[Issue 38] What You Don't See (Part One)

The alarmed went off, screeching into the silence. “We’re going out again boys, load her up and prepare for a nasty fight.” This was the routine, every morning, when the call came, the machine had to be loaded with fuel, ammo, whatever it needed; the wheels had to be greased and supplies were put on board in preparation. “Where's she going to today boss?” asked Mark, head of technology and mobility. “We gotta go to Serpuhov; another bleeding Deathmatch, surprised he ain’t bored of it yet.” “Yeah, well those sure as hell are draining on us; 60 minutes of pure hell and a load of deaths later and all we get is the meagre amount of crystals to buy some supplies, or increase the damage. What does he want her with anyway?” “It looks like a Ricochet and Viking job, but he wants us to use that Emerald paint on it, doubt there’ll be many Thunders so expect a bumpy ride until he changes.” The boss marched off towards the front of the garage and looked out over the battlefield. He’d seen it so many times now, and so had his boss. Every nook and cranny was known, every sniping spot, every drop zone, every gold box pad. The boss sighed; “Here we go lads. Mark, stick to his plan. Will, be ready with that paint. As we don’t have Mammoth, you can store Vulcan away Kai, but remember to keep Railgun out, he likes to change to that. Let’s rock this pitch. ..... 60 minutes went by, and 5 equipment changes later, mcmonkey25 had pulled in 6000 crystals but at a cost. “185 supplies used, 120 kills, 98 deaths. Below average, he’s slipping” “Probably just tired, anyway, changing to Hammer and Hunter is what did it. No micro-upgrades and little skill… I’m surprised he’s even a Generalissimo” “Give him a break,” uttered the boss, “if he doesn’t use it at all, there’s no point in him having it, he earned it anyway, it’s better out there than gathering dust in the garage like Freeze.” “I just wish he stuck to what he knew, our statistics our lowering and it isn’t looking good if he wants to make SemiSeries”. Pod was the statistics technician. He flicked through numbers on an imaginary spreadsheet in his AI, seeing what chances mcmonkey25 had of winning a battle or catching a gold. “Well Pod, talking about it isn’t going to get him anywhere, he needs to train, hopefully he’s picked something good.” As he spoke, the alarm went off and a large board of details came into view on the holo-screen. “Sandbox XP/BP 4v4, BP and Emerald, he’s keeping it simple. Now I want him in that battle as soon as possible guys, we don’t want anyone running and we need some more crystals.” “On it boss!” called Kai from the garage as he pulled out the correct equipment. Will painted the slightly rusted Wasp and oiled up its speedy wheels. “Mark, you got a tough job remember, I want you to react as quickly as possible and make sure that if he wants to go left, he goes left!” Battle Entered Loading Equipment accepted 3, 2, 1… ..... Mark fell back onto his bed and let out a long sigh of relief. “Man, tough day today; he was zipping around in that Wasp like a dog after a bone.” “Tell me about it… Then that photoshoot with his friends, he was equipping combos quicker than I could change them. I could hear him getting frustrated with the speed but there wasn’t much I could do.” Kai picked up a copy of ‘Changing pace’, a manual obviously meant for people like him. “We really need another guy, boss said he’d be getting one soon. No-one round here knows anything about crystal expenditure, we’re really wasting our time with some of these buys. I can’t do that percentage stuff, so I’m useless, it’s damn near impossible for me I’m telling you.” Just then, there was a knock on the clunky metal door to the garage. Will jolted upright, having been woken from a rather violent dream. “What was that? We can’t be being shot at?” Another knock, this time followed by a rather timid voice. “Hello, this is mcmonkey25’s garage right? I haven’t got the wrong address?” A small grate in the door opened and the boss’ brilliant blue eyes stared piercingly at the man. “This is there alright. What do you want? We haven’t got a delivery coming in, didn’t buy anything.” “No, I’m not here to make a delivery; I’m Deano, your new mathematician. You