Darkness, raindrops and light

Life is complicated. We try to keep our eyes on our future and let our past devastate us. Amidst the hustle and bustle, we forget to enjoy the present. Every moment is a gift. A couple seconds ago, this very moment was in your future, then it became your present and now it has become your past. We often muse over our past actions and wonder, 'Had I done just thing one little thing, it could have made a huge difference!' But we often don't come to the realization that our present is soon going to become our past, and in a few weeks, months, or years, we will look back at this very instant and wonder exactly the same thing again. Bottom line, rather than being captivated by guilt of changing the past, we can change our present so we don't repeat our mistakes.

Like all great philosophers, I myself learnt this lesson not so easily. Time is moving extremely fast. You might be a kid in your childhood years playing tanki online peacefully and before you know it, you are married with two kids and are on your way to your job amidst a global pandemic. Sounds fun, innit?

Sometimes, we should just stop whatever we are doing and contemplate on our moments. These moments, these seconds that we consider so minute are like rain drops falling from the sky. Slowly, but persistently, these drops form a puddle. The very rain drops you considered to be nothing have accumulated, flooding an under pass and delaying your arrival to an office meeting by 30 minutes. Moments are just like these rain drops - bit by bit they accumulate. When you are seventy years old, you realize that the very seconds you ridiculed have now become not hours, not days, not months, but years of procrastination.

When we were young, life was wonderful. It was a fairy tale. We used to read fiction books and laugh on the concept of 'monsters'. We used to say 'Pfft, monsters don't even exist'. True, they don't exist in physical form, but as we matured, we realized what these books were trying to prepare us for. We may not be chased by a Dracula while moving on the street at 9 PM, but we are now chased by greed and desires. The same greed that deludes a person to become a robber and steal your belongings; the same desire that deludes a person to become something much, much worse. We soon understand that monsters don't have long teeth and don't suck upon your blood, but they rather have a quite normal two eyes, two hands, and two legs. They don't live as outcasts but dwell among us in the faces of our friends, random people we meet on the subway, and our co-workers.

Remember how we used to be afraid of the dark? I, for one, am no longer afraid of the dark. Darkness is just the absence of photons. We never feared darkness; we feared what lived inside of it. Then as we grew, we realized that there is nothing that lives inside darkness; it is empty, just like our hearts. We are all looking for love, affection, and happiness. We began relating our existence with darkness. Both are empty and both like to be left alone. We realized that monsters don't live in the dark. They live in broad daylight, under the shiny sun. We grew to love darkness and hate the light.

Article Approved!

In this aptly named inspirational and motivational piece, Sacrifice focuses on the beauty of the present moment and how many of us fall into the habit of taking our surroundings for granted. We tend to get haunted by our past and stressed out about the future - all without appreciating the here and now. Our days are numbered, so don't put off what you can do today.

"Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit - yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring." - James 4:13

Brilliantly written and masterfully executed. Sac, the reporter blood flows within you.
