180 Years ago today, the battle for the Alamo ended

alamo.jpg

The Alamo Mission outside of San Antonio was base to 100 Texan soldiers under colonel James C. Neill. Aware that an attack was inbound, General Sam Houston sent Colonel James Bowie with 30 men to remove the artillery from the Alamo and destroy the building.  However, Bowie wasn't able to transport the weapons due to the lack of mules, so Neill and Bowie agreed to defend the Alamo or die trying.  On February 3, 1836, Cavalry Officer William B. Travis arrived with 30 men as reinforcements.  On February 8th, a small group of volunteers including U.S. Congressman David Crockett arrived to help.  Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna his army of 2,000 reached the Alamo on February 23, 1836.  The soldiers raised a blood red flag, signifying that there would be no prisoners. After Captain Albert Martin's unsuccessful negotiations, Bowie and Travis ordered the Texans to fire the cannons.

The next day Bowie became seriously ill and had to stay in bed, leaving Travis in sole command. By march 1st, 9 Mexicans were dead with 4 wounded with 1 Texan dead. However, Santa Anna received 600 more troops while the Texan soldiers were unable to receive aid because the Mexicans had the Alamo surrounded and complete control of San Antonio.  Colonel James Fannin attempted to organize a rescue mission with his men from Goliad and volunteers from Gonzales, but he aborted the mission.  On March 3rd, more Mexican reinforcements arrive, bringing the Mexican force to about 3,100.

At 5:30 AM, March 3rd, the Mexican army began its siege on the Alamo.  After an hour of brutal combat, at 6:30 the battle was over and a Mexican flag flew over head.  An estimated 600 Mexicans died in the assault(about 1/3rd of the attackers) and all but 6(1 escaped and 5 surrendered) Texans soldiers lost their life(about 200 is estimated).

On March 11th, when Houston reached Gonzales while en-route to San Antonio, he learned of the defeat at the Alamo.  The Battle instantly became a rallying cry to Texan soldiers and civilians.  Many American upon learning of the battle left to join the Texas Army.  After the Battle of San jacinto, Houston told Santa Anna "You should have remembered the Alamo"

Announcement

So, given the recent events of Hurricane Harvey, I asked that my thread be reopened.

As I'm sure most know here, Houston and the coast of Texas is pretty much under water, destroyed, ruined, or some combination of the above.  I live far enough away that I have been spared this truly difficult fate.  That said, I know of at least one person here, if not more, that were impacted by Hurricane Harvey and I wanted to extend support and well wishes to all the members of the Texas Tanki thread, and those still not members who come from those communities.

Words without acts though are hollow, and I wish to reach out to them and ask if there is anything we could offer them in terms of support, material or otherwise, in their time of need.  While we sit and play Tanki, they are in the real world, and in a situation that really won't get resolved for many of these families for maybe years.  Anything we can do for them is maybe no more than some trouble of time, maybe some monies, and that's about it, but for so many, it will be more than they could expect to have for some time to come.  Help is also not material, it can be in the form of having someone to talk to, networking for job opportunities else where if they have to relocate, etc.

If you are interested and wish to help, please post the following into this forum under your account name:

"Wish to aid"

If you are a member that has been affected and think we could help in anyway, please PRIVATE MESSAGE ME your need/wish here with the following subject line:

"Need (and/or wish) <insert what it is you request>"

I will then see what I, and others wishing to help, can do to provide assistance for the requests made.  Again, for the sake of privacy and the dignity of those who suffered this tragedy, if you area victim, you need not announce it here.  Do know though that those who do share their help will be made aware of whom they are helping in respect for their peace of mind that they are indeed helping those truly in need.

All of those displaced by this event, you are in my prayers, and I can only hope of all those here as well.

I will reach out to those who have indicated they can help with the requests and see what can be done.

Again, bless you all, those in this situation and those who seek to help.

So far 20 people are confirmed dead across south east Texas. Over 1 trillion gallons have fallen in Harris County(Houston's main county) alone. There has been so much rain the National Weather Service had to change the colors on their graphs to indicate it.

the red cross is a good place to donate to

This is JJ Watt's fundraiser.

this is for pets impacted by the floods

The rain has stopped in Houston, but there is still a chance for more flooding. Now Beaumont and other eastern towns are getting flooded hard.

Pretty deadly, but seriously, they were told to LEAVE and they knew a strong storm is coming! I did t know, but if I know I was going to have a hurricane I'm out. I'm not thinking about my 4K tv getting stolen, because life is priceless. People who stayed payed the price. Hope the homes & stuff get recovered. Mexico offered to help but so far no answer. I guess trump is mad at them and doesn't care that they could help save lives and give food.

there wasnt a mandatory evacuation. The governor said to evacuate. the mayor said to stay. the reason they told people not to evacuate is because in previous hurricanes so many people tried to leave at once, the traffic got horrible. many people died on the road. I dont know why they couldnt have have had the flood prone areas leave at least.

Inquiry:

Who could make it to a locally sponsored Tanki Tourney?

Bring your laptop, rig, whatever.  Show up with a pro-pass and $25 to $40 bucks, sit down and we play a small tournament, all proceeds go to a relief fund.  DFW area would be the location.

Going to make a survey on the front page with simple "I can" or "I cannot".  Lets see if we can do SOMETHING with Tanki to help others.

While I can see they attempt at being funny, please refrain from that.  Peoples lives have been ruined and we're just trying to find little ways to help, not make a joke of tragedy.

Ah, sad you take it as an attempt at being funny/insult while it was not meant to be one at all. I've seen before-after-pictures and looked at them for quite some time with a feeling of impotence. Those pictures actually touched me, so don't take me the wrong way, will you. I stared at them with disbelief, soooo much water covering big highways, complete houses, cars and trucks. My thoughts were actually with all people and animals in the hurt region while watching the pictures and reading the article.

I was actually quite serious about it as I'd love to join the event.

Watch out on how you interpret peoples posts. Thanks in advance.

Your fun at parties I see

Fair enough, just thinking of what people who might be in this mess reading that would think, but point taken.

And for the record, I am a blast at parties.

How come I never saw this topic before

It got closed by admins some time ago, fell into the ether.  I made it as a place that I hoped players from Texas could talk and maybe organize, a little tourney, talk trash Texas style, etc.  HTown was really good about content and I was posting "Going South" type rock music to keep the place updated, but it tapered off and I guess they thought dead threads look bad.  I asked it be reopened for the purposes of Harvey and maybe making the littlest contribution through this place.  They agreed, and did, and here we are again.

I think we should also find some way to support or at the very least commemorate the people in Mumbai who have also been affected by floods. Over 1200 people have died and the city is basically in ruins.

You should.  Make a page and dedicate it to asking for the well wishes and help of others.
