History of Cross

Cross was founded in 1927 when Gregory Peck had a brilliant idea to increase the effectiveness of billboard advertising: confuse the highway motorists!

To test his theory, he grabbed a shovel and, for the next several days, rearranged the main street of a nearby town so that it curved, looped, and twisted in a bewildering fashion. The poor souls who drove on the new road soon became hopelessly lost, and started using the billboards as reference points as they tried to find their way.

The advertising companies that owned the billboards were thrilled by this demonstration and quickly bought it from Peck. After a few backroom deals with the Department of Transportation, all the roads in the area were converted to the bizarre new Escherian style.

Once the exhausted drivers finally realized what was going on, they took to the streets in giant battle tanks, determined to avenge themselves for all the trouble they went through in their daily commutes. The advertisers countered with their own tanks and the battle raged on until every combatant lost his job for not showing up to work. Therefore, no one had any money for food, and soon, everyone starved to death. The end!

One of this map’s greatest glories is its simplicity. It is nearly one hundred percent symmetrical, and the tasks of capturing flags or points are as straightforward as possible.

Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch

Best hulls, in order from most to least effective:

1.     Hunter

2.     Hornet

3.     Wasp

4.     Viking

5.     Titan

6.     Mammoth

7.     Dictator

Best turrets, in order from most to least effective:

1.     Ricochet

2.     Twins

3.     Hammer

4.     Freeze

5.     Firebird

6.     Smoky

7.     Isida

8.     Railgun

9.     Thunder

10.    Vulcan

11.    Shaft

Capture the Flag

Best equipment to use, based on your role on the team:

Flag runner: Light hull, especially Hunter, and mid-range turret, especially Ricochet and Twins.

Draft: light hull, especially Hornet, and short-mid range turret, especially Firebird and Isida.

Flag Guard: heavy hull, especially Titan, and a long-range turret, especially Smoky.

Rover: medium hull, especially Viking, and short-mid range gun, especially Ricochet, Freeze, and Firebird.

Best routes to take when taking the flag from either side:

Capture Point

Best equipment to use, based on your role on the team:

Capturers: light hull, especially Hornet, and short-range turret, especially Freeze and Firebird.

Guards: medium hull, especially Viking, and mid-range turret, especially Twins and Ricochet.

Locations of the points:

Goldhunting: Find that Drop Zone!

NOTE: No matter the map or battle mode, you should always press the DELETE button as soon as you hear the Gold Box siren. You will have ten seconds to dart around, searching for the box’s drop zone. When you respawn, you will likely be dropped in wherever you haven’t already checked, and you will have all your supply cool-downs reset.

Since MAFIOS0 has not yet finished a guide to this map, I have created my own. This map is by no means complete; it only shows the drop zones that I have seen.

As soon as you hear the siren, drive up onto the overpass and search from one billboard to the other. If the drop zone isn’t on the overpass, you should see it from this vantage point.

A tip for duelists:

When dueling at Cross, you must be extremely careful not to lose sight of your opponent. Sounds basic, I know, but Cross has loads of obstacles that will hide him perfectly as he sneaks in close for a killshot.

If you do lose sight of the enemy, drive up onto the overpass. Do not stay in one place (well, you shouldn’t do that at all on this map), but do drive from one side of the pass to the other. In doing so, you will see your opponent’s location, and you may get in a good position to drop down on him.

* * * * * * * *

That’s all, tankers. Play at the oft-forgotten Deathmatch paradise that is Cross, and if you happen to see Gregory Peck anywhere (assuming he managed to find food), tell him that MadDog21 wants his shovel back.

The poor souls who drove on the new road soon became hopelessly lost, and started using the billboards as reference points as they tried to find their way.

I love it! You should seriously consider doing a series of articles where you come up with creative explanations for aspects of Tanki, like maps, gold boxes, crystals, etc. It would be the best if you could make it coherent (explain all these aspects with one overarching theme). The other day I read a forum post by noting that Tanki doesn't have any creative backstory like some games do. Tell me if you think it's worth a shot.

As for the article itself, it's nicely structured but it's a bit short. I'd like more free-form elaboration and contemplation of different strategies. Also, some video clips would be pretty useful.

Cross, Barda, Rio. Hunter is the best hull? Just because you use Hunter that much on those maps doesn't make Hunter that 'gorgeous' on them.

Drive Viking on those Maps, or Hornet... After all, Hunter isn't the only hull available.

^, this is just my opinion, don't take it too seriously, okei? Nice article btw.

Only suggestion = pick different formatting for headings and subheadings.

I am a complete fan of dictator and could not help noticing you rated it last as the least effective hull on cross. It is actually a really good hull for all battle mods and really good for tanking flags on noise because of its armor and faster turing speed. The reason most people think dictator is noob is because most people only use it when there is bigger golds so they never get very good with it. However i use it m4 as my main tank and have been using it m4 for over a year it is much better than most other hulls and is great for flipping people with hammer witch goes best with it. In my opinion it is the best all around hull there is but it takes a lot of skill to use.

Nice artice.

Please rework the routes for the flag runners, as yours are.. well they are crap. Sorry for saying it so direct.. but you as a newspaperreporter should get those things at least checked by some other persons before you publish it. A lot of beginners trust in your work here.

Your routes work only if you are willing to drug your way back home.

At the moment I don't have the time to make a picture on my own, but I can point out the main faults so you might correct them on your own:

  • Always first think of the enemies spawn-areas and where to move un-spotted
On cross they spawn between the houses (on their side) as well, and your routes lead right through their spawnpoints..
  • On the way back you don't use cover where it is available and so you are an easy target to longrangers on top as well to longrangers that follow you down there.
  • You need at least two route options back home, as - especially on this map - it makes a very big difference if you are hunted by a medium/long range turret or a close range turret.

I really like the way you write - your articles are easy and fluent to read.

Additionally I propose to you to add the following aspects to CTF:

  • For CTF games it is an _essential_ part of the game, where to hide if you have the enemy flag but your own flag is gone (so you cant deliver and have to survive). Please add this as well to your (future) articles, as this gamemode is not just about getting the flag, but also about delivering it.
Hint: always hide close to your teams spawn area, so that they can support you fast.
  • Same goes for the "how to get my flag back" part. Please add this as well.

regards,

BlackWasp

ps: I especially like your history story that you wrote, it's awesome :)

^ Meh, he's been in worse situations where there was a whole group of haters, and he made it out fine. What makes you say he can't survive one? :P
