Burnt Seconds

A sky dashed with streaks of orange hovers outside my window; the same color as the time I burn.

The flames are my thoughts and passions and everything I hold dear, and simultaneously they burn everything I love. My clock is Meleager’s wood and yet I burn it from boredom. My parents warned me; my classmates scorned me; but every minute I throw onto the fire becomes an hour that gives me the power to live. I think it’s insane that you say what I do is inane when you ignite your own clock one lane over one hour later. My fire in my soul is what makes me whole it’s why I don’t tire from life and the burdens of my heart. My desire to part with the seriousness of life is my flint and the hard struggles of reality are my steel.

The scent of smoke fills my nose and I delight in the aroma of bonfire. I burn the time and hope that it does my homework for me while I lurk behind a computer screen. I may be just a teen but I’ve already won a gold medal in days drowned down the drain. After all, water doesn’t put out every fire and problem in the world. People say my situation is dire but I say to chill it’s a struggle uphill but maybe my bonfire will do my work for me. Eventually I douse the clock and attempt at midnight to fight the sleep and complete my math or essay or chemistry work. That fire in my soul is what makes me whole it’s why I don’t tire from life and the burdens of my heart. It sounds impossible that incompletion completes me but it gives me time to do what I care about. The flames are my dreams and love, so perhaps the seconds are merely coal used to fuel a train. The seconds are burnt, there is no denying that they are gone, but is it really that bad if the hour was a pawn in my plan to stay sane? You can feign surprise and pretend you don’t too ride your train and hope that it’s traveling out of your pain, but we all know.

Sometimes you just need to burn time.

So I wrote this for a little poetry workshop at my school, and thought some people here might appreciate it, possibly see themselves in it. To look forwards to in the future, I have an almost finished guide for a map, some story thoughts, some non-story thoughts and bits, or entirely something else. The Map Guide is coming out first on account of your voting towards me writing some more Tanki articles. My thanks go out to those 10 people who participated, and I hope that the other 100 players who have viewed this as of right now are willing to provide feedback in the future.

May the winds ever blow in your favor.

So, I don't really care if all those people who viewed this Comment, Like, or even Read it, but can all you people at least fill in the poll? I very much would like to see results, so that I can custom-tailor my next piece to my audience. Otherwise articles end up like this one; somewhat unpopular.

This pulls in opposite directions - stretched taut with tension in the unsaid.

Yeah, it uses a stressed and tense tones with a fast pace to kinda portray those feelings of tension and stress. I hope you found it worth reading.

Yup, the effect is definitely there. About pace, actually I read it kinda slow - taking it in like. Felt too heavy to be fast - not that that's a bad thing. For me, pace lies in the weight of words and length of the lines - a mix of short, long, abruptly short and languidly long ones. Goes hand-in-hand with rhythm I guess. The pace here suits the piece.

Thank you everyone who participated in the poll!

Hopefully this will allow me to cater to your preferences more, and lead to articles that are according to your preferences! Feel free to always PM me if you have suggestions!