called the agency about a week ago, said you wanted a guy, salary 3k a week.” “That’s right. You’d better come in, it isn’t awfully safe out there nowadays, all sorts of crooks.” Deano walked in to the staring eyes of the other men in the garage compartment. He managed a brief smile and sat down to the chair the boss had ushered him to. Mark was the first to talk; “So, you’re the new maths whizz, right? Glad to meet you, I’m Mark. I work on mobility and all the machinery and stuff.” The shortest of the men that walked up to Deano and offered him his hand. “I’m Will, I paint the tank and make sure it doesn’t rust nor squeak. The decorative stuff really.” The last man smiled at him and gave an awkward wave. “Kai, equipment changes, the heavy lifting’s my thing. Lugging about the big stuff that these weaklings can’t handle.” He gave a friendly nudge to Mark and winked at Deano, assuring him that it was just banter. Deano turned in his chair to face the older man who was stood behind, who had let him in. “Sorry, I didn’t quite catch your name.” “You just call me the boss and we’ll get along fine,” he said, grinning at Deano. “You’d better get some rest though, we got a lot of talking to do tomorrow and I want you all up bright and early. He’ll probably be playing at 8am like he always does nowadays. A right pain he can be sometimes.” The men laughed and then walked back to the dormitory. Deano put down his suitcase and went into what he thought was the bathroom, before finding himself in a storeroom. “Hah, not that way! First door on your left before the entrance room,” announced Mark smirking as Deano left the room. ..... Deano woke up to the smell of oil and the sound of something mechanical whirring. He rolled over flicked on his holo-pad and saw that he should have been awake 15 minutes ago. “Am I late? So, so sorry, I think I overslept” declared Deano as he ran into the common room. “Yes, you are, but not to worry, he’s oversleeping too, so we have time to discuss what we need to. Oh, and cereal is in the cupboard; Kai ate all the granola so you’re stuck with Shreddies.” ….. After a quick shower, Deano went into the boss’ office. The desk was covered in papers filled with numbers, charts and diagrams, all from Pod’s database. “That Pod is a real good piece of machinery, he’s kept everything ticking over for now, but we need you ‘cause we just don’t know what to buy anymore.” “Well, how much we got coming in and what have we got in the bank?” “Pod estimated 7k a day, with about one gold every three days. Add that to the 300k we’ve already got and that’s your lot.” “Well, if that’s it, I had better start working out what we should and shouldn’t get. I’ve got some predictions on the sales as well as the distribution of our funds between Micro-upgrades, new equipment and supplies.” Deano pulled out his holo-screen and swiped, bringing up a large database of numbers and figures. He appeared to tap some in before pressing enter. The screen flickered with numbers as he turned it off. He looked up and smiled at the boss, who cocked an eyebrow, intrigued by the process. “It’s a large, automated filing system, basically projects where money can go. I’ll plug in the percentages later and then see what crops up,” answered Deano smiling at, for once, having superior knowledge. The alarm went off. “Great timing, you’d better find a nice viewing spot Deano, Massacre DM, it certainly lives up to its name,” the boss winked and then shouted more instructions to the other men. “He wants Railgun and Hunter Kai. And Will, make sure that Needle is looking perfect, wouldn’t want to make us look bad in front of Deano. Mark, you get yourself ready, those hills are a real menace, even to a solid Hunter.” He turned around to see Deano clutching a sideboard as the compartment lurched into movement, moving towards the battlefield. “You alright there kiddo?” “Ummm… I-I’ve never seen a battle b-before. Let alone a t-t-tank in action.” Deano was slightly trembling. “Well then why the hell did you sign up for this?” shouted the boss as the machine whirred louder and the whole garage rocked. Battle Entered Loading… Equipment Accepted 3, 2, 1… Dropping. “Buckle up; you’re in for a bumpy ride Deano. There ain’t no turning back now.”

