Played 4 matches to confirm my turn, 3 battles had stars, 1 didn't. 3 times I placed in top spots, and once joined and it was finishing.

From my own testing it seems finishing a new battle will earn you at least 1 star. At the same time, not sure if joining ongoing battles or having a low score won't.
