Please help. How to make a really interesting arena for a tank battle

Hi guys

I see that you all have played a lot of tank sim games. I need an expert opinion on what the battle arena shall look like to be interesting for players.

We are developing a new “analog” tank game. The main difference is that the players shall drive a real radio-controlled tank model on a real arena. At the current stage we think that the arena size will be 157 x 157 inches (4 x 4 meters) to start with and the and the tank size 5 x 6 inches (12 x 15 cm).

We are going to start with some rural landscape.

Your advice will be very valuable for us.

Hi

as for the speed, we are not sure yet. They'll be fast enough to securely control the tank.

You see the terrain through the camera installed on the tank (not in the God mode when you look from the heaven and see the whole picture at once).

There will definitely be some city based battle fields, but I don't think that you'll be able to get inside buildings.

Ok, so what I would recommend from my experience of tanki online:

1. Realisticness should not be the primary target. For example, in real tank wars you can go days without seeing an enemy. Do you think, if that carried into an online game, the game would have many players? Seriously? There are many ways in which you should not be seeking realisticness. Try to consider what your players would want ahead of realisticness.

2. Think of what your players would want. The point of a game is fun. Your not gonna earn players by making a boring but impressive-graphics game. Your going to earn them by fun.

3. Make sure it doesn't cost too much. If there is cash incentive, then make sure that cash from real money is a fair deal: not excessive.

4. Try to get some variety in terrain. Not the same old same old terrain for every map.

5. Make it easy to play as a newbie. In some games, newbies just cannot do a thing because they: get owned by higher players/have a boring gameplay. Try to make your game good for newbies.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I would love to beta-test, but I don't have FB and don't intend to have it soon ;)

By the way, everyone DOES realize this is a REAL LIFE tank right? Unless i'm mistaken, you can't really "kill" anyone here, or "respawn".

I'm not sure, so I gave tips assuming it was a online game... but i don't know to be honest. The quote isn't all that convincing, I'm not sure. The fact about "Beta testing" does assume it is not a real-life game. Let's see what he says.

Dear all

battle arena is real. It looks like this:

dronearena.th.jpg

at the moment the radio controlled model exists in form of a chassis only

droner.th.jpg

The players will drive the models through the arena from the Internet browser. As for now I cannot show you the GUI as we are still working on it.

So the game is a sort of mix of real life and online environment.