[Issue 38] What if Tanki...? (Part 2)

Time for another dip into what could have been as in this issue I answer some of your questions and attempt to theorise 'What if Tanki...?' Question 1 from - What if Railgun and Hornet were removed from the game? A flood of tears, from every XP playing tanker in the game. Railgun and Hornet is the classic combination, the go-to set, the alpha and omega, if you like, of the game. This original and menacing combo is easily the most popular in Tanki, having its own format no less! And to top it all off, All In, StarSeries Season IV champions, chose it for a discount. You don’t get much better than that. What I personally love about Hornet and Railgun is that they are both simple in function, yet take a long time to master. Losing the most popular turret in the game would call for a new turret to take its place, and the same can be said for Hornet. With the rise of StarLadder, Hunter or Wasp may become the most popular hull, but in my opinion, Hammer the most popular turret. With high impact force and a good damage figure at close range, this gun is pretty good at destroying any enemy. And what about the paints? Well, Prodigi, Forester and perhaps even Digital or Savanna feature in most tanker's garages at high ranks. And most low ranks have a Railgun paint equipped a lot of the time. A lack of necessity for Railgun protection would cause a large alteration of paints as well as the probable scrapping of Prodigi. I think that the range of protections from paints would become more widespread as there is no definitive weapon which it is paramount to defend against, so paints with perhaps 20% protection against four different turrets could crop up, making DMs and perhaps even CPs a lot more balanced. So, without Railgun and Hornet, two vital pieces of equipment almost every tanker has in their garage would be lost. Even though there could be benefits for less popular turrets such as Smoky or Hammer, there would still be problems with paints due to a lack of a stand out turret to protect against. I can only guess as to the outrage from players, and many would quit. StarSeries would never be the same, XP/BP would vanish, and who knows how much I would cry. Question 2 from @Zev_merkava - What if Tanki had peace treaties? Well, diplomacy in Tanki, it could be very interesting. I’ve already seen that clans have ‘allied clans’, but it would become even more interesting in normal battles. For example, if you were allied with a player in a battle, they would always come on your team. Or in a DM, you wouldn’t hurt each other when you shot because you were ‘officially teamed’. I can certainly see advantages of this, yet it may anger players. For example, you would have to have a peace treaty with only one person at a time, else in DMs, you would be a near invincible trio. Furthermore, if Isida could then heal in DM mode, tankers without peace treaties would be at an obvious loss. The practicality of peace treaties would also be lost higher up the spectrum, in StarLadder. You can’t just not play an opponent because you have a peace treaty with them… However, fair to the idea, like if you had a takeover team, you may just gather a band of players together and all play along, much like a clan, but perhaps bigger. This would be good I suppose as you’re always with friends, and that’s probably the best way to play Tanki. Question 3 from - What if PRO battles didn't exist? PRO battles are another method Tanki uses to personalise your experience. The option to choose battle length, supply use and even Friendly Fire (an option not available for normal battles), means that a PRO battle enables a player to play in just their comfort zone! The sad thing is that, without PRO battles, there would be very little choice as to what kind of battle you can join. I think that all battles would have supplies and drops on, with a choice of three set lengths only. Sounds a bit dull, right? We would also lose the ability to create XP formatted battles, causing us to be sent back to the dark days where it was only out of luck that no mults joined your battle. The frustration caused by lack of good XP battles may cause people to stop training efficiently, especially with Light format not being allowed supplies. Unfortunately, this may lead to the demise of many clans who can’t train against other clans unless both are of the strictest maturity. The biggest loss though? Parkour. A combination of no parkour mode and the new anti-cheat would cause it to die out. There would be no way to climb buildings, ride along fences or make a 22 tank tower, let alone a three tank one! PRO battles are a key part of Tanki, whether you can afford to enter them or not it seems! Question 4 from @momy950666 - What if drugs (supplies) didn't exist? Drugs are an intriguing matters. In my opinion, they are much like marmite; you either love them, or you hate them. Many tankers, especially at low ranks, find it unfair that they are always confronted by druggers if they can’t afford PRO passes. Yet again, higher ranks find supplies add to the competitive element of the game. It takes skill to know when to drug, and which supply to use. If supplies weren’t in the game, I guess battles would become tougher to win, but more about skill. Providing drops still existed, they would become a much more important part of the battle as they would be the only way to boost your tank and defeat certain enemies. As well as this, I suppose players would have much better equipment. No need to spend money on supplies, daily missions would only be worth crystals… We’d all be millionaires in no time! However, like I said, the game might become a bit duller. Don’t you just love being in a 1 on 1 situation and drugging about seven times until one of you finally dies? What? A waste of crystals? Pfft. So, there ends another quick theorising about what might have happened in Tanki if only a few small (or large) tweaks had been made. Have any 'What if' questions yourself? Write it in the comments below and perhaps I'll be having a go at answering it in my next article! Or have any ideas about what might happen in the above situations? We'd love to hear them too!

