Tanki is balanced! We just need better maps

if tanki want to re-immerse old maps in players minds there should be days where only certain maps can be played a choice of 7-8, if forced to play them, which they would given no other option they would see how good some of them are and yes it would be great to have new maps but i expect it takes much more effort to get them through beta testing and final release and people need to come up with ideas too, several of mine have been made from simple descriptions... gallery i described it as octopus map with 8 ramps leading to a central hub with the village below from that it got taken to a playable level, the Christmas pyramid with tree on top was another one of mine I just said it would be great to have a ziggerat as these have tiers on them that would be great for tanks to run up and again it got taken to another level. All you need is a simple idea post it in the forum and sometimes they get taken up not every one will as some ideas are impractical or need a completely different platform to be made

Maybe we could start a new map ideas section that is started by the devs for serious map makers to post ideas or maps on, I think many people would come up with more great ideas than devs could handle, like MonkeyMagic did with his silence 3 map, i posted many ideas maybe 20 in all in the last map idea section and its great when you can see elements of your ideas taken up and played here

I think having only certain maps playable might be a good idea, but a lot of people would complain :\

Also, posting your map on the forum will do nothing, just like posting a idea on the forum.

 

There is a forum for mapmakers, but you have to apply to have access to it, and only other mapmakers can see maps you post.

I dont think there should be another forum for it, there was a map ideas thread, but thats kinda died.

A serious mapmaker needs more then just the players to look at their maps, which is why there is a group for them.

 

Also, most mapmakers arent serious. Mapmaking is more then just having a idea, you have to create it, make it playable, balanced, unique, good looking.

You also have to put the drop zones. I have done this, and trust me, its not simple. Getting the right positions and drops is a fairly important part of a map.

 

I think having some kind of contest, which doesnt have to be really high-quality maps would be good, since it would draw attention to mapmaking, and hopefully the more serious people would continue creating maps.

I am sure many people would complain but if it was only for a short period like 1 day then back to normal and then for one day another week it may work.

its a shame that the mapmakers post died out I loved looking at it and putting up ideas, and i did not know there was a forum only for map makers.

I think having a contest with rewards for players would get many players thinking caps on, and i have huge respect for people that make the new maps and i am sure it take way more effort, thought and skill than i have to do

If its only for 1 day a week, its not really worth it. What about having a selection of maps, which each day it changes to a new selection(and some maps would appear more then once)?

The map ideas thread was good, but it died out, probably because the ones making maps werent getting much feedback, and after a while, it isnt so interesting.

Yeah, I think a contest would be good, but not the reward being your map being used the in game, I know there was a Russian mapmaking contest(couldnt find it though), not sure how that was done.

 

Also, the idea of interactive props...

I like it, and I think maybe not having interactive, but moving props might be good, say a platform which moves up/down, so you can get to different parts of the map.

Interactive props im not so sure about, the main idea I have heard about is destructible walls, which could ruin game play in some maps. Stuff like opening doors I wouldnt like that much, I think just having moving props which dont react to tanks would be better.

Ok LiquidGold, I was just a bit confused for a bit :P

i am open to any ideas about how to reinvigorate old maps, i think a contest would be great too, i have no commitment to prizes like you said the prize is getting your map made and used in game

Rico is not broken -.-

It's not broken- it just got nerfed by a big amount. The Ricochet gun is a flexible gun, and you can't just shoot it like a Smoky. Find your angle, and magic~ You got a kill. You have to be smart with it and know when and how to shoot. The majority of the people however, think that in Tanki Online you just shoot straight- probably because Ricochet is the only gun with such an ability. That's why people say it's broken in my opinion.

I think most of the current maps are fine, just some of them need to be removed. Other could also be edited to work with CP better, but I wouldnt say there was that much of a need to re-do the current maps.

Sorry, I was saying the reward for a mapmaking contest SHOULDNT be that you map will be used in the game, instead a crystal reward, or something.

For me, the maps definitely need fixing, in three ways:

 

1. Sorting out of mapmaking and bringing in new maps. Tanki have brought out new servers when necessary - surely they have enough server space to include maybe 20 more maps? There are so many different maps out there which are so good - even from just monkeymagic, cheese3000 and Vikingsrall's maps - the ones which I have seen - there are many which would improve tanki, let alone all the other potential mapmakers.

 

2. Benefits for bringing in old maps. One of the main problems of Tanki is that it is monotonous? Why so? The same maps are played all the time. There are many simple solutions. Add extra crystal box drops in certain maps to boost their popularity would be one, but it's a short-term solution and unlikely to work. Bringing the map down to the lowest ranks worked with Polygon and is working with Serpuhov but I don't really like that too much either. But what about a limit of each map on each server? Say, 5 games of each map on a server? It would mean that some people are unable to play their favourite map, but overall it's for the good of the general community as more maps are played.

