Subject updated. New subject: A.I. (Artificial Intelligent). Will we be able to make computers smarter then humans? Is it save? What will happen, then? Will they solve the question that every teen-ager asks himself: What are we doing on earth, what are we, what is our goal?

The new subject to debate about has been given. All posts regarding the previous subject will get removed to prevent more arguments with a religious content.

You might want to edit it in the second or the first post weekly as it's easier for players (like me) to find it :)

To launch the conversation, I'll give an idea.

IMO, if we copy paste a human brain into a computer, with all the stuff in it, it will act exactly like the human. What might be dangerous, is to connect that computer to internet, where he might cause damage. What I don't really understand, is how a machine can have the ability to resound by itself…

I did, check the second post :)

Once we reach that point of technology I think the authorities would create certain limitations/rules in order to avoid complications.

I guess so, but as every rule, it might not be respeced by some people, so I think, if AI is dangerous, that the rules of authorities won't really make it more save.

Yeah... Slight problem there.

The human brain isn't a word document.

I didn't say that, but we know how the brain works, how it analizes information, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years we could copy paste a human brain.

What if robots don't want us to control them?

We'll limit the technology so that they cannot ever reach that stage i.e self awareness.

who knows, they might be able to improve themselves. If they are going to have a similar "brain" to humans', everything is possible.

The day that artificial intelligence truly becomes reality could be a very concerning day for mankind. A computer with the equivalent self-awareness/consciousness of a human would easily be able to replicate, and access anything it wanted from the internet. In the eyes of a highly intelligent computer, humans may just be identified as another virus.. and destroyed accordingly. Or perhaps I'm just thinking a bit too much about Terminator/Skynet here.  ;)

Anyhow, if the future brings us technology this advanced, I'm fairly sure we will be prepared with safeguards and appropriate laws regarding the use and application of artificial intelligence in computers.

Like commented, we can't exactly 'copy' and 'paste' the human mind. I suppose we could be advanced enough to where we can introduce similar qualities pertaining to self-awareness or that related to problem solving (metaphorically taken from the prefrontal cortex).

I like the idea of improving themself. I think they would try out things, and then see if it works or not, then they'd keep that information, for the future, untill they tried out every possibility, knowing that a robot can try out thousand possibilities/second. So they'll act like humans: When a human wants to do something: e.g.: hacking a website, he'll just try finding out how to hack it, by trying out many possibilities. The robot does the same, but 10000  x faster, and by doing that, he improves kis knowledges.

Maybe the whole thing started with Bornaparte ?

._.

I don't know why some people think AI or robots would turn against them one day when they fully have self-awareness.. I mean shouldn't they thank the person who made them?

Well, why would they thank the person who made robots who, in their opinion, is gonna turn against them?

what if we're a race of AI created a billion years ago and the waste (failed) ones were sent to this planet and we evolved

I might be a bit high..

Why wouldn't they just get rid of us?

They were probably just using earth as a dump but their ship crashed and killed all the dinosaurs. :o

You think beings intelligent enough to accomplish interstellar travel can simply just crash a ship?

The most important aspect that differs between humans and robots is choice. Choice and free-will is the only wall between a robot, and an alive human. 'life' can be described as free-will, in my opinion. As long as there is no life in robots, they are not threat to us. IMO (this may be something which differs from your opinion) life can simply not be distributed by humans

Well.. actually.. What is life? To be a living being, you must be able to reproduce, robots can duplicate, kinda simmilar, so robots might be considered as living beings.

Another problem is the energy problem. A robot brain similar to a human brain will need more and more energy. A human brain receives and sends up to a billion commands in a second. It's obvious that robots will need enormous energy to do it.
