Ideas for Maps!

How is al-zmo playing on a custom map with friends??

Those aren't his vids, they were taken on the test server 4-5 years ago. Baston and Depo have long been removed. (and they wouldn't even work today because some of the props used are nonexistent.)

And also maps like noise.

Noise used to be one of my maps of personal choice and was very popular among other players, until Magnum showed up. One Mag I can handle, but 2 or more raining down on blue, is nearly impossible. Now you rarely see it. A good map gone into oblivion because of one single turret.

Believe it or not, I am finding that it's a lot harder than I thought.  I started a YT channel for TO, no game play, a lot of people with much better editing software than me already doing that.  Mine is just maps.  I said one month, right?  Concept a theme, build it, test it, clean up issues, touch it up, record video, edit video, finalize video, upload, with a busy work life, maybe three weeks time permitting.  That would leave me an entire week to putz around with other ideas for the next month.  Yeah, right.  That one took me two weeks, and really, I'm just now getting to the video stage, that'll be another two days at least.  Given it's the holiday season, I'll be lucky if I even get this out by the end of the week,  That said, that was three weeks, but I abandoned the November project in order to produce SOMETHING this month, because that one is simply going to take two months to finish.

 

You get an idea and then you get caught up in it and then you have to work out the details that looked so simple on paper and then you start to build and the devil starts showing itself.  Never the less, like you so well pointed out, this is like artwork, it's a craft as much as a science.  Better take your time and do it right than rush something and its crappy and crumby in end.

The arc is awesome. This Map should be called Le Grand Canyon.

Thank you, nice to have someone notice that, that's really a tough build given the tiles and props available, and it's still not completely beautiful, but it worked out in the end.  Map is done and and I need to create video and sound track, and tah dah, map!  Of course, that takes a while.

You have to tell us which library you used.

 

Also, tried loading it in TTT, failed, so I guess we need more info on the library and yours might be named in Russian.

So shot video to make the map film, after having done a drive through once already and fixing a  number of details, spent an hour collecting footage, and the last two reels I found more.  Grrrr.  Fixed it last night, gonna drive through, AGAIN, clean more if needed, then reshoot the whole thing.  I hope to put it out before X Mas Eve.

So true story. 

 

Once upon a time, a map maker had finished a map and was ready to film it to post it on youtube.  He found a few little map corrections while filming and didn't like his skybox, so he decided to fix the issues, change skyboxes, and film again.  Changes made, the map might look a little nicer with a slightly more defined edge/border, so added some tiles around edge.  "More perfect,"  he says, excellent, he moves on to make the skybox.  He uses a stock skybox image and cuts it up into lovely 1024 by 1024 images, populates the skybox folder, and loads the map to start filming!

 

It fails.  Skybox doesn't work, nasty gray sky against his lovely map.  Hmmm, maybe he messed up his skybox.  He goes back and redoes his image cuts.  Fails again.  He starts to worry, what is wrong?  He keeps carefully redoing his skyboxes.  He is losing his mind.  Fail after fail.  He gives up, returns to the original skybox.  It fails.  Now the map maker is fit to be tied and shouldn't be spoken to, because he is PISSED.  He thinks he might have ruined the config file.  He pulls an archived mmck config file and drops it in, fails.  Now the map maker is ready to lose his s#!t.  He wants nothing more than to go back to a time when he at least HAD a skybox.  In frustration, he opens a fresh copy of mmck and and just launches the stock map.

 

TAH DAH!  Skybox.  Map Maker is ready to shoot someone or something.  Then it dawns on him, the errors say resource limit met when loading the testing tool.  Maybe it's not an issue with the skybox, maybe it's an issue with the map.  He drops back to his previous uncorrected version.  There it is, in ALL of it's splendor and glory, WITH a skybox.

 

Moral and lesson of the story:

 

1.  Tanks Testing Tool loads the map, THEN THE skybox.

2.  The resource allocation is hard set apparently, thus the memory runs out sequentially.  You'll get the map, but no skybox.

 

Thoughts:

 

When having issues with skyboxes, always drop to a small stock map first.

 

ALSO, remember you made changes, no matter how small, to your maps.

 

(Note:  the fix was reduce the the tile and prop count back down, effectively just removing the border I had added.)

Large desert canyon with wide open middle passage and multi-level left and right passages.  A lot of elevated positions and intermittent cover.

 

Notes


This is a very large playing area, and really pushes the limits of the flash engine in terms of tile and prop count.  Use of half height placements allowed for interesting rock formations and designs.  This map would map for very difficult capture the flag and assault modes, while probably very fast paced control point and rugby, given its vastness.

 

 

Thoughts


Skybox could have been redone, but it was taking too long already to create and post the video.  As for gaming, like Berlin or Dusseldorf, there are plenty of players that might disdain this map, but these are the hardest and most rearding to play too.  There is a lot to be said about long distance games and team work.  Also, there is an easter egg in this video that will likely become a recurring theme, I'm sure you'll spot it soon enough.

Narrow mountain pass with multilevel pathways and many obstacles.

 

Notes


This is a medium sized map with very little room to work with.  Players would need to be very agile and quick and this would be a very low scoring capture the flag and assault map, but would be particularly good for control point.

 

 

Thoughts


More props are used in this map in an attempt to create some unique and different landscape, like the diamond shaped shelves doting the canyon walls and the angular ramps.  Dropped flags could be fought over for very long periods of time on the two side ground level paths, while the center mountain would be a frenetic and constant battle simply to not fall off while getting attacked.

Include more maps in match-making

 

 

The maps that are available in match-making are by far a few and it gets really boring to play within them after a while.

 

I would suggest having the following maps within match-making, as these were very popular and great maps in general before, and it's sad you can't complete missions within them:

 

Madness

Stadium

Edinburgh

Deck-9

Fort-Knox

Esplanade

Monte Carlo

Short Bridge

Scope

Novel

Noise

Farm

Skyscrapers

The map "Noise" should be fixed. I think that in team battles, the red team has HUGE advantage over the blue team. Many players use Magnums and the only thing you need to do to defeat the opposite team is to shoot towards their flag, where many players guard it. Also, I tried to play in the blue team, and I often got damaged immediately after I spawned.

true, but from my experience blue almost always pulls off a win.
