Basically you are suggesting what other games have had for millions of years - allowing you to rent something.

Instead of making the equipment cheaper, make the crystal buying cheaper, that'll be easier for the buyers and we'd spend more. Currently its ~$6 for 1000 crystals. That's too expensive now as the price of the equipment has gone up.
