Well if you are more kinda attacking player in a map like silence go for fire with hornet... anyways as people above have said, use the combo which you enjoy playing with the most... as for your rank taking advise is too early.

But in your view you neglect the ability of making critical hits by smoky. So I think splash of thunder and critical hits of smoky make both the turrets quite balanced.
