Is it possible to a pc or a laptop to catch on fire and fries its own hardwares because of extreme overheating?

yes it is very possible to cach fire there are a few boards who run a very hot northbridge like a few Gigabyte ones who keep the northbridge at around 80-95 degrees celsius that combined with a high tdw processor say 140w on high loads say video editing/3d rendering , gaming etc without propper cooling or air circulation in the case , or in case of fan fail

can catch fire it is not a negligible chance, always make sure the fans are working and that the air intakes/exhausts are not obstructed  , and clean the inside of  desktop case of dust at least once a month with a vacuum cleaner and/or a pressurised air can

This question has been answered many times here and most of all the answers are correct.  The risk is there.

However i'd like to add that before we get there, if you have a fairly recent system (past 4-5 years) the likelihood of it bursting into flames are quite slim simply cause all modern systems (even some crappy netbooks) have a temperature sensor and when it gets too hot you'll get a BSOD and the system will power down.

Also if for some reason there isn't a temperature sensor or it has been disabled / tweaked in the BIOS (thanks to some extreme noob genius)  it is more likely that you will have some overcooked / damaged components (most likely the capacitors as these are usually the ones that go first) and hence a system failure of some sort.

Flames fires and apocalypse really comes much later on,, well provided someone didn't fiddle around and did some bad hardware works .

Win XP Pro SP2 32-bit

Intel P 4 3.20 Ghz

Windows doesn't support windows xp SP2 for a quite time. I googled your error, and windows xp SP2 owners reported problems about this error too. Upgrade to SP3
