The meaning behind maps names

Hi hello guys, I'm just curious about many of the maps names.
I decided to pull a list for all of the maps names and trying to find the meaning behind it. Most of them maybe are just too obvious, but the others are somehow weirdo.
Honestly I inspired the idea from an old topic, but not in this forum.
Maybe not all of my conclusions are true, you can correct for me the wrong.

That's cool, seems like you put a lot of effort into that. Maybe we can even add some of it to the Wiki.

A few extra details that I've noticed over the years:

Brest is the name of a city in Belarus. Its famous for numerous reasons, being the location of the signing of the Treaty of Brest -Litovsk which withdrew Russia from WW1 and also being the site of the defense of Brest fortress in WW2. I suppose the tall buildings on either side of the map are representations of the said fortress or even a metaphorical representation of the first major military confrontation between Germany and the USSR?

Esplanade is also interesting in that the map is actually a partial recreation of Red Square, notably, Lenin's mausoleum and Stenatskaya Tower. I don't know if anyone has ever realised that whilst playing on that map but the resemblance is uncanny. Grimly, notice that a destroyed tank is located inside the Map's recreation of Lenin's Mausoleum.

Osa is also the Russian name for the SA-8 Gecko, a Soviet era mobile anti-air system still in use. I believe it translates to wasp in Russian as the missile system was suppose to 'sting' NATO fighter groups should they attack the USSR.

Serpuhov was one of the high-water marks of the German invasion of the USSR where Soviet armoured divisions (tanks) halted the German assault on Moscow as part of a general defensive operations in the winter of 1941-42.

Good topic, but you're a bit off on some things :)

Corrections:

  • Barda is a town in Perm region, which is, as you may know, where the game devs are from.
  • Camp used to have no bridge in the middle, so it was just two separate islands, which could only be played in TDM format with each team respawning on their own island. Hence everyone was "camping".
  • Combe is named after a landform, much like Canyon. It's a synonym of "valley", which is what the map resembles.
It definitely has nothing to do with the village, since the Russian name for the map (Овраг) is just a translation of the word.
  • Esplanade is named after an area of the same name in Perm.
  • Picture of Gubakha (not the most picturesque place haha)
  • Massacre is probably named that way because of how open it is, so battles on it are, welll... a massacre. But yeah, Arena would also work.
  • Monte Carlo isn't a region in France, but the capital of Monaco, which is an independent country. It's best known for its wealth, as well as hosting the most difficult Formula 1 track on its city streets. The fact that Monte Carlo in Tanki is a racetrack is a reference to that.
  • Novel could mean either a book, or some new invention (novelty). Not sure what it has to do with the map name. Seems random.
  • Osa is another city in Perm region. Osa is also "wasp" in Russian, but, interestingly enough, that's not what the hull is called. For the Wasp hull they instead opted to literally call it "Vasp" with Russian letters. Same goes for almost all other hulls.
  • Parma in context of Tanki refers not to the city in Italy, but to the old name for the city of Perm, where Tanki devs are situated.
  • Polygon in Russian (Полигон) means a place to test weapons. A shooting range basically. So it's not so random, but the map doesn't really look like a shooting range.
  • Scope implies "a large open area".

P.S. I like how you put in less and less effort into the descriptions as you went down the list, eventually basically ending it with "etc." once you got to Stadium ?

Brest is also a French city and Military Port.  Also has a Castle.

An esplanade or promenade is a long, open, level area  which is well represented in the map.

Oh maybe, true. I thought about it just with the English name

But about the Scope, you don't know the scope? It's like the Shaft sniping mode or Cannon camera.. Which the map completely resembles it.

And lastly true I just got exhausted and busy to complete the topic so I said etc... ??  But honestly I opened it in Game Discussion so I was even think to not writing every map to open a chance for others.

Sorry guys for the late of response, but I haven't had a free time to read them all..

Oh also why you gave Maf 9 Likes while you left my original topic with only 4?

Same as with Combe, the Russian name for the map does not resemble the English meaning you suggested at all. "Простор" means "expanse" or "large open area".
