Introduce new kinds of locomotion with future hulls, besides tracks and hovering

Recommended Posts

Since Tanki introduced hoverning hulls besides the tracked ones, why not go further and introduce more kinds of locomotion, since Tanki is a game with crazy futuristic tanks?

I'd love to see wheeled tanks and tanks that walks with legs. Or crazier ideas, like a tank that drives with spinning screws, as an old Soviet vehicle did, or a tank that works like BB-8 from Star Wars, a turret that sits on a spinning ball.

The animations for any of this doesn't have to be very complex I think ?

Edit:

A new locomotion could be purely esthetic and have exactly the same driving characteristics as current tanks, for those wondering about having to learn new controls for the tank.

Ya like BB-8; a soccer ball tank that would be neat and that no way to get flipped heh...

That game CROSSOUT has walkers; but what benefit would they be? hm,mm...

As for Hover Hulls please add a STRAFE Keybind; that would be not hard to add..come on... thanks

We already have this with that new Viking skin. I don't think devs want to add "true" wheeled tanks that drive like a car, since they will just be annoying to control in context of normal tanki gameplay.

This was stated as planned as far back as 2016. I'm pretty sure it's a very low priority task though, and may never be realised at all.

Crossing uneven surfaces, possibly?

Wholeheartedly agreed.

When I brought up different kinds of locomotion I was thinking purely for esthetic reasons, not that it would have any impact necessarily on gameplay or the way the tanks feel when you drive it.

Nah, the game is too complex as it is. Introducing new turret or hull mechanics will just incentivize the game's veterans to stay away from the game, as it is impossible to keep up nor fun to relearn how to be effective in battle.

How about legs like these?

A marvelous bio-mechanical design. The legs could 've been hairer though, for protection against Freeze.

Since tracked tanks and hovering tanks have some difference to their driving characteristics, it makes sense to have some differences between other types of locomotion too. Here are my ideas:

Wheeled tanks:

Pros:

  •  Faster acceleration than any other tank (not faster top speed though). This makes them especially good at peek-a-boo tactics.

Cons:

  •  Can't climb as steep surfaces as other locomotion types
  •  Will drift when steering at their top speed

Walking tanks:

Pros:

  • Can climb and stand on vertical surfaces! This needs to have some serious weakness though to balanced though, perhaps by having it move very slowly when climbing, or lose its grip and fall if taking any damage when climbing, or only be able to make short climbs.

Cons:

  • Is the least agile of all locomotion types. Turning speed and acceleration is the slowest.

Screw drive tanks:

Pros:

  • Easily drives over other tanks, living or dead. A screw tank will never bump into other tanks, only drive over them.
  • Can move side-ways, like a crab ? (the real-life screw vehicles could do this by spinning the screws in the same direction)

Cons:

  • Can't tackle or stop the path of other tanks while it's driving, only if it's standing still
  • Although it can move side-ways, it doesn't have the completely free and fluid motion that a hovering tank has, so it can't move in-between normal or side-ways.

Ball tanks

Pros:

  • Can never fall over, will always stay upright no matter what
  • Is very good at knocking around other tanks by driving into them with its ball-shaped body. Tanks rammed by it at top speed will bounce back slightly. This can be a weapon to knock them off cliffs.
  • The same complete freedom of movement of a hovering tank
  • The turret will always be horizontal, no matter what angle of a surface the tank is standing on

Cons:

  • The slowest acceleration of any locomotion type in the game
  • Is the worst at driving up steep surfaces (loses speed and move slowly), struggle with its breaks when driving down steep surfaces
  • Has a tall profile

I know the chances of anything like this being put into the game is slim to say the least, but it's fun to think about! So please tell me what you think ?

This idea can be implemented after creating the need of it. For that Developers have to create maps having different terrain such as rocky mountains, Deserts having real sand which can affect the speed of hull , Icy Maps , Muddy Maps etc.

We will have to take inspiration from Tortoise as it walks slowly on lands but swims quite fast under water. Similarly, Hulls will have certain pros and cons in different Maps or moreover different sections with-in same map.

New Tanki hull to be released will be like :
