the ranking up system is always there, almost everyone is aiming at rank up, which is main goal of the game. dev wont wast their time on changing the game for few test players. if your friends really dont care rank up, ask them to create a new account which make it possible to play together. if your friends refuse to make a new account, that means they are really care about their rank, and proof the concept of this game and motivation.

I played 1 year free, and I got M3 hornet and M2 railgun. once you got skills, it is not that slow to get crystal, when you rank up, you will get free crystal faster, and game pace will be faster as well,

I tried with my hornet M3 with nitro, still can not reach the top, the speed is not enough

in later rank, it take month to rank up, it would be better with buying experience.

it helps when it comes to last few flags, the high ranks are fighting tightly, then, one high rank drop off line, and a WO5 joins in, that means the team with WO5 guy will lose as it is just one shot kill in their team, so high rank will kick WO5 to invite other high rank in.

I have made clan before, what I did is posting a clan page first, recruit, you may get 4-5 response within 24 hour before close, then you open another clan with 4-5 member, then get about 10 members in the end before 24 hour, and your clan survived. then it will conitnue grow, and then, member no show in later stage, can't meet up in battle. you lose faith in clan, and luckily you may get some best tanki friends from the clan; then, with those loyal friends, you start another stronger clan, ... the cycle continues, either you will get a fightable clan team, or you end up got no one, and clan closed.
