Why is the game extremely laggy for me sometimes?

Most of the time I can play Tanki with only a little lag, but sometimes, like 1 third of the times I try to play, the game is extremely laggy and impossible to play. Why?

Thanks, I've followed the advice but it didn't have a noticeable effect on lags. I wonder if the problem is Tanki and their servers and not because of me, because I can play War Thunder Ground Forces on my old laptop without any problems, though the FPS isn't great. That seems like a much more demanding game than Tanki, but Tanki is laggy and at times extremely laggy, with FPS around 2 so that it's completely unplayable.
