Those mults dying repeatedly more than offset anything a few good players can do.  Those mults often lose you the battle.

I don't get too hung up on winning or losing a MM match anymore. I just want a reasonable reward for my time and effort, so crystals and stars. Your team did well down 3 players. The worst thing though, is losing a lopsided match with very little to show for. I avoid those at all costs by leaving early.

Playerbase getting thin is the fault of the incompetent game designer. Really, the explanations that are given for gameplay related updates show that he has no idea how the game works from a player's perspective.

That being said your issue is caused by the MM system which doesn't put players in battles that have already been going for a certain amount of time. Not sure whether I'd like being dumped into battles that are about to end better than being outnumbered on occasion.
