How to Make Maps in TO - For Beginners

Hey there! Have you had any ideas about new maps? Well then, in this topic, I will teach you how to turn your idea into a reality.

Part I – Setting Up

1) Go to the link here and download this folder and extract it.

2) When you open it you will be presented with several folders and files. Do not worry - for now, you will only need the folder highlighted below.

3) Once you open it, you will find an application called AlternativaEditor-light. Open it.

Congrats, the setup is complete. Now, let's get familiar with the interface!

Part II – Interface

1) As you can see, the interface is simple. There are 2 main panels.

· The Workspace - this is where you will see the props (models) that you have placed.

· The Props Panel - this is where you will see all of your props that you have imported

Part III – Importing Props

1) Go to the library drop down and click load.

2) Then in the window that pops out choose the library folder which will be in the file you downloaded. Then click select folder.

· It will start importing the files.

· If you face any issue like this, just click "Okay" and it will go away. This might happen a lot when your importing, so it is best to stay close to it while it imports.

Great work - the props should be all ready to go. Your map is ready to be made, so let's dive into the process below!

Part IV – Controls & Building The Map

· I have prepared a video on how camera controls & moving and placing props

Note: I forgot to mention how to select a prop in the video so here is how. In the dropdown menu shown below, choose a category you like and it will show below the props in that category. Choose one and follow me with the video below.

Prop Controls & Camera Controls

Part V – Finalize & Play

1) Using the controls taught above, add props and make your own map. Like This :D

2) Then go to File > Append Tanks Map (CTRL+A).

3) In the window that pops out choose the Maps folder and save it in there.

4) Open the Tanki MDK Application which will be in the folder.

5) Then, choose your map which will be in the top of the list and click this button (idk what it says, I guess its play)

6) It will open a window with your map ready to play, just press the INS key and then press the F to bring up a tank and drive it around your map

And voila, you have your own working map! (BTW Yes, the map I sent and this map is different because the other map I made well before I could save it the electricity went :D)

Hope this article helped you to make your own map! And if so please do send your map below, It would be awesome to see what your guys have made ^^

Approved.

Sorry for the late approval - have been a bit flooded with tons of newspaper work to do. But enough from me; let's get into the article. Definitely a great second article and decent guide. I feel that it would make a magnificent and detailed video guide as well. It's very clean, brief, and explains just enough. However, I'd definitely like to see a few more words here and there if you can add them as this is close to the minimum word count. A few suggestions for that would be adding in things like your personal experiences with mapmaking and some advanced tips here and there to add a personal touch to the piece. Otherwise, it's a great article with plenty of potential - it's well thought-out and concise. Keep up the great work!

Edits: Very minor grammar fixes (added a few commas), added a few transition sentences

Spoiler

Quick note: Introductory phrases in sentences should be separated with a comma.

(ex. In this store (introductory phrase, describes the next clause), there are two clerks (independent clause).

I also added a few transitions to make it smoother between each step - consider adding them in future articles for a smooth a clean article.

Thanks ^^ <3 Btw the word limit is low because I was trying to make this a simple article not too much info, and I was thinking of making a 3rd article regarding advanced map-making ^^ anyways Thanks for the feedback <3

sup i'm the CEO of mapmaking just passing by ??

great guide, only going to note a few mistakes, when you're going to export a map you must save it as 1.x in order to test it, as well as adding at least one yellow spawn point so the map would be able to load

as for the Alternativa Editor to be able to install it you must have Adobe Air installed and execute the installation file through cmd.exe (executing the program with one exception, if you just open it the installer would appear to be 'broken')

apart from that its a really good guide for beginners to get to learn how the editor works and how maps are made and to suffer by the poor performance the editor has when making gigantic humongous maps

if you're interested in mapmaking you can ask me if you have any trouble or need advices and shameless advertising maybe join our little mapmaking community on discord here: https://discord.gg/zWBTCDP

? Thank you CEO Of Mapmaking ? ?

❤️ Thank you for the feedback + corrections Appreciate it

Nice job. Very concise and extremely useful. I've never made a map before, but I think I feel a little inspiration to do so after reading this ;)

Don't type bright colors in bold... they hurt the eyes (especially in the new forum theme)
