Lower graphics setting for Remastered maps

Recommended Posts

Have an option to reduce the detail level on HD turrets and boxes, and limit the texture draw distance to close range to medium range. This would allow all players, regardless of computer capabilities, to play effectively. You may wonder, "Whos gonna have computer problems running tanki in 2023?". Me. That's who. Also others, while maybe less common, may still struggle to run tanki at a stable and playable framerate due to the updated graphics.

Valid

Developers are constantly working to optimise graphics and improve performance on low end devices. Unfortunately, there's only so much they can do to improve performance without significantly worsening the overall look and feel of the game.

When it comes to software design, at some point you just have to accept that a few users have devices which are so weak, that it's unreasonable to optimise the project down to their level since the vast majority of users have devices that are capable of handling higher-end graphics. Some sacrifices must be made.

That being said, it's possible that a new graphics option may be added to reduce the level of detail on remastered maps even further.

Even though im disappointed, that's understandable

My laptop can almost just play tanki again. The biggest problem that I'm facing on my laptop are remastered maps. It just can't handle them. So it shouldn't be unreasonable for wanting the devs to add an option to revert the remastered maps back to their older version.

they have to make an option of "classical skins" in which old m1,m2,m3 will be in it. the low poly textures make game more stable for low end pc. THIS IS THE REASON WHY YOUTUBERS QUIT"

I would suggest an option for legacy skins, they're less detailed, this will be applied for tanks, buildings, skybox, everything... for low performance laptops.  I'm going to use this setting with my Ryzen 7?

This is fine as long as remastered maps follow the exact same geometry that standard maps use. But this would severely restrict artists in the type of maps they can create. If map geometry must remain simple like in the old maps, then why bother remastering them at all?

Besides, it's better to allocate more resources towards optimising actual remastered maps, rather than creating a whole new system where two types of maps are available and must be compatible with one another.

I don't care if they remaster maps or not. But the remastered maps they've given us have posed a huge problem.

I don't know what other people do, but when I'm in MM, I'm focused on the battle. Not going around sight seeing.

So yeah, the artists are just wasting their time for the most part adding something that only the very minority of the players will be able to enjoy.

Can't they just add it in the settings? "Revert Remastered maps back to older version".

Every additional setting does two things:

  • Makes the UI more complex
  • Adds another item that has to be maintained and tested with every new update to ensure it's not broken.

So yes, in theory they could "just add" a hundred different settings to customise every little thing, but in reality the number of settings should be kept as low as possible — just the essentials. One must be especially careful when a setting affects the game in a way that's as significant as completely changing the map models.

I think a more correct approach to this problem would be to scrap the old maps, but also add an even lower detail setting to the remastered maps, bringing their "weight" (the number of polygons, resolution of textures) close to the level of old (non-remastered) graphics. But then again, is it really worth going through this whole process when it benefits only a very small part of Tanki's player base?

Even though i suggested it in the first place, i know itd be a lot more difficult to implement a switch that can change the models mid game. I do have another idea, and that is being able to toggle off remastered maps in the queue, so you wont play on them at all. Might make a new topic on this idea so that it might get a bit more attention.

I could also say the same the for making remastered versions of the maps. Is it really worth the trouble when only a few players will be able to enjoy it?

Besides, most of the player base may have good running devices now, but wait a few years at least. By then some ( lets call them the "Highends") might upgrade to a new device while others ( lets call them the "Lowends") will have to stick with the ones they have for years to come which could end up hindering their performance in tanki.

Lets say its been 10 years since this discussion, the Highends could be declining in population or tanki may start to become unplayable for them since they don't seem to want to ever optimize the servers. At least 10 more maps have been remastered, meaning less maps the Lowends can play on, and their population may have increased since then.

You've been saying to have a setting that reverts the remastered map back to the old version, which if you meant to only be able to play on the old map, you could've worded it a lot better.

I never said it wasn't, I was just saying we wouldn't have understood your idea's true intentions due to the wording.

The way you phrased it made it difficult to know exactly what you were talking about. Regardless, i now know what you meant.

Another thing to Quote: Why does the Text Quality (Who Destroyed Who or the Goldbox Message etc) reduce when switching to lower texture settings? Actually, my main system's power supply died so I have to stick to an old notebook for now.

To be fair, even after years - HTML5 Version is not fully optimised properly, because even this old notebook of mine used to run this game on 60 fps (mid-max Graphics settings) on the Flash version. Currently; Low Textures or not - doesn't matters cuz FPS remains the same for this old thing.... (40 - 50 fps)

It's most likely because anti-aliasing gets disabled, creating sharp edges around the letters.

Well, with a database of suggestions that goes back to 2016, that's expected. It's not easy to come up with a new idea that is reasonable AND original.

Ya, my laptop ASUS TUF A15 2021 can handle those remastered maps but it overheats abit 80-90C as oppose to 70-80C for regular maps.

I love the look of those remastered maps just hate seeing my laptop overheat. Sometimes I regret I got a laptop a desktop would have been better for cooling,

but I bought it during the gpu shortage times back in 2021. I have an RTX 3060 and now the 4060s are out so they will drop in price.

I'm not sure how a cheaper Nvidia 1650 does with these remastered maps, I think they could handle 60fps....

I am get 165fps but it drops down on these maps usually but not below 60fps...so it works just overheats a bit.

Also I would suggest looking at google chrome or opera gx browsers for this game; I found firefox and ms edge don't work as well.

Thanks for suggestive these ideas to at least have an option to stress out your cpu/gpu less.