    [Issue 38] x5 Battle Funds - It's Raining Golds!

2nd August 2015. A date that will go down in TO history as the first time there were ever x5 battle funds, and what a day it was indeed! Golds were dropping every five minutes in large rank battles, battle funds were soaring over the 100k mark regularly, and a lot of regular Tanki players no-lifed the whole day, but it was worth it. Personally, I think I had a pretty good day. I spent most of my time in Polygon XP/BP CPs as they seemed to be everywhere. The high increasing fund, along with the fact that I am actually good at these battles, meant that even in a first to 100 match, I was getting 4000 to 5000 crystals. My total haul for the day was just over 75k, a personal record, but what I really enjoyed, was of course the gold boxes! In the first hour I played, I managed to catch one, which is a rare occasion for me, but over the succeeding two hours, I added another three to that. And, as if I was happy enough with that, I couldn't resist going on late for an extra hour and a half, in which I caught an additional 4 gold boxes. For those of you who battle with me a lot, you will know I am a calamity when the gold box drops, owing to the fact I haven't yet been able to produce a gold box video for my channel. But that day, the golds were dropping so hard and fast, it was nearly impossible to not catch a few! But what was the day like for everyone else? I spoke to a group of players who gave me there accounts of what happened on this incredible day. Hi guys, so how well did you do on 2nd August? : 2nd August; well the start was good, the gold notifications were great, could really feel the x5 funds . They just kept on dropping all the time, 'siren siren siren' :P The battles were tougher as everyone had saved supplies up for this day but somehow I managed to win most of them . A little problem I saw was Sabotage and I bet many faced that problem; so that was five times more painful too . But overall if people played short 15 minute battles and they are good, I think they enjoyed the day too, like me ^_^ . The golds were great too, picked up almost 20 of them in less than 2 hours After that just started a 999 minute battle which ended on server update with almost 300 minutes remaining . Around 70 Gold boxes dropped. Got a huge reward of 404k crystals . On the 2nd of August, I was in a game in the map was Arena that was 5 hours long, the enemy team had my good friend . The fund got to 200k and gold boxes where falling every 5 - 10 minutes, I let my friend take them, my friend's team won and he got a nice reward of 40k while I was on the losing team and got 16k. I was in 1st place and would have received 20k however I finished 3rd due to me constantly having to take breaks. The total amount earned on 02/08/15 was 20,000 I would have earned more however there was a lack of good battles and servers I like were all full and/or full of lag; this resulted in me logging off. The servers where people with my rank are, tend to be full almost every other day, yet server amounts have been reduced this means when large amounts of people come online we have a rather constant lag and sluggish play which ruined the x5 day. @lukey0 - Note: Everything I talk about here is on my @Total_Drama07 account and not my @lukey0 account. I started to play straight after server restart that day. I equipped my Hunter M2, Thunder M3 and Emerald and I was ready for battle and of course Gold hunting. I joined a Polygon CP as there was plenty of them that day. 15 minutes into that 30 minute game I caught my first gold of the day, and it all began from there. I ended up playing a total of about 10 hours and 15 minutes that day (Yes call me a no-lifer. :P) I managed to catch 9 Gold Boxes (not bad for a small M2 Hunter against giant Dictators everywhere) and made overall 77K crystals, not bad for a Lieutenant General and it definitely gave me the required crystals to buy my next kit purchase. Every battle I joined, no matter what mode, Gold Boxes constantly rained down the whole time, lets be honest it was like heaven for most. ;) Every battle also gave ridiculous rewards for small scores/effort put in. An example is I had 574 score and received 3208 crystals, not bad. I would normally only get 400-600. Every battle played you received an excellent reward whether you won or lost, it was more than normal. @greyat I played far more than usual during that day, earning a total of around 85k, as well as catching 6 gold boxes. Both of these figures stand as a personal high for me, and I will likely never surpass for a long time. A few standout moments for me were: Catching the first gold box of the day Playing a series of productive Wasp-Fire battles with friends Getting my largest fund ever - 13k It was great fun earning so many crystals and to have battles raining gold boxes, even though I unfortunately didn't get one. I mostly played Polygon XP/BP CP as the whole of the RU1 server was absolutely jam packed with those battles, when I could get onto it of course! Overall, I wouldn't say I did that well. Some of the battles created lasted a very long time, so that a high battle fund