  19. Chapter 4: The Last Stand "Stopp!" one of the soldiers demanded again, as I take a sharp turn to the left. The German soldiers discharge their weapons at us, merely missing Boris and I. The bullets collide into the wall, pulverizing it, and releasing a cloud of smoke. I hear the soldiers coughing, as they struggle to persue us. "Lets run," I whispered to Boris. Just as we were about to take off, the soldiers had gotten through the smoke, and were trying to persue us once again. I grab my sidearm and fire at the soldiers, panting. "We gotta hide, we can't outrun the enemies in their own territory," I commented. "Agreed," Boris replied. We took another sharp turn, and spun behind a few boxes. "We have no chance if we continue running. We have to escape at midnight," I decided. "Wo kann sie sein?" one of the soldiers exclaimed. "Wir sollten auch weiterhin auf der Suche nach ihnen," another replied. German soldiers slowly tiptoed down the hall, pointing their guns around. I pulled the fuse of my grenade, and slowly stood up. "Hast du das gehört?" a soldier asked. I got up, and threw the grenade in the hallway. "Es ist eine Granate!" another soldier yelled. The explosion destroyed the hallway, but the boxes had blocked the shrapnel, just as I hoped. "Run now!" I yelled to Boris. I knew it would take a matter of minutes before reinforcements of the German forces would arrive. I asked Boris for a few more directions for the exit. As I approached the door, the door was locked shut. "Do you have any explosives on you?" I asked. "I have the key, they trusted me with it,' Boris answered. He pulled out a key, and slowly handed it to me. I quickly unlocked the door, and dashed for freedom. As I walked outside, the city didn't seem like it was empty yet. Soldiers and tanks patrolled the streets. As I slowly crawled back to our camp, a German soldier had spotted us. "Persue die russischen Truppen!" he yelled. Boris and I broke into a sprint. The soldier discharged his gun at us, as we ran down the ghostly streets. All of a sudden, Boris whines and falls on the ground. I look back, and see him on the street. I turn back... "Don't worry about me, I did betrayed you, I deserve this," Boris confesses. "No. Friends don't let friends suffer, even if your friend has betrayed you. I forgive you," I muttered, as I help him on my shoulder. The soldier approached us at an alarming rate, and I pick up my sidearm and fire once. The city goes silent, as I drag Boris back to camp. Hours crawl by, as I make a dash for camp. "Where have you two been?" Nikolai demands. "Long story..." I reply. "Okay, so let me just fill you in. Next week, we are going to attack Berlin, and win the war once and for all," Nikolai announces. A week had gone by since Boris and I had escaped from Berlin. As I began to put my gear on, Boris begins to sob. "I don't deserve to fight again, I am a coward, a traitor to our country," Boris confesses. "You are not, you ended up knowing what was right," I patted Boris on the back, "We can still win this war." "You think so?" Boris says. "Yeah," I reply. Boris and I slowly jump into our APC. An hour sped by, and we arrived in the city next to Berlin. Nikolai issued our attack routes, and gave each a map. "Make sure you don't go into the middle of the city before the rest of the defense is taken out," Nikolai confidently says, "I'm sure we can finish them off." As Boris and I march along with thousands of other troops, we see the lights from the hill. "CHARGE," I yell. We all charge into the city, and slowly conquer the city, little by little. Boris and I storm each apartment slowly. "This is so boring, let's just go storm the center of the city," Boris complains. "Nikolai said no... we should listen to him," I reply. "Why should we listen to Nikolai, he is so incompetent," Boris remarks. "I guess your right," I say. We sprint toward the center of the city, and begin to fire our rifles at the Germans. We slowly take down many soldiers. All of a sudden I hear a yelp. I look to the side of me, and I see blood trickling down Boris' head. I tied a white bandage around his head, and carried him back to base. The medic pronounced him dead, an hour later. I began to tear up, and cried. Boris had been a good friend, and he died with pride. Two weeks later, Boris' funeral takes place, and I remeber all the time I had spent with Boris, and sadness takes over my mood.
