I'll say it again...'был' means 'was' in Russian. 'Bill' is the same word, just written with latin letters instead of cyrillic. 'голд был?' / 'gold bill?' means 'gold was?' literally. It doesn't sound well in English. :P You get it now? :D Yeah, now I see Lieutenant explained it :P
