Hello Link. I wrote this with some help from Wikipedia. The British Isles have many distinct highlands and lowlands. The highlands are situated mostly in the northern and northwestern parts like Scotland besides in northern Wales and NW-England (Lake District). The highlands are majorly formed due to geological processes like folding, faulting, continental collisions and other tectonic and volcanic activities. For example, Scotland's "Highland Boundary Fault" zone divides the Scottish highlands (which have the highest peak in UK, Ben Nevis) and the Scottish lowlands. The lowlands are confined to parts of England and eastern and southern regions. Lowlands are majorly formed due to erosion by river flow or glaciation. These include plains and coastal regions. The British Isles were divided into two parts during the existence of the supercontinents Laurasia and Gondwana. Northern Scotland was in Laurasia while other fragments were in Gondwana near the Antarctic circle! Variation in physiography has been brought about by a mixture of geological and tectonic processes which have given rise to the topography we see today. Hope this helps mate.
