Contest [Issue 26] Continue the Story! [Chapter 1]

OBLIVION CHAPTER 1 Connor was in Gubakha, a base for him to rest in before facing the militants that threatened the nation’s security. “Our nation needs your help, Colonel Connor! Defend it with glory!” Generalissimo Makarov had said, but now Connor could not see where ‘glory’ came in, because he had been travelling with fellow corps for at least a week, oozing sweat, his clothes covered with grime; rashes and blisters were breaking out on his skin due to the heat, and mosquitoes buzzed around them all the time. They had set off from Serpuhov all guns blazing, holding their heads up and shoulders straight to impress the Generalissimo, thinking of victory, honour and fame, but now all Connor could think about was rest, air-conditioned tents and Coke (he was a strict non-alcoholic). He sighed, but he had a duty to do. He immediately walked out for inspection of all the hulls and turrets. The Quintillion barracks were busy polishing their Railgun M3s, mean machines designed for going for the kill. In the battle, these would show no mercy. Assembled beside them were a gleaming set of Hornet M3s, all clad with the mighty Zeus paint. “You need to work on your turret rotation, Ruben,” he said to a Captain. “Aye Aye, sir,” was the curt reply he got. The atmosphere was tense all around the camp. Connor entered the Close Attack Corps to inspect their Firebirds and Freezes when he saw an Intelligence Board member sitting inside the tent. “Any news, doctor?” asked Connor. “The best, Colonel. We have tracked the militants to Bobruisk, a town about twenty kliks from here.” “Very well. Prepare for the attack.” With that, Connor left. Mark sighed and walked towards the Strategy Tent. They were short by both ammunition and people. They would just have to fight and see what happened after. If they win, they got the glory, but if they lost, they would die with glory. -------------------------------------------------- Suddenly, a purple shot split the air – A Railgun M2, the signature turret of the militant group. The battle was on. Alarm bells started ringing, and Connor jumped into his Viking M3 and donned a Ricochet M3 with a grim slash on his face. The special forces fought bravely against the militants, but for every enemy they destroyed, two more seemed to join their ranks. Every strategy of theirs was anticipated by the militants, even the most secret ones which he only shared with his officers. The special forces placed mines, used their supplies and even tried kill-stealing, but nothing worked. Slowly but surely, they ran out of ammunition. Soon everybody in the special forces except for Connor was either dead or out of ammunition. As Connor geared up to make his final stand, he saw Ruben aiming a shot. “Over here, Ruben,” he called, hoping for some backup. But Connor was shocked when Ruben turned his Railgun around and shot him. Connor staggered for breath, almost out of health, and squeezed out the words – “Ruben! You traitor!” “Sorry, Colonel, but I’m tired of being a fugitive. I want a luxurious life, and I’m prepared to do anything to achieve it. So, Goodbye, Colonel.” Connor geared up to make a scathing remark, but then, as Ruben’s Railgun’s tip glowed orange, he braced himself for the agony to end. ~PRATY \ -
