Simultaneous enemy Firebird & Freeze attacks should cancel out

Recommended Posts

Often in battles there will be a situation where you are attacked both by enemy Freeze and Firebird. In these cases, current Tanki logic has you both freeze (can't move) and burn up while sustaining damage from both. This makes no sense - you can't be frozen and burning at the same time...

A more logical approach would be for the Freeze & Firebird to have some kind of heating/cooling metric applied to an enemy tank based on their firepower and that metric translated into damage & immobility based on how far it is from 0. Obviously, if one is negative, the other one would be positive and if being attacked by both Freeze and Firebird at once, they would more or less cancel out as you would expect.

This would also create an interesting dynamic between Firebird and Freeze in teams where they would actually have to coordinate their attacks.

Actually, that's not the deal.

The first one to shoot gets the Freezing/Burning effect. So if the Freeze shot first, you'd be frozen, but not burning.

But you do sustain damage from both, don't you?

In reality, which the devs usually don't care about, the damage of each should be subtracted from the other by multiplication of the cosine of half the difference in angles of attack, so if you are attacked from the same angle, the lesser attack is canceled out, but if you are attacked from opposite directions, they add up fully.

Nobody is interested in doing this though, so forget it. :P

Yes, but only one gets the effect.

What's the point of not being able to deal damage? Kill-Stealers would be rampant. :(

Ok, so one gets the effect. Nonetheless, that still doesn't make sense.

It's incongruous. It feels wrong. Tanki is an arcade game and obviously none of it has to make too much sense. However, it is still very much based on quite a bit of physics designed to be familiar to people's intuition from real world experience - the physics of the game could be made very much unlike the real world and almost completely unintuitive. In that light, if you have created two devices supposedly acting on the same physical property of an enemy, temperature in this case, their effect should behave in a logical and intuitive way. There is some element of this already in the game where an ally Firebird/Freeze can undo the effects of an enemy's counterpart weapon.

You could say this is a matter of positioning, if Freeze, for example, were designated as a Sci Fi tractor beam gun (and lose its ability to cool down allies, I guess), I wouldn't find a problem with that. But as they are currently both positioned as temperature devices, their behavior makes very little intuitive sense.
