IMO, the best and most logical solution is to display friends who are in a private battle as offline. That way, you can't tell if they're in a private battle or really offline and it retains their privacy AND you won't look weird trying to talk to them in global chat and they don't respond.

isaiah doesnt have much time to play but sometimes he goes online dirty isnt that good of a paint. m2 shaft is good

ok i understand the privacy part but i still cant tell if they're in private battle or in the lobby looking at battles or afk or what another suggestion is if a friend is in a private battle, they can look offline and you wont be able to tell if they're offline or in private battle but if it shows they're online, you know they're not in a private battle