could be generated, but I rarely had enough time to finish one. Many people created private battles with friends, especially Fire and Wasp, in order to get high crystals funds and make golds drop. Well, 2nd August was one day that we tankers loved! Everyone will remember it for a very, very long time. Gold boxes were just raining on us! I collected almost 17+ gold boxes in just ONE DAY (I've never caught that many even in a week :P ) I think we probably all enjoyed it, no matter what rank, everyone had tons of fun, whether that was collecting gold boxes, earning funds, or just playing Wasp & Fire with our best friends. Let us also not forget those who let us take the gold boxes in the battles we played. We are thankful to all of them :P Semyon told us, " It'll be one HELL OF A DAY!" and you know what, I think it was, in fact, better than that :D Do you think x5 funds will ever come again? And if they did, would you do anything differently to what you did this time around? It was a good day indeed . I hope such a day comes at least once every year even tough I fear that this will not happen again in the current version of TO. But if it does come again, then aside all the fun of the variety of battles, I rather play comparatively larger battles with my friends than playing alone in short / long battles as I observed that without playing with friends, every long battle is unsafe and may result unfairly. Hope It went great for all of Tanki. Do I think they'll come again? I think so. What I'd do differently, would be to play smaller games so that there's less of a risk of wasting a lot of time and losing out big. @lukey0 I believe x5 funds will come again; it was worked for by the players and not given for nothing. So far every Star Series Finals we have had the opportunity to get x5 funds, this time we achieved it. If I could do something differently I might play a bit more? Or not waste so much time waiting for a good battle to show up. Either way, even if this was a one-off thing, or something that happens again, it is certainly not an event to miss! @greyat x5 funds are the result of a huge event, so are unlikely to occur frequently. I doubt if there'll be one again this year. It's possible that they'll come once a year though. I would probably play less during the x5 funds if it ever happens again; I feel kind of bad, doing non-stop Tanki. I do think x5 funds will come again in the future, although when? I'm not sure. If they did, I would wake up earlier and go and no-life in battles, play the whole day most likely - I was unfortunately quite busy on 2nd August though, which meant I missed out on it this time around -_- I think we have a 50/50 chance of the x5 funds coming back and even then not until a long time in the future. However, if they do, I'll play for a full 24 hours. Sadly last time, I only played around 8 hours :( . I'll also play with friends only, due to tankers taking my gold boxes  , sometimes you're so close to one, and then someone just jumps on you...When you see someone else's name has taken the gold box, well, you need to rage quit for a time :D I really enjoyed playing on this day, we tankers, never even dreamt of a day like this to come, but dreams come true. We will all remember x5 battle funds, and lovely raining gold boxes for a very long time! So tankers, that was what a few players thought about the x5 funds day we have earlier this month. In my opinion, it won't be a one-off. Although it will be very rare, I still look forward to our next time with huge funds and constant golds, so that I can no-life once more! And what did you think? Feel free to post your views of the day below and discuss whether we might see another x5 day again...
  17. It's definitely still there...
  18. He didn't break the rules. TankViewer is an 'in game' resource, that is where he got the turret from. And then the additional effects were done by him, and additional details were added in by him, i.e. he wrote the damage bar as well as reloading time and impact speed. It wasn't wholly original, no, but the quality, creativity and purpose aspects of the advertisement were very good. There is no fixed judging, it is all fair as I did it myself and the winning entries were in my opinion the best ones.

    Ideas for Game Modes!

In my opinion, there is one key alternative to this idea: make a gold drop in every fairly busy battle. Players will still mult for golds even in this mode. The fund in a normal battle will only increase more if players are playing, that is obvious. If players aren't playing, the fund won't increase, so it is less likely that a gold will drop anyway. This means that players can still mult because they are patient and can just wait for others to do the fund increasing for them, especially since a gold is ensured to drop once the other players have done enough work. This 'invisible counter' is just like the 1/7000 wheel that dictates normal gold boxes dropping, except that you want it to always drop at a certain level. Even in normal battles, we still have this suspense as well as an increasing fund and a battle going on, so I see no reason why another mode is needed.
