, especially for those who can't afford to buy their way through the ranks.

I have given away across all my accounts that i play hundreds of thousands of cry, by dropping GB for the players with weak accounts.

I do this because i CAN DO IT, and because i feel pretty good afterwards knowing i have helped out a few players less fortunate than myself who otherwise would take weeks to save up the amount of cry i drop for them.

I may chat in a abrasive manner (at times,) but i do enjoy helping out players who need it, and will continue to do so for as long as i can.

See, I have been playing TO since 2011. I have had 7 accounts, and this is the 8 one. You must probably know it, in 2012 there were no containers of any kind. In my second account[Do not ask me the nickname I forgot? ], which I used in 2012, has all equipment upgraded to M4. There rarely were such generous people like you to drop golds. Imagine, how hard it must have been to such earn mountains of crystals!!!

What I am trying to tell is that when you earn something by working hard, you know it's value and you respect it. Well if you get something for free, you do not know how painful it is to earn it. You spend Million crystal like water if you get it from containers, but if you earn the same you think at least ten times to spend it. Hence you make the best possible decisions. You know fortune is not what exactly I believe in.

To quote "The Score"

Blood, sweat, tears make the pain taste sweeter

You know, you may think that you are helping so called 'less fortunate' tankers by dropping them golds, but in reality you are just stopping them from exploring their true potential.

Well, I am not trying to say you are wrong, but believe me working hard to earn crystals makes you strong and well-versed in the game.

TO in 2012 was way worse than what it currently is. I really enjoy it now, actually more than what I used to before. That is why I just intend and wish the community to grow.

You are very polite and forthcoming in your posts, but sadly they have no bearing on what actually happens/playsout in TO in 99.99% of battles.

And you try telling the scores of players who i have dropped gb for if it stops them grinding out battles THE HARD WAY, just because they get a few thousand cry from me.

You are the definition of a dreamer, i am a realist, the two very seldom go hand in hand, unfortunately my take on TO is far more accurate than yours.

How to get the best out of crisis drone.

I could not have upgraded it this fast are my protections if i also had to concentrate on other turrets/hulls.

GG, not a flying cheat to contend with, just a OP hornet/rico which killed me, and hammer, Both deaths could have been avoided but i got over zealous, my mistake.

It's a game, enjoy the deaths you receive as well as the ones you give. ?
