Because he didnt legitimately collect them, he dropped them for himself with an alt or was in a gold rain. He basically cheated to the top of the gold/crystals leaderboard.

I have the same problem, just press random buttons until something happens. His problem is that when you try to leave the garage in a battle, it wont let you. The garage button doesnt even light up.