 

3. As cheese mentioned above me, CP needs to be introduced everywhere. Come on. It's been long enough.

 

As people can probably tell due to my articles in the newspaper, I am hugely passionate about maps. I think it's a disgrace how tanki have made a lot of changes elsewhere but in terms of maps they have been stagnant, far more maps need to be introduced and work on maps, improvements and all sorts, are necessary. The fact that madness has yet to be re-introduced, the lack of bonus drops on crash/gallery not being sorted out, the lack of CP in a lot of maps, all of those grate me so bad. Even getting rid of the useless maps to create more space for other newer maps would be good. It's not props that matter, it's layout. And yes, map making is an art. An absolute art.

 

More maps are not a problem, in my mind - there are so many epic ideas around. It's just getting around to introducing them. Where the 'ell is "New Kungur"? Or "New Tribute"? Or "Labyrinth"? "Madness"? "Hangars"? "Gladiator"? They've been in the test server for long enough!

Agreed, but nothing much seems to be happening :\ And, not much will until the developers decide to add in more maps, since creating maps will do nothing if the developers dont see/do anything about them.

I dont think increasing crystal drops in certain maps is a good idea, especially if you remove them after a while.

What if, each day/week, 1 map had a increased crystal drop, and that map was auto-created every hour-half hour?(on each server). That would mean the choosen map would be played, and people might become aware of maps they dont play.

Not everywhere. There are quite a few maps which adding CP wouldnt work, but yes, CP does need to be on more maps.

Well, it is partly props that matter, since a lot of people dont play Iran because of lag, and thats because of the props :P

Im hoping when the new props come out they will be adding new maps, but I wont be surprised if we dont see much for a while :/

Also, from what I understood about maps actually being added to the main server, they are accepted to be tested, and then testers/mapmakers test them, and if they like them, they go on main server. Which probably means maps which have been sitting on the test for ages wont be added.

There were several maps sitting on the test server that were quite nice but have never been added. The highlight of them all? I'd say would be Persia or Iran II.

 

Some of you might even remember it, it was one hell (hell isn't a swear word, i swear :3) of an epic map. Not to mention the New Kungur and Labrinth. Why is it that only maps like Atra II and Esplande were added to the main server, not to mention Scope, without which no one would've used Shaft, ever. (It was also the map where people figured out Shaft can shoot through walls).

 

It is good maps that lead to good breakthroughs for a game, at the moment, off the top of my head the only non-mirrored, yet perfectly balanced maps I can think of are Kungur and Tribute. People say Solikamsk and Serph are balanced, but they're not!

 

We would really appreciate an official response to our #rant over here. The loudest in this thread are the people that Tanki would call their foundations of the English community from several years ago.

meh, obviously need to be more active, never heard of any of these maps your talking about before :wacko:.

Maybe Im in-active and am wrong, but arent kungur and tribute played fairly often?

Not necessarily, and anyway as I said, the winning map(s) dont need to be used in the game(of course, if they are good, they could be considered, but it shouldnt be definate).

I just dont like wave cos it looks bad.

Im pretty sure I have played almost all of the maps(apart from on test).

Go and check other ones out, you will find some good ones(dont play ping-pong though).

ping pong used to be one of the four maps that a new player could play on, out of the four, ping pong was the easiest to rank up on because of the short distance between the spawn spots.

Yes , I dislike the popular maps like silence , sandbox , island , farm , bobruisk ; I've played a lot in , I know everything : the game play is boring and monotonous ( sometimes it becomes irritating )

 

I want to play in the maps rarely played like Rift , Industrial zone , Canyon , Deathtrack , I love those maps but they are rare and when I create one it almost never get success <_<

I think the problem with that was that Mehdadoo didn't make it... and he wouldn't allow anyone else to use his props? I think that was the issue. But it was a bleeding damn good map, I absolutely love it.

 

It is good maps that lead to good breakthroughs for a game, at the moment, off the top of my head the only non-mirrored, yet perfectly balanced maps I can think of are Kungur and Tribute. People say Solikamsk and Serph are balanced, but they're not!

Come on, surely Silence II (!) is? Actually, I'd say Soli, Osa, 2042, and Barda could also be considered as perfectly-or-almost-perfectly balanced maps, but even so that's just 6.

 

Absolutely, more maps and better maps have to be created, but also current maps need to be updated. Let's take Serp, that's obviously not balanced... surely the routes to the top flag can be ironed out, so that the bottom team has more chance of success? Surely an extra route somewhere, maybe cut the big building in the front of the flag in two and put a route to the flag through there or something? I really like how Tanki have corrected the issues of Bobruisk and improved it into a vastly superior map, hopefully they can do the same with other maps.

I know, but some of the maps there are just really good. :| And they're just left there in the test server, what are the testers looking for in a map? What was wrong with New Kungur/New Tribute? Of course, I don't know, but then I would like it if more maps then could be brought in to continue being tested and approved/rejected. Maps just left in the test server for ages... |: nah.

Because it used to held 15 or something.
